Tyre Shelton rushed for 148 yards, Jaylon Bester ran for a decisive touchdown, and Miami (Ohio) defeated Kent State 23-16 on Saturday. The RedHawks (4-4, 3-1 MAC) led 16-6 heading to the fourth quarter. With 6:30 remaining, Kent State picked up its only touchdown -- a 12-yard run by Craig Elmore. On the fifth play of Miami's ensuing possession, Bester took a handoff, headed toward the right side, then burst virtually untouched into the end zone for a 47-yard touchdown. Kent State (3-5, 2-2) got three points back on a 42-yard field goal by Matthew Trickett at the 1:32 mark but the Golden Flashes' onside kick was unsuccessful. In addition to Shelton's 148 yards on 14 carries, Bester finished with 18 carries for 67 yards. The RedHawks ran 42 times for 289 yards. Kent State's Dustin Crum completed 23 of 44 passes for 209 yards. He was the Golden Flashes' leading rusher with 64 yards on 13 carries. Miami and Ohio are tied for first place in the East Division. Jaylon Bester ran for two touchdowns and Sam Sloman kicked two fourth-quarter field goals that allowed Miami of Ohio to hold off Northern Illinois, 27-24 in a Mid-America Conference battle Saturday afternoon. Marcus Childers nosed in from a yard out to put Northern Illinois up 10-0 with 3:08 left in the second quarter, but the RedHawks answered with a 10-play, 75-yard drive capped by Bester's 1-yard run to make it 10-7 at intermission. Miami (3-4, 2-1) took the second-half kick and marched 90 yards in eight plays and scored on a 45-yard pass from Brett Gabbert to James Maye. Childers and Bester traded third-quarter touchdowns and Miami pushed its lead to 27-17 with just under six minutes to play after Sloman converted from 34- and 37-yards out. Jaylon Bester ran for 107 yards and a touchdown and Miami scored 31 straight points to race past Buffalo 34-20 on Saturday in the Mid-American Conference opener for both teams. Quarterback Brett Gabbert started the comeback with a 1-yard plunge that cut the RedHawks' deficit to 14-10. Bester capped scoring for Miami (2-3) with a 4-yard run that made it 34-14 late in the third quarter. In between, Gabbert had a 13-yard touchdown pass to Jalen Walker and Mike Brown turned his second interception into a 25-yard touchdown return.

Buffalo (2-3) piled up 309 yards on the ground but threw for just 89 yards. Jaret Patterson rushed for 185 yards on 22 carries, including an 82-yard scoring run and Kevin Marks had 101 yards on 17 carries and a touchdown. Patterson's long run made it 14-3 early in the second quarter and Marks scored on a 39-yard run on the first play of the fourth quarter to close the scoring. Brett Gabbert's two short touchdown runs and Bart Baratti's interception return for a score powered a breakaway second quarter as Miami (Ohio) rolled over Tennessee Tech 48-17 on Saturday. The RedHawks (1-1) went into the second quarter with a 10-3 lead and erupted for 31 unanswered points in the period. Gabbert completed 10 of 17 passes for 152 yards and carried the ball twice - each time for a touchdown. Davion Johnson scored twice as Miami scored five rushing touchdowns, piling up 190 yards on the ground. Miami outgained the Golden Eagles (1-1) 349 yards of offense to 282. Miami scored 17 points off three Golden Eagles turnovers.
