Freshman Montrell Johnson rushed for four short touchdowns, the first of his collegiate career, Levi Lewis passed for 212 yards and Louisiana-Lafayette fended off Ohio 49-14 Thursday night. Johnson scored on runs of 6, 1, 1 and 1 yards with 13 carries for 84 yards gained. Previously this season he had games of 27 and 11 yards. The Ragin' Cajuns (2-1) engineered scoring drives of 91 and 80 yards to start the game, building a 14-0 lead by early in the second quarter. Lewis finished 21-of-29 passing. Thirteen receivers caught passes. Ohio scored on a trick play when starting quarterback Kurtis Rourke, lined up as a wideout to the right, backpedaled to catch a quick toss from Armani Rogers and, curling away from an onrushing defender, fired a 25-yard rope down the sideline to O'Shaan Allison in the end zone.

Louisiana-Lafayette answered with Johnson's run from the 1 as time expired in the first half. He pushed over again on the opening drive of the second half, scoring on fourth-and-1 from the 1. The back-to-back touchdowns swung momentum to Louisiana-Lafayette. Cameron Odom, who passed 1,000 yards receiving last Saturday for Ohio (0-3), was held to two catches for six yards Thursday. Allison, who surpassed 1,000 yards career rushing on Saturday gained 48 on the ground against Louisiana-Lafayette and another 44 through the air. Rourke was 12-for-22 passing for 122 yards and a pair of touchdowns for the Bobcats. - Louisiana/AP College Football

Levi Lewis threw for 304 yards and two touchdowns and Louisiana-Lafayette edged Nicholls 27-24 on Saturday night. Leading 17-10 at halftime, the Ragin' Cajuns' Kris Moncrief returned an interception 67 yards for a touchdown in the third quarter and Kenneth Almendares added a 28-yard field goal in the fourth. The Colonels (0-2) rallied with a pair of touchdowns in the final five minutes, but the second came with only 33 seconds remaining and Nicholls failed to recover an onside kick. Lewis was 19-of-33 passing with completions to 11 ULL (1-1) receivers. Michael Jefferson led with 84 yards and a touchdown. John Stephens also caught a scoring pass. Lindsey Scott was 26 of 37 for 359 yards passing with three touchdowns and the pick-6. Scott added 121 yards rushing on 18 carries. Dai-Jean Dixon made a school-record 14 catches and tied another school mark with 198 yards receiving while going over 3,000 career yards. He caught two TD passes. - AP College Football

UL will open the 2021 season nationally ranked in both of college football's major polls. The Ragin' Cajuns are 23rd in the Associated Press preseason Top 25, which was released Monday. The Cajuns also are No. 23 in the 2021 preseason USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll, released last week. This marks the first time in program history UL has opened a season nationally ranked in either poll, according to a team spokesman. "It's pretty insignificant relative to what happens this season," coach Billy Napier said. "We're gonna have 12 opportunities in the regular season to prove ourselves one week at a time. Going into this season where we are, that's all kind of...based on the past. "I do think it's humbling. I certainly think it basically says that people respect what you're doing, what you've done in the past and maybe what you're capable of in the future," Napier added. "But it is just that: It's potential, and we're not about potential here. We're about performance." - Daily Advertiser

Napier said UL has added East Carolina transfer Robert Hill, a long snapper expected to compete for the starting job. Hill played nine games for East Carolina last season and nine for Nevada in 2019. He was on Georgia's roster in 2018 and played 12 games for Tulsa in 2016. Napier said Paul Boudreaux, UL's snapper last season, decided to begin graduate school. Hill will compete against contenders including James Segrest, a St. Thomas More High product whose father is Cajuns defensive line coach Rory Segrest. - Daily Advertiser

UL football is a runaway favorite to win the Sun Belt Conference's West Division, according to the league's 2021 preseason coaches poll. Nine of 10 Sun Belt coaches picked the Ragin' Cajuns to win the West, with the other unidentified coach choosing Arkansas State. UL received 49 voting points. Arkansas State was picked second with 38, followed by South Alabama, Texas State and UL Monroe. Coastal Carolina and Appalachian State tied for first in Sun Belt East voting with 44 points each, but Coastal received six first-place votes and second-place App State four. Georgia State was picked third in the East, followed by Georgia Southern and Troy. UL and Coastal Carolina were to have met in last season's Sun Belt championship game, but it was canceled because of COVID-19 issues within the Chanticleers program. - Daily Advertiser

Although loaded with returnees at the position already, UL has added another experienced receiver to the arsenal for quarterback Levi Lewis. The Ragin' Cajuns have made Alabama State transfer Michael Jefferson a late member of their 2021 signing class, coach Billy Napier said Wednesday. Jefferson - a product of Murphy High in Mobile, Alabama - reported this week along with other players for the start of summer of workouts. All players reported as expected, according to Napier. Jefferson played three seasons at Alabama State, an FCS program in the SWAC. "He's got a lot of height and length," Napier said. "He's been very productive. He's not only a good receiver, but a good special teams player." Jefferson had a team-leading 24 catches 234 yards and two touchdowns in five games when the Hornets played an abbreviated schedule in the spring of 2021 because of COVID-19. - Daily Advertiser

