  Cody Orgeron passed for 303 yards, two touchdowns and an interception and ran for 80 yards and a score to help McNeese beat Houston Baptist 42-27 on Saturday. Houston Baptist cut the deficit to within one touchdown at 14-7, 21-14 and 28-20, but the Cowboys scored back-to-back touchdowns to push the lead to 42-20 with 2:56 left in the game. Elijah Mack gave the Cowboys (4-4, 2/3 Southland Conference) the lead for good with a 1-yard TD run that capped the opening drive of the game. After the Huskies (4-4, 1-3) had a three-and-out on their first possession, Trevor Begue scored on a 31-yard TD pass from Orgeron to make it 14-0. Begue had nine catches for 121 yards and a touchdown. Cyron Sutton added six catches for 116 yards and a score. Bailey Zappe passed for 317 yards, four touchdowns and an interception for the Huskies. - AP College Football

  Cody Orgeron threw three touchdowns and his 33-yard score to Trevor Begue with 2:21 left gave McNeese a 38-34 win over Southeastern Louisiana on Saturday. McNeese (3-3, 1-2 Southland) built a 24-3 lead with 5½ minutes to play before halftime. The Lions rallied before intermission when Chason Virgil threw a 10-yard TD pass to C.J. Turner. Southern Louisiana (3-3, 2-1) forced a three-and-out and scored again when backup quarterback Cole Kelley threw a 31-yard score to Lorenzo Nunez to reduce the deficit to 24-17. The Lions cut it to 24-20 with a field goal before they took their first lead when Virgil threw a 60-yard scoring pass to Nunez early in the fourth quarter.

McNeese regained the lead when Elijah Mack plunged in from a yard out about three minutes later. The Lions grabbed their last lead when Kelley threw a 2-yard TD to Bransen Schwebel with 7:06 left. Mack ran for 142 yards on 28 carries and scored twice. Virgil finished with 321 yards passing and Kelley threw for two scores for the Lions. - AP College Football

  SEPT 2/WEEK 1 SOUTHLAND SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Bailey Raborn, Jr., Punter, McNeese, Lafayette, La.,...In his debut as the Pokes' primary punter, Raborn booted six punts for an average of 45.5 yards, good for 10th-best among FCS punters. Three of his kicks resulted in muffed punts with a pair of them recovered by McNeese. Raborn pinned the Jaguars inside the 20-yard line on two punts and inside the 25-yard line on four kicks. His longest went for 56 yards and he booted another for 54 yards. Honorable Mention: Austin Dunlap, Southeastern Louisiana; Hayden Ray, Central Arkansas. - Southland Conference Football

  Cody Orgeron threw two scores and McNeese held off a late Southern comeback to beat the Jaguars 34-28 on Saturday night in the season opener for both teams. Elijah Mack's 3-yard touchdown run put McNeese up 34-14 with 5:25 left to play. Southern responded with a 4-play, 75-yard drive to make it 34-21. McNeese recovered the on-side kick, and the Jaguars defense forced a three-and-out. Bailey Raborn's 37-yard punt went out of bounds at the Southern 1-yard line with 2:36 left.

Undeterred, Southern put together a 10-play, 99-yard scoring drive in just under two minutes that ended when Glendon McDaniel plunged in from a yard out. Southern's pooch-kick attempt went out of bounds and the Cowboys escaped with the win. Orgeron threw for 147 yards in the win. McDaniel threw for 135 yards and a touchdown and Ladarius Skelton came on in relief and threw two scores. - AP College Football

  2019 PRESEASON ALL-SOUTHLAND CONFERENCE FIRST TEAM (COACHES): DL Chris Livings, McNeese, Sr., Lake Charles, La.,...Livings will be entering the 2019 season within striking range of the school's career quarterback sacks record. The Lake Charles native has recorded 20.5 sacks in his career, ranking him fourth on the all-time list and is 10.5 away from Bryan Smith's record of 31. In addition, Livings has accumulated 31 career tackles for a loss and needs just a half TFL to move into the all-time top 10. Last season, Livings tied a single-game school record with five QB sacks in a win over Abilene Christian and ended the season with eight takedowns on the year, matching his single-season career best from 2016. - McNeese Football
