Cody Orgeron threw a pair of late fourth-quarter touchdown passes and broke loose for a 19-yard touchdown run in the second overtime, leading McNeese to a 40-37 victory over Tarleton State on Saturday night to kick off the Football Championship Subdivision spring season. Frank Wilson, the first African-American head coach at McNeese, made his Cowboys' debut while the Texans played their first game as a Division I member. A New Orleans native, Wilson was named the Cowboys’ 17th head coach on Jan. 16, 2020 after spending the previous four seasons as head coach at UTSA.

Tarleton State moved to D-I and the Western Athletic Conference in July. The Texans will compete as an independent program since the WAC dropped football in 2012.   Two Ragin' Cajuns have entered the NCAA transfer portal since the season started - and UL coach Billy Napier is OK with that. One, reserve quarterback Clifton McDowell, remains on the No. 17 Cajuns' roster. The other, reserve receiver Brian Smith Jr., does not. McDowell entered the portal, according to 247Sports.com, on Sept. 14, two days after UL's season-opening upset win at Iowa State. He did so after emerging from preseason camp as UL's No. 4 quarterback behind returning starter Levi Lewis; fellow scholarship redshirt freshman Chandler Fields, who's spent most of this season listed on the depth chart as the Cajuns' No. 2; and Jaiave Magalei, a juco transfer who was the backup last season. McDowell continues to work with the UL's scout team even while seeking a new home. "Cliff's done a good job for us," Napier said of McDowell, who also took reps with receivers during camp. - Daily Advertiser

Former LSU tight end Jamal Pettigrew has signed with McNeese State, the school announced Saturday afternoon. LSU coach Ed Orgeron said Pettigrew, who entered the NCAA transfer portal last week, was seeking more playing time for his final collegiate season. Pettigrew graduated from LSU this summer and is eligible to play immediately. The 6-foot-7, 254-pound St. Augustine High graduate has recorded two catches for 17 yards in his LSU career. Pettigrew joins a McNeese State program with several LSU ties. McNeese coach Frank Wilson is entering his first season, and he was LSU's associate head coach, running backs coach and recruiting coordinator from 2010 to 2015. Orgeron's son, Cody, is also the team's projected starting quarterback. Orgeron said in a Tuesday morning interview with WNXX-FM, 104.5's "Off the Bench" that the door was open for Pettigrew to return. "I told him, 'Go test the waters. If there's something that fits you, go," Orgeron said. "If not, come back." "It's his senior year," he added. "He wants to play." - Baton Rouge Advocate
