  In a game that featured five lead changes and more than 1,000 yards of offense, Mercer's Fred Davis stole the show with school records of 276 yards rushing and five touchdowns as the Bears defeated Samford 45-42 on Saturday night. Four of Davis's touchdowns came in the second half, two in the third quarter and two in the fourth. The fourth-quarter scores proved pivotal, first giving Mercer a 38-35 lead, then later putting the Bears up 45-35.

A two-yard touchdown run by Samford quarterback Liam Welch cut the Bulldogs' deficit to 45-42 before Mercer's Coby Neenan recovered the onside-kick and the Bears ran out the final 1:22. Mercer's Fred Payton completed 13 of 23 passes for 161 yards. The Bears (3-1, 2-0 Southern Conference) finished with 350 rushing yards and 213 passing for a total of 563 yards. For Samford (2-3, 1-2), Welch completed 31 of 46 passes for 312 yards and four touchdowns, He was intercepted twice. Jay Stanton had 101 yards rushing on 22 carries.   Brandon Marshall ran for a pair of scores and Fred Payton threw for another and Mercer controlled Furman 24-3 in a Southern Conference opener on Saturday. Payton threw a 35-yard touchdown to Ty James to complete a nine-play, 75-yard drive that put Mercer (2-1, 1-0) ahead 7-3. Marshall added touchdown runs of 10 and 1 yards in the second quarter for an 18-point lead. Fred Davis added 94 yards on the ground with 18 carries for Mercer. The Bears' defense stymied Furman (2-2, 0-1) quarterbacks Hamp Sisson who threw three interceptions and backup Jace Wilson who threw a pick. - AP College Football

  South Alabama offensive lineman Nate Howard has left the team and entered the NCAA transfer portal, he confirmed to AL.com on Friday. Howard, a 6-foot-7, 325-pound freshman from Forsythe, Ga., did not see action for the Jaguars in 2020. He entered spring practice running with the first team at right tackle, but had lost playing time to Louisiana Tech transfer Antawn Lewis by the end of camp. A member of South Alabama's 2020 signing class, Howard is the fifth South Alabama scholarship player to leave the team since January. Of the other four, offensive lineman Hayden Burton was dismissed for violation of team rules, while running back Carlos Davis and safety Dewayne Betts were suspended indefinitely following offseason arrests. - Birmingham News

  MARCH 1 BIG SOUTH SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Gardner-Webb return specialist Devron Harper returned three kickoffs for 84 yards (28.0 average) and four punts for 40 yards (10.0) - including a 41-yard punt return touchdown at the end of the third quarter that extended GWU's lead to 28-20. He returned one kickoff 42 yards to set-up the Runnin' Bulldogs near midfield, and had a 37-yard kickoff return to give GWU the ball at its own 38-yard line.   Backup quarterback Fred Payton three three touchdown passes and No. 25 Coastal Carolina won its first game as a ranked team with a 28-14 victory over Georgia Southern on Saturday. The Chanticleers (5-0, 3-0 Sun Belt Conference) played without starting passer Grayson McCall, who had an upper body injury. But Payton threw of a 24-yard TD pass to running back C.J. Marable with 8:53 remaining to break a 14-all tie and Coastal Carolina up for good. Reese White added a 20-yard scoring run to extend the Chants' margin - and likely guarantee another week in the Top 25. Payton, who started 10 games over the past two seasons, finished 15 of 28 for 252 yards. Coastal outgained Georgia Southern 382-218 and held the Eagles to 2-of-12 on third down with two interceptions by cornerback D'Jordan Strong, six tackles for loss and four sacks, including two by linebacker Enock Makonzo. A turnover on downs by Georgia Southern and late interception by Strong sealed the win.
