  While watching "Breaking Bad" for the first time last year, a particular scene caught P.J. Fleck's attention. The Minnesota coach had used television shows and movies - "Elf," "Full House" and "Family Matters" among them - as motivation in the past and this one seemed a perfect fit for his defense. In it, Walter White rises in anger during a discussion with his wife, Skyler, explaining no one was going to come knocking on their door and shoot them. "I'm the one who knocks!" he shouts. So does Minnesota's defense. Ky Thomas ran for 144 yards and a touchdown, Mar'Kiese Irving added 129 yards rushing and Minnesota shut down West Virginia to win the Guaranteed Rate Bowl 18-6 on Tuesday night. "We wanted to be the defense that knocks and I thought we did that," Fleck said. "It was just kind of a theme our guys rallied around." Thomas and Irving became the Gophers' 1-2 punch after Mohamed Ibrahim and Trey Potts sustained season-ending injuries. The two running backs carried most of the load offensively against West Virginia (6-7), accounting for 273 of Minnesota's 358 total yards.   2021 ALL-MAC FIRST TEAM (COACHES): Quarterback - Dustin Crum, Kent State,...Crum joins running back Eric Wilkerson who earned the Player of the Year honor in 1987 as the only Kent State players to win the award and took home first-team all-conference honors as well. Crum has had a stellar season in which he has thrown for 2,794 yards and 15 touchdowns against four interceptions while completing 65 percent of his passes.   2021 ALL-MAC SECOND TEAM (COACHES): Offensive Lineman - Bill Kuduk, Kent State,...The Kent State offensive line was well represented with Bill Kuduk earning second team all-conference honors and Nathan Monnin getting named to the third team. The Golden Flashes lead the MAC with 488 yards of offense per game a mark that jumps to 512 yards per game in MAC play. It's been a balanced attack led by the number three rushing attack in the FBS at 247 yards per game. Glass tied for the MAC lead with 19 made field goals this season and has missed just three times in MAC play. He has converted all 43 of his extra points on the year. He is just the sixth Golden Flash to top 100 points in a season.   Dustin Crum scored from the 1 on a misdirection play in overtime, and Montre Miller broke up a two-point conversion pass as Kent State held off Miami (Ohio) 48-47 on Saturday to earn a spot in the Mid-American Conference championship game. The win, played in swirling snow flurries, lofted Kent State (7-5, 6-2) to the MAC East title and set up a tilt against West champion, Northern Illinois, Saturday in Detroit for the conference crown.

Crum threw for 325 yards and two touchdowns, Keshunn Abram had seven catches for 138 yards and a TD. Xavier Williams carried 13 times for 168 yards and two scores, Marquez Cooper added 128 yards rushing and a touchdown. Brett Gabbert threw for 405 yards and four touchdowns for the RedHawks (6-6, 5-3) and lofted a pretty rainbow to Jalen Walker at the front of the end zone on Miami's first play of overtime.   Ky Thomas ran for 105 yards and a career-high two scores, Tanner Morgan threw two touchdown passes and Minnesota scored 14 points the final 46 seconds of the first half Saturday to pull away from Indiana 35-14. Minnesota (7-4, 5-3 Big Ten) ended a two-game losing streak. The Hoosiers (2-9, 0-7) have lost seven straight. Indiana started fast, capping an impressive opening drive with quarterback Donaven McCulley scooping up a fumbled snap and scoring from 11 yards out.

Thomas' 2-yard TD run tied the score midway through the second quarter and his 1-yard run with 46 seconds left in the half gave Minnesota a 14-7 lead. The Gophers took control after Tyler Nubin picked off McCulley, a true freshman, and returned it to the Hoosiers 31-yard line. Three plays later, Tanner Morgan found Chris Autman-Bell for a 14-yard TD pass with 9 seconds left.   Dustin Crum ran for 114 yards and two touchdowns and Kent State defeated Akron 38-0 on Saturday. The win for the Golden Flashes (6-5, 5-2) sets up a home showdown with Miami (Ohio), also 5-2, for the Mid-American Conference East title in a regular-season final next Saturday. Crum had 104 yards and his two rushing scores by halftime. He ran for a pair of 10-yard touchdowns and Bryan Bradford added a 29-yarder in the second quarter when the Golden Flashes scored 22 points to lead 29-0. Marquez Cooper had 25 carries for 135 yards and a score for Kent State, which came into the game with the MAC's top offense, averaging 37 points per game and nearly 500 yards offense.   Dustin Crum passed for two touchdowns and rushed for two scores, and Kent State used a 31-point second quarter to beat Northern Illinois 52-47 on Wednesday night. Kent State ended a 10-game losing streak in the series, getting its first win against Northern Illinois since 2001. Northern Illinois led 7-0 after the first quarter but Kent State had four straight touchdown scoring drives in the second quarter, each taking less than 75 seconds, to build a 31-21 lead at the break. The Golden Flash finished with seven touchdowns, the drives averaging 1:12.

Nykeim Johnson added a rushing and receiving touchdown in the third quarter for a 45-27 lead, and Marquez Cooper's 36-yard touchdown made it 52-40. Following NIU's TD to get within five points, Kent State chewed up the final 5:07 for its longest drive of the game. Crum was 20 of 30 for 322 yards, and carried it four times for 72 yards for Kent State (5-4, 4-1 Mid-American Conference). Cooper finished with 173 yards rushing and two scores, and Xavier Williams ran for 103. Dante Cephas had five catches for 124 yards. Rocky Lombardi and Trayvon Rudolph each set program records for Northern Illinois (6-3, 4-1). Rudolph, who scored a 75-yard touchdown for a second straight week, had 309 yards receiving to pass Sam Hurd's 266 in 2005.
