Dae Dae Hunter ran for 121 yards and accounted for three touchdowns to lead Liberty to a 38-24 victory over Old Dominion on Saturday night. Hunter carried the ball 15 times that included touchdown runs of 29 and 32 yards. In the fourth quarter, Hunter caught a screen pass from Johnathan Bennett and then broke a tackle, ran to the opposite side of the field and into the end zone to cap a 99-yard drive. The 41-yard catch-and-run ended the scoring with 6:55 remaining. Kaidon Salter completed 10 of 19 passes for 170 yards with two touchdown passes and two interceptions for Liberty (4-1). Shedro Louis added 109 yards rushing on 16 carries. Hayden Wolff was 27-of-46 passing for 297 yards with a pair of TD passes for Old Dominion (2-3). - AP College Football

  09/24/22 - Dae Dae HunterrJr/2024, Liberty, 5-09, 190 (DS#999 RB) + More +

Jonathan Bennett threw two touchdown passes and Dae Dae Hunter ran for the clinching touchdown as Liberty defeated Akron 21-12 on Saturday night. Bennett threw touchdown passes of 22 yards to Khaleb Coleman and 30 to Treon Sibley to put the Flames (3-1) up 14-0 in the first minute of the second quarter. The Zips (1-3) had a chance to tie it early in the fourth. DJ Irons hit Alex Adams for an 11-yard score to pull Akron within 14-12 but Irons was stopped on a 2-point conversion run. The Zips final four drives did not produce a threat. Bennett, Liberty's third-string quarterback, was 13 of 27 for 152 yards and an interception. With the offense struggling following the early lead, fourth-straight quarter Nate Hampton entered the game to engineer the key drive.

Starting on their own 48, Hunter carried four times, including a 31-yard burst, and Hampton had back-to-back carries for 12 yards. Eventually Hunter capped it with a 1-yard plunge. Hunter finished with 118 yards on 18 carries. Irons was 29 of 52 for 269 yards. The Flames lost quarterback Charlie Brewer in the first quarter of the season opener and Kaidon Salter, who started the last two games, sat out with a groin injury after nearly leading the Flames past Wake Forest last week. - Liberty/AP College Football

  09/01/22 - Charlie BrewerrSr/2023, Liberty, 6-1, 200 (DS#25 QB) + More +

2022 PRESEASON JOHNNY UNITAS GOLDEN ARM AWARD WATCH LIST: Charlie Brewer, Liberty,...This is the second time in Brewer's career he has been named to the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award watch list. After leading Baylor to an appearance in the 2020 Sugar Bowl and 11-3 record, Brewer was named to the watch list prior to the 2020 season. During his four-year playing career at Baylor (2017-20), Brewer led the Bears with 9,700 passing yards and 65 touchdowns. He is the second player in Baylor history with 10,000 career total yards (9,700 passing and 1,039 rushing). The quarterback also completed 63.5 percent of his pass attempts at Baylor (828-of-1,304) in 44 career games. The native of Austin, Texas, has been named to multiple preseason award watch lists during his playing career: 2020 Davey O'Brien Award, 2020 Maxwell Award, 2020 Manning Award, 2020 Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award and the 2019 Maxwell Award watch list. - Liberty Football

  08/22/22 - TreShaun ClarkrSr/2024, Liberty, 6-1, 250 (DS#999 OLB) + More +

No defensive lineman has been as consistent as TreShaun Clark over the last three seasons. The Danville native, a starter at end since his freshman season, has the highest ceiling in terms of NFL potential with his size, athleticism and ability to make plays in both the run and pass game. Clark posted a career-high 44 tackles in 2021, but his sack numbers dropped a tad after recording 5.5 sacks in 2020. Teams were scheming to slow him down off the edge, but with a healthy Durrell Johnson at bandit and arguably stronger interior linemen, Clark has the opportunity to see an increase in his production.

