  Braden Atkinson threw for 347 yards with three touchdown passes, Julian Fox recovered two fumbles, and Mercer defeated Princeton 38-14 on Saturday. Two of Mercer’s first four touchdown drives were for less than 50 yards as the Bears cashed in on Fox’s fumble recoveries. Mercer led 21-7 at halftime and Atkinson’s third touchdown pass made it 28-7 in the third quarter. Adjatay Dabbs had a 10-yard touchdown run to make it 35-7 heading to the fourth quarter.

Atkinson completed 27 of 42 passes. He threw one interception. His leading receivers were Dabbs and Adonis McDaniel, each with three catches for 78 yards. Princeton got two touchdown passes from Kai Colon, who was 13-for-21 passing for 124 yards. Mercer (5-1) outgained Princeton (2-2) in total yards, 503-257. - AP College Football

  WEEK 5 SOCON OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: CJ Miller, R-Jr., RB, Mercer, Gadsden, Ala., Miller rushed for 172 yards on 29 carries, scoring a pair of rushing touchdowns in Mercer's 38-34 comeback win over ETSU on Saturday. Both of the redshirt junior's scores came from 1-yard out, including the go-ahead touchdown with 5:40 left in the contest. The native of Gadsden, Alabama, also caught four passes for 41 yards in the game. Miller's 172 rushing yards were the highest output by any SoCon player on the ground this season. Miller was also named the Stats Perform FCS National Offensive Player of the Week for his performance against the Bucs.   WEEK 5 SOCON SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Reice Griffith, Jr., PK, Mercer, Pace, Fla.,...Griffith, who won the honor for the second consecutive week, went 6-for-6 on kick attempts, including a 49-yard field goal in the opening quarter of Mercer's win. The junior from Pace, Florida, went 5-for-5 on extra-point kicks and logged four touchbacks on seven kickoffs. Griffith is a perfect 4-fot-4 on field goals over 40 yards this season. He established career highs for carries (29), rushing yards (172) and rushing touchdowns (two), while adding three receptions for 41 yards for another career best with 213 scrimmage yards. He plowed into the ETSU from 1 yard out with 5:40 left for the game-winning score.   CJ Miller rushed for 172 yards and two touchdowns, Braden Atkinson threw three touchdown passes, and Mercer overcame a 10-point fourth-quarter deficit to beat East Tennessee State 38-34 on Saturday night. Mercer (3-1, 3-0 Southern Conference), No. 23 in the FCS coaches poll, led on a field goal with 10:09 in the first quarter, but didn't reclaim the lead again until the 5:40 mark in the fourth quarter. After Atkinson's lone interception in the third quarter, Cade McNamara returned the favor with one of his own.

Atkinson capitalized with his third touchdown pass, connecting with Brayden Smith to cut the deficit to 34-31 with 11:29 remaining. Miller punched in a 1-yard run for a touchdown to reclaim the lead. Mercer's Andrew Zock sacked McNamara to stall the ensuing drive. While the Buccaneers forced a stop to get the ball back with 2:03 remaining, McNamara threw a second interception on the final drive. Hakeem Meggett, who caught three touchdown passes and had 119 receiving yards, slipped on his route, allowing Kaleb Hutchinson to ice the game with the turnover. McNamara was 29-of-46 passing for 398 yards and four touchdowns for ETSU (2-3, 0-1). It's the first time since 2020 that McNamara has thrown four touchdowns in a game.   Freshman Braden Atkinson threw four touchdown passes in his second career start and Mercer routed The Citadel 38-0 on Saturday. Atkinson completed 28 of 34 passes for 304 yards without an interception. A week ago in his first collegiate start, he threw for 311 yards in a come-from-behind win against Wofford. Against The Citadel, Atkinson had a 49-yard completion to Kendall Harris and an 18-yard touchdown pass to Adjatay Dabbs as the Bears opened the scoring with a three-play, 71-yard drive on their first possession. Atkinson added touchdown passes of 29 yards to Dabbs, 12 yards to Adonis McDaniel and 8 yards to Harris. CJ Miller had a 79-yard touchdown run for the Bears (3-1, 2-0 Southern Conference), ranked No. 25 in the FCS coaches poll. Miller gained 100 yards on seven carries. Dabbs had 100 yards receiving on six receptions, two of them touchdowns. The Bulldogs (1-3, 1-1) were held to 10 first downs and were outgained 456-194 in total yards. - AP College Football

  Braden Atkinson passed for 316 yards and connected with CJ Miller for the go-ahead touchdown in the fourth quarter as Mercer survived an upset bid from Wofford with a 22-21 victory in a Southern Conference opener Saturday night. Atkinson completed 26 of 37 passes with two interceptions for the Bears (1-1) - ranked 22nd in the FCS coaches poll. Miller also rushed for 74 yards on 16 carries and his 3-yard touchdown run gave Mercer a 10-0 lead after one quarter.

Ethan Drumm fired an 80-yard scoring strike to Ivory Aikens to get the Terriers (0-3) on the scoreboard, but Reice Griffith kicked his second field goal - a 40-yarder - as time expired for a 13-7 lead at the half. Drumm hit Isaiah Scott for a 51-yard touchdown and then tossed a 7-yard score to C.J. Adams on back-to-back third-quarter drives to put Wofford on top 21-13. Griffith kicked a 44-yard field goal to cut it to 21-16 midway through the third quarter and Atkinson's go-ahead score came 57 seconds into the fourth.   D.J. Smith accounted for four touchdowns and threw for 320 yards and Mercer took charge early in a 63-10 win over Presbyterian in the season opener for both teams on Thursday night. Dwayne Mcgee ran it from the 3 on Mercer's first drive for a 7-0 lead. Following a Blue Hose field goal, Smith helped lead an eight-play, 62-yard drive that ended with his 13-yard scoring pass to Kelin Parsons and a 14-3 lead. Smith - who threw three touchdowns and ran for one - plunged in from the 1 for a 21-3 lead midway through the second quarter.

The Bears scored two touchdowns in each of the first three quarters and posted three TDs in the fourth. Smith threw a 68-yard touchdown to Brayden Smith and connected on a 9-yarder with Tyrell Coard for a 42-3 advantage. Smith's lone punt return was a 75-yard touchdown and the game's final score with 1:39 remaining. Mercer collected 500 yards on offense and went 8 for 11 on third down conversions. Presbyterian scored its touchdown when Ty Englehart threw a 24-yard pass to Cincere Gill to reduce the deficit to 42-10 before the end of the third. The redshirt sophomore from Conyers, Georgia, had a career-high 13 catches for a school-record 351 yards, the most in an NCAA game this season and surpassing his own program standard of 224 set last season. James also erased a SoCon record that had stood since 2004, shattering the previous mark of 280 yards. James, who added 13 yards on one carry, also set a program record with 364 all-purpose yards on the afternoon, good for fourth in a game in SoCon history, while his two touchdown catches pushed his season total to 13, yet another program record and tied for eighth in a season in SoCon history.