Unlike other Ragin' Cajun running backs competing for carries this spring, Jacob Kibodi is an enigma of sorts. Chris Smith was the third member of UL's 2020 three-man rotation. T.J. Wisham, who played primarily on special teams before breaking his wrist last season, got 15 carries in 2019. Emani Bailey got 10 as a freshman last year and walk-on Michael Orphey Jr. has had a few the past two seasons. They're known commodities. But not a lot is known about the 6-foot-2, 220-pound Kibodi, a transfer who spent three seasons at Texas A&M but hasn't played since 2019. "He can bring speed and the power," Smith said. "I would say you can compare him to an Eli (Mitchell)," quarterback Levi Lewis added. "He can run it, and he can come out of the backfield and catch the ball. He's a great route runner." Kibodi is expected to contend with Bailey, Wisham, Orphey and four incoming freshmen to succeed NFL Draft prospects Elijah Mitchell and Trey Ragas and join Smith in UL's 2021 rotation. - Daily Advertiser

Outside linebacker Tyler Guidry is out the rest of the spring with an injury, Ragin' Cajuns coach Billy Napier said after practice Tuesday. Guidry - hurt during practice Saturday, UL's third spring workout - will undergo shoulder surgery Friday, according to Napier. "He'll be back by June and ready to train in the summer," Napier said. Guidry, a sophomore with 30 total tackles in 23 games over two years, had one start last season. The Cajuns opened spring practice without outside linebacker Chauncey Manac, who - Napier revealed for the first time Tuesday - underwent postseason surgery to repair an undisclosed injury and "will be back in the summer." With Manac and now Guidry out, and 2020 Jack outside linebacker starter Joe Dillon taking part in UL's Pro Day on Monday rather than returning for a seventh season, Napier counts A.J. Riley and Tanner Wiggins among those can take advantage of extra snaps this spring. - Daily Advertiser

Jaiave Magalei, UL starting quarterback Levi Lewis' sparingly used backup the past two seasons, has entered the NCAA transfer portal, the USA TODAY Network confirmed Thursday. Also in the portal is Jack outside linebacker Joe Dillon, who finished his six-season Ragin' Cajuns career 1.5 sacks shy of UL's all-time record. Magalei's move comes a few weeks after Lewis, a senior who started the past two seasons, made public his plans to remain for 2021. Magalei - a juco transfer from California's Mt. San Antonio College who played at Lakes High near Tacoma, Washington - was 20 of 28 for 224 passes and one touchdown in 2019. - Daily Advertiser

Two more Ragin' Cajun seniors, both starters, made it known Wednesday they will remain for the 2021 season. Will inside linebacker Ferrod Gardner and receiver Jalen Williams are staying, making it nine from UL who'll take advantage of the extra year of eligibility granted by the NCAA because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The other seven, as previously reported: starting quarterback Levi Lewis; starting left guard Ken Marks; starting kickoff specialist/backup kicker Nate Snyder; starting nose tackle Tayland Humphrey, an NFL prospect; safety Cam Solomon, who started five games in 2020 including UL's First Responder Bowl win over UTSA; Jack outside linebacker Chauncey Manac, who started three 2020 games including the bowl; and reserve nickel back Blair Brooks, a special teams contributor. - Daily Advertiser

Ragin' Cajuns running back Elijah Mitchell announced Sunday he will enter the 2021 NFL Draft. Mitchell, a fourth-year senior from Erath High, follows in the footsteps of the other half of UL's senior running back duo, Trey Ragas, who declared the same Thursday. A Senior Bowl invitee, Mitchell opted to turn pro rather than use the extra year of eligibility granted by the NCAA to all FBS players because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Mitchell ran for a season-high 164 yards and two touchdowns including the game-winner in overtime during a victory in September at Georgia State, and had 127 yards and a TD on 19 carries en route to winning MVP honors in UL's Dec. 26 First Responder Bowl win over UTSA. - Daily Advertiser

Running back Trey Ragas has decided against remaining at UL one more season and instead has declared intent to enter the 2021 NFL Draft. Ragas ran 131 times for 758 yards and 10 touchdowns over 11 games as a fifth-year senior in 2020, including 19 carries for 131 yards in a late-October win at Texas State. The product of Archbishop Shaw High in the New Orleans area redshirted as a freshman in 2017. He finished with 596 attempts for 3,572 career yards and 39 rushing TDs in 49 career games as a Ragin' Cajun, including a career-high 1,181 yards on 207 carries over 14 games as a redshirt sophomore in 2018. - Daily Advertiser