Clark took a step forward in being a leader in the locker room in 2020 when he helped organize a Black Lives Matter rally on campus, and he's only becoming more and more vocal in working with his teammates during practices and in games. "Those guys have been exactly what I want them to be. Durrell is more vocal, TreShaun is more vocal, they're leading by example," Garrett said. "Here's a great example of those guys' leadership. During a special teams block, those guys are watching film as a D-line. The entire D-line, and we have guys like Kendy and Dennis and Durrell and TreShaun leading that meeting amongst those guys. I think that's really good and a good sign of the leadership that they're showing." - Lynchburg News and Advance

  08/13/22 - Quinton ReeserSr/2025, Liberty, 6-0, 195 (DS#67 FS) + More +

Ahmad Walker and Quinton Reese were familiar faces around Liberty's indoor practice facility during spring practices. The two sported blue non-contact jerseys and couldn't participate in drills, but they were eager observers as they absorbed everything in front of them. The defense was undergoing a transformation under new coordinators. Walker and Reese weren't practicing or running through the intricacies of new schemes. Instead, they were visualizing each move and spending time in the film room, ensuring they were ready for training camp.

Not bad for a sophomore linebacker like Walker or a redshirt sophomore safety like Reese, two players who are expected to be significant contributors for a defense looking to build on back-to-back campaigns of finishing 11th nationally in total defense. "It was a pretty good learning experience with what we're doing with the new defense and everything," Walker said of approaching the spring practices. "I feel like it's going to be good for the defense, and I feel like we'll be able to play faster and smarter." Walker had scheduled surgery to clean up some damage in one of his knees, something position coach Josh Aldridge said "wasn't anything major," and Reese finally got back on the field earlier this month after suffering a torn bicep in the Flames' 41-13 win over Middle Tennessee on Oct. 9, 2021. The injury kept Reese out for the final six regular-season games and the Flames' lopsided win over Eastern Michigan in the LendingTree Bowl. - Lynchburg News and Advance

  08/09/22 - Charlie BrewerrSr/2023, Liberty, 6-1, 200 (DS#25 QB) + More +

It's the obvious first choice to watch as Hugh Freeze and quarterbacks coach Kent Austin have to replace Malik Willis' production from the past two seasons. Willis rewrote the record books in leading the Flames to their first finish in the Associated Press Top 25 poll after the 2020 campaign, and he was selected by the Tennessee Titans in the third round of the NFL Draft. Freeze and Austin didn't name a starter or eliminate the four scholarship quarterbacks from contention after spring practice.

They wanted to see if Utah transfer Charlie Brewer and holdovers Johnathan Bennett, Kaidon Salter and Nate Hampton could make strides over the summer and enter training camp with a leg up on the others. Brewer has the experience with 47 starts at Baylor and Utah, while the other three have not started a game at the college level. He transferred to Liberty with the expectation of starting, and his success previously running an RPO offense at Baylor provides him with the opportunity to take the first snap at Southern Miss. - Lynchburg News and Advance

  08/09/22 - Elijah CanionrSr/2026, Liberty, 6-4, 230 (DS#269 WR) + More +

Get used to the name Elijah Canion. At least for now. He's a transfer receiver from Auburn that missed spring practice due to an injury. In the first two practices, Canion - who's listed at 6-foot-4 but plays much bigger - has produced several big plays. He made a catch Wednesday in traffic near the sideline and kept both feet in. Impressive. And he kept making plays throughout the two-hour session. "He's a big kid," quarterback Austin Burton said. "He's got good, jumping athletic ability. Pretty interested to see how we use him. Just looking at him, he looks like an athletic freak out there." Granted, it's just two days and the pads aren't even on yet. Let's tap the breaks a little bit. But Canion has left an early impression. Maybe the Florida native puts himself in the rotation throughout the season or maybe he fades away. We'll see. - Indianapolis Star/News

  08/08/22 - John Paul FloresrSr/2025, Liberty, 6-4, 300 (DS#100 OG) + More +

The Virginia Hoos are searching for starters at all five positions on the front, and during training camp, they are trying to assess the five offensive linemen who will best fit together by the time their Sept. 3 season-opening bout with Richmond rolls around. UVa's first O-Line looked different Friday compared to Wednesday when the team opened camp. Most notably, the two tackle spots have been occupied by four different players, and one of those potential tackles - Dartmouth transfer John Paul Flores - is also providing the unit an additional option at center, according to Cavaliers coach Tony Elliott. Sophomore Ty Furnish has taken first-team reps at center while sophomore Noah Josey and senior Derek Devine have seen action at left guard and right guard, respectively. Flores played some right tackle on Friday, but senior Jonathan Leech was there Wednesday after coming off a strong spring. Sophomores Logan Taylor and Charlie Patterson each have gained chances at left tackle. - Charlottesville Daily Progress
