SE Louisiana's 54-yard field goal attempt as time expired was no good. Kelley passed for 627 yards and three touchdowns, and added 50 yards on the ground with three TDs for SE Louisiana (7-2, 5-1). Austin Mitchell had 169 yards receiving and a touchdown, and Gage Larvadain added 115 yards and a score.   10/11/21 - DEriq KingrSr/2022, Miami, 5-09, 197 (DS#55 WR) + More +

Miami quarterback D'Eriq King needs surgery to repair his right shoulder and will miss the remainder of the season, a major blow to the reeling Hurricanes and their hopes of contending in the Atlantic Coast Conference. King was injured in the second half of Miami's loss to Michigan State last month, a game that may end up marking the last appearance of his college career. He left the field after getting hurt, then returned and didn't miss a series but was clearly laboring.

The Hurricanes learned the following day that he likely needed surgery, but both they and King were holding out hope that rehabilitation would give him a chance of playing again this season. That hope is now gone, coach Manny Diaz said Monday. “We're now however many weeks out, and I think in D'Eriq's mind we've exhausted that opportunity, that possibility,” Diaz said on his weekly radio show on WQAM-AM. “So, he's going to get the surgery on his shoulder and it's going to be Tyler Van Dyke's team.” King, who was in his sixth college season — taking advantage of a redshirt year at Houston and the NCAA decision to give everyone an extra year of eligibility in response to playing through a pandemic last season — completed 66% of his passes in three games for Miami this season. He entered the year widely touted as one of the nation's top dual-threat quarterbacks, is the most accurate passer in Miami history and has accounted for 111 college touchdowns, 76 of them passing, 32 more rushing and three receiving. No player in college football over the last 20 years has had as many touchdowns in each of those categories. - AP College Football

Cameron Ward threw for 348 yards and three touchdowns, and Incarnate Word held off a late rally to earn its fourth straight win, 38-27 over Northwestern State in a Southland Conference game on Saturday night. Ward tossed a short pass to C.J. Hardy less than a minute into the game, and Marcus Cooper raced 60 yards for a touchdown to make it 14-0 after one quarter. Ward added a 17-yard touchdown pass to Hardy and a 54-yard strike to Kevin Brown that put the Cardinals (4-1, 2-0) up 28-13 at intermission. Ward was 25-of-37 passing but was picked off twice. Brown carried 15 times for 81 yards, and he caught three passes for 59 yards and a touchdown. Cooper carried eight times for 64 yards and two scores. Kaleb Fletcher was 36-of-48 passing for 319 yards and two touchdowns to lead Northwestern State (0-4, 0-1). - AP College Football

Cameron Ward passed for 352 yards with two touchdowns as Incarnate Word scored in every quarter and shut out McNeese 31-0 Saturday to open Southland Conference play. The Cardinals (3-1) had closed their nonconference slate last week with a historic 42-35 defeat of Texas State, UIW's first win against an FBS program. Incarnate Word took the opening kickoff 75 yards in 12 plays to lead 7-0 when Kevin Brown ran the final 14 yards to score. Ward completed a 5-yard pass to Darion Chafion to convert a fourth-and-2 near midfield to keep the drive going.

Ce'Cori Tolds recovered a fumble on the ensuing kickoff and the Cardinals scored a second touchdown four plays later on a Cameron Grimes run from the 1. Late in the game UIW's Rashon Davis intercepted McNeese's Cody Ogeron to end a Cowboys threat. Incarnate Word converted the turnover into a short field goal. Ogeron was 22-for-36 passing for 215 yards. McNeese was held to 75 yards rushing on 27 carries. Mason Pierce, who became the first Cowboy football player in the 78-year history of the program to take the game's opening kickoff for a touchdown when he sprinted 100-yards a week ago, was held to 30 yards on two kickoff returns Saturday. - AP College Football

