2022 PRESEASON MANNING AWARD PRESEASON WATCH LIST: Taulia Tagovailoa, Jr., Maryland,...Tagovailoa elevated Maryland's passing game to heights it has never seen before during the 2021 season. The Ewa Beach, Hawaii native completed 328 of 474 passes for 3,860 yards and 26 touchdowns while setting seven single-season program records. He shattered the single-season school records for passing yards and completions while equaling the mark for touchdowns thrown.

Tagovailoa became the first quarterback to start every game of a season for Maryland since C.J. Brown did so in 2014. He closed his sensational season by completing 20 of 24 passes for 265 yards and two touchdowns to lead Maryland to a 54-10 rout of Virginia Tech in the New Era Pinstripe Bowl. Tagovailoa was named Most Valuable Player of the game after directing an offense that compiled 481 total yards and scored the most points in the history of the Pinstripe Bowl. - Maryland Football

The Terps lost a pair of standout wide receivers, Dontay Demus Jr. and Jeshaun Jones, to major knee injuries last season. Demus led the Big Ten in receiving yards before he tore his ACL in the fifth game. Both participated in the first official practice of the preseason. Demus decided to put his NFL dreams on hold to return to Maryland, and even after dealing with a bone bruise in his foot in addition to the knee injury, he was surprised by the speed of his recovery. "I'm pretty much doing everything except for a little less contact," said Demus, a senior. "I feel like everything's pretty 100 percent, to be honest."

Jones, in his fifth season as a Terp, tore his other ACL in 2019 and said his most recent recovery process was "a lot smoother than my first time." Jones and Demus join junior star Rakim Jarrett (829 receiving yards last season) and Florida transfer Jacob Copeland (642 yards in 2021) to form a formidable unit. "I think it could be scary with all the weapons we have outside, with Lia in the pocket, the line up front, the backs we've got," Jones said. "I think the pass game could really open up for us." - Washington Post

Chad Ryland will take over kicking duties for the Terps, filling the position previously held by Joseph Petrino for four seasons. Ryland, a four-year starter at Eastern Michigan, transferred to Maryland after setting the Eagles' single-season record for points (104) in 2021. He kicked a career-long 55-yard field goal late in the season and soon after made the jump to a Power Five program, using an extra season of eligibility granted to athletes because of the coronavirus pandemic. "Deep down, every kid's dream is to go as big as possible and make kicks on the biggest stage, which I'm obviously going to have a chance to do this year walking into Penn State, Michigan, Wisconsin," Ryland said. "I'm fired up about that, and that's something that contributed to my choice to come here." - Washington Post

2022 PRESEASON PAUL HORNUNG AWARD WATCH LIST: Tarheeb Still, Maryland,...Still enters his junior season as a Terp as a versatile player that plays every snap at cornerback, serves as the team's punt returner, and is on the field goal unit to block kicks. The Sicklerville, NJ native has started all 17 games he has played in over two seasons and has totaled 75 tackles (58 solo), 19 pass breakups, three tackles for loss and two sacks.

Still led the nation in pass breakups per game in 2020 en route to being named a Freshman All-American by The Athletic. Last season, Still stood Second on the team and sixth in the Big Ten with 11 pass breakups. As a punt returner, Still broke the school record for longest punt return in program history in last year's New Era Pinstripe Bowl, opening the scoring with a 92-yard touchdown to the house. In total, Still returned 21 punts for 172 yards. The cornerback was one of only 52 players in the FBS to return a punt for a touchdown last season. - Maryland Football

Mike Locksley believes the Terps' offensive line, which is returning all five starters, is the most improved unit on the team. He said redshirt senior tackle Jaelyn Duncan, a potential first-round pick in next year's NFL draft, has elite athleticism. "He's a [320]-pound guy that moves like he's 220 pounds," Locksley said of the former St. Frances star. "I would venture to say there are very few tackles throughout the country that have the type of athleticism he has with change of direction, balance and body control." - Baltimore Sun

Mike Locksley said senior wide receiver Dontay Demus Jr. is "ahead of schedule" in his recovery from a knee injury he suffered last season and expects him to play in the season opener against Buffalo on Sept. 3, barring any setbacks. "[I'm] really impressed with how he's returned," Locksley said. "Our training staff, led by Brian Simerville, has done a tremendous job of getting Dontay back. I think last week he broke 21 or 22 [mph] on the Catapult [fitness tracker], which means he's got that explosiveness back." Demus, who was considered a potential mid-to-late-round draft pick last season, caught 28 passes for 507 yards and three touchdowns in five games before injuring his knee during a kick return in Maryland's loss to Iowa in October. Demus' return will be huge for the Terps, who are poised to have one of the best passing units in the conference. Demus, a three-time All-Big Ten honorable mention, is second in program history in career 100-yard games (seven), sixth in career touchdowns (13), eighth in career yards (1,775) and 12th in career receptions (106). - Baltimore Sun

Tagovailoa had one of the best seasons by a quarterback in Maryland history in 2021. He set the single-season record in passing yards (3,860) and completions (328) while tying former quarterback Scott Milanovich for the most passing touchdowns (26). But more importantly, Tagovailoa, the brother of former Alabama star and Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, provided much-needed stability at the position, becoming the first quarterback since C.J. Brown in 2014 to start every game.

But the Alabama transfer wasn't flawless last season. His decision-making was an issue at times, as he often threw the ball into tight coverage. In the Terps' 51-14 home loss to then-No. 5 Iowa, he threw five of his 11 interceptions. The spring game will be nowhere close to the competition level Tagovailoa will face during the regular season. However, it will be interesting to see if the third-year starter shows improvement as a decision-maker while strengthening his connections with the receivers. If Maryland wants to build off its first winning season in seven years, the Terps will need Tagovailoa to continue to make strides as a signal-caller. - Baltimore Sun