Cameron Ward threw for 376 yards and four touchdowns and Incarnate Word beat Texas State 42-34 on Saturday. In a game featuring seven lead changes, Ward threw an 8-yard touchdown pass to Darion Chafin with 7:07 left to play for a 35-31 lead and Incarnate Word led the rest of the way. The Cardinals (2-1) used a seven-play, 30-yard drive that lasted 2:19. Incarnate Word's defense set the table for a short field recovering a Texas State fumble on the Bobcats' (1-2) prior drive. Robert Ferrel amassed 132 receiving yards on 10 receptions with two touchdowns, and Taylor Grimes caught 11 passes for 113 yards and a score for Incarnate Word.   09/17/21 - Jaylin AldermanrSr/2026, Miami, 6-1, 230 (DS#999 ILB) + More +

Jaylin Alderman returned an interception off a tipped pass for a 66-yard touchdown with 13 seconds remaining, giving Louisville a thrilling 42-35 victory over UCF on Friday night. The Knights and their high-speed offense appeared primed to win the back-and-forth battle after intercepting Louisville's Malik Cunningham off a deflection on the previous play for possession at the Cardinals 41 with under a minute to play.

But Alderman, a freshman linebacker, was there to snatch a tip of Dillon Gabriel's pass on the next snap before finding room down the right sideline for the TD to spark a delirious celebration for Louisville. "He's just an instinctive player," linebacker C.J. Avery said of Alderman, who was not available for postgame interviews. "Right before that play, I knew he was going into the game and I just told him, ‘just do your job and you'll make a play.' And he did." UCF (2-1) attempted several laterals on the game's final play before being penalized for an illegal forward pass that closed the victory for Louisville (2-1). Cunningham ran for two touchdowns and threw for another TD in helping Louisville. He was 23-of-38 passing 265 yards and rushed 13 times for 99 yards. The victory was huge for a Cardinals team playing their third game in 12 days and in a second consecutive short week. They trailed twice early but rallied both times and then led twice more before getting the final word on defense. - Louisville/AP College Football

Cameron Ward completed 21 of 38 passes for 208 yards and three touchdowns and Incarnate Word took control early on its way to a 40-9 victory over Prairie View A&M in nonconference play on Saturday. Ward hooked up with CJ Hardy for a 16-yard score and a 7-0 lead just 4 minutes into the game. John Scifers added a 49-yard field goal and Marcus Cooper scored on a 16-yard run to put the Cardinals up 17-0 by quarter's end. Kevin Brown scored on an 8-yard run and Ward hit Roger McCuller for a 9-yard TD and a 30-0 halftime lead. Ward connected with Taylor Grimes for an 8-yard TD in the third quarter and Scifers kicked a 45-yard field goal in the fourth to cap Incarnate Word's scoring.   09/11/21 - CamRon HarrisSr/2022, Miami, 5-09, 214 (DS#33 RB) + More +

A cat survived a scare. So did the Miami Hurricanes. D'Eriq King threw for 200 yards and rushed for 67 more, freshman Andy Borregales kicked a go-ahead 43-yard field goal with 2:04 remaining and No. 22 Miami rallied from a halftime deficit to beat Appalachian State 25-23 on Saturday night. Cam'Ron Harris rushed for 91 yards and a touchdown for Miami (1-1), and Don Chaney Jr. had a rushing score before leaving in the first half with a leg injury.

King led a 10-play, 55-yard drive in the fourth that set up Borregales for what became the winning points. "Obviously, we're going to be happy," Harris said. "I'm not satisfied with the win, but that was a great team that we played." And the Mountaineers - who still get talked about for their stunning win at Michigan in 2007 - put a big scare into Miami. "App State is a really good football team," Miami coach Manny Diaz said. "They made it tough on us. We made it tough on ourselves. ... This is what they do. They go on the road and they take down people on the road. But they didn't take us down." Jalen Virgil had a 100-yard kickoff return for a touchdown and Camerun Peoples had 95 rushing yards and a score for the Mountaineers (1-1), who took a 23-22 lead with 5:48 left when Malik Williams caught a 3-yard touchdown pass from Chase Brice. But Appalachian State's last chance stalled near midfield, and Miami got the ball back with 55 seconds left and ran out the clock. "Our players took them down to the wire," Appalachian State coach Shawn Clark said. "It's a gut-wrenching loss." Brice completed 21 of 34 passes for 199 yards with a touchdown and an interception. - Miami/AP College Football

  08/27/21 - DJ Scaife Jr.rSr/2023, Miami, 6-4, 321 (DS#21 OG) + More +

The Miami Herald learned this week that Miami-Dade prosecutors have declined to press charges against UM offensive lineman Delone (DJ) Scaife, 21, who was arrested in early July for carrying a concealed firearm. UM declined comment when asked if Scaife or tight end Larry Hodges, who was arrested in March for carrying a concealed firearm and possession of 20 grams or less of marijuana, would be suspended for any games this season. A Miami-Dade County prosecutor decided not to pursue charges against Hodges. A UM source said UM was aware of the Scaife arrest. - Miami Herald

  08/23/21 - Cam McCormickrSr/2025, Miami, 6-5, 248 (DS#58 TE) + More +

Cam McCormick's football career the last three years has been a revolving door of surgeries, setbacks, more surgeries and more setbacks. But with less than three weeks until Oregon opens its season at home against Fresno State, the sixth-year senior tight end from Bend is on track to play for the first time since he was the opening-game starter in 2018. When that happens, "I might shed a tear, I don't know," fellow tight end Spencer Webb said recently. "I know what he's been through. I know what his family's been through with that situation. I'm going to be freaking the loudest one on the sideline going crazy. I'll probably run on the field and get a penalty. I'm excited for him and can't wait for that moment." It's been a wild ride for the 6-5, 259-pound McCormick, whose athleticism and pass-catching skills moved him to the top of the depth chart as a redshirt sophomore.

However, late in the first quarter against Bowling Green at Autzen Stadium on Sept. 1, 2018, McCormick caught a pass from Justin Herbert and was tackled for a 2-yard loss that sent him into a three-year tailspin. McCormick broke his fibula and tore the deltoid ligament in his ankle on that play, sidelining him for what he assumed would be just the rest of the season. It became a considerably longer recovery. - Register Guard

  08/22/21 - Bubba BoldenSr/2022, Miami, 6-2, 209 (DS#16 SS) + More +

A longtime NFL scout with front-office experience, who is respected in the industry, told me recently that among UM players who could turn pro next spring, the only two whose tape and NFL measurables would warrant a selection in the first half of the draft, in his view, are left tackle Zion Nelson (if he continues to improve) and safety Bubba Bolden. But the scout said he has some doubts about Bolden, believing he has been "overhyped" and expressing concern about the unevenness in his play in 2020. (To his credit, Bolden has acknowledged the need to improve as one reason he returned for 2021.) That scout saw Bolden as a player with the potential to rise to late in the second day of the draft if he performs more consistently this year. For now, he called Bolden a mid third-day pick (fifth-round range). - Miami Herald

  08/20/21 - Carson BeckrSr/2026, Miami, 6-5, 233 (DS#4 QB) + More +

JT Daniels locked down UGA football's starting quarterback job with the way he sparked the offense in his four games to end last season. So the question at the position now isn't about the No. 1 spot. It's about which guy is in position to be the backup for the fifth-ranked Bulldogs heading into the Sept. 4 opener against No. 2 Clemson in Charlotte. Redshirt freshman Carson Beck has the inside track for the job based on his showing this spring including the G-Day spring game.

Second-year offensive coordinator Todd Monken left some wiggle room when asked Thursday about the No. 2 QB. "Well, we're working through that right now," he said. "We left spring with Carson as our No. 2 quarterback, but we're working through that now." Beck, the 6-foot-4, 215-pounder from Jacksonville, completed 22 of 31 passes for 236 yards with two touchdowns and an interception in the spring game when he worked as the No. 2 quarterback. "I'm excited about Carson Beck's future," coach Kirby Smart said at SEC Media Days in July. "He's a very bright young man. He's done the right things off the field in terms of classroom and doing what he's supposed to do. He's improved in that area. He's talented. He's really got good composure. He's a guy that can stand in the pocket with confidence and make throws." - Athens Banner-Herald
