Ty Zentner kicked a 31-yard field goal in overtime as 13th-ranked Kansas State beat No. 3 TCU 31-28 in the Big 12 championship game Saturday, leaving the Horned Frogs to wait another day to find out if they had already done enough to get into the four-team College Football Playoff. The Wildcats set up the winning field goal after TCU (12-1) had the opening possession of overtime and Kendre Miller was stopped short on consecutive plays from inside the 1. Deuce Vaughn ran for 130 yards and a touchdown and Will Howard threw two TDs for the Wildcats (10-3, No. 10 CFP), who six weeks earlier had jumped out to a 28-10 lead early in the second quarter before TCU scored the game's last 28 points.

That was one of five games the Horned Frogs (12-1, No. 3 CFP) won when trailing after halftime. But they couldn't do it again with the chance to guarantee being the first Big 12 team other than Oklahoma to make the playoff. TCU, the first Big 12 team to complete a regular season undefeated since Texas in 2009, could still get into the playoff. While their case was helped when fourth-ranked Southern California (11-2) lost 47-24 to Utah in the Pac-12 championship game Friday night, the Frogs now have to wait until the final CFP rankings come out Sunday. Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark said before the game that TCU, with first-year coach Sonny Dykes, already deserved to be in the playoff. "You look at their strength of schedule. You think about how they've performed all year long," Yormark said. "I think regardless, they should be in, for sure." - Kansas State/AP College Football

Will Howard threw for 213 yards and two touchdowns, Deuce Vaughn ran for 147 yards and a score, and No. 15 Kansas State pounded Kansas 47-27 on Saturday night to earn a shot at payback against TCU in the Big 12 championship game. Malik Knowles added a pair of touchdown runs, and Philip Brooks and Sammy Wheeler also reached the end zone, as the Wildcats (9-3, 7-2, No. 12 CFP) beat their biggest rival for the 14th straight time in a game they needed to win. Kansas State blew a 28-10 lead and lost 38-28 to the Horned Frogs during the regular season. Now, they'll face each other again on Dec. 3 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, with a College Football Playoff spot likely on the line for TCU. It will be the first time the Wildcats play in the Big 12 title game, which went on hiatus from 2010-17, since toppling then-No. 1 Oklahoma in 2003 during Hall of Fame coach Bill Snyder's first tenure.

The Horned Frogs were beaten by the Sooners in their only previous appearance in the 2017 championship game. Jalon Daniels threw for 168 yards while running for a touchdown, and Devin Neal also had two TD runs, as the Jayhawks - bowl-bound for the first time since 2008 - finished the regular season by losing six of their final seven games. Kansas (6-6, 3-6) made enough mistakes in the first quarter alone Saturday night to fill an entire game. The result was a hole it could never escape. The trouble began when O.J. Burroughs muffed a punt after a nice stand by the Jayhawks' defense, and Knowles needed one play to scoot in from the 5 for a touchdown. And after Kansas answered with a 75-yard scoring drive, its defense blew the coverage on Wheeler on a 42-yard touchdown pass. On the ensuing kickoff, Trevor Wilson was mobbed at the 10-yard line, and another penalty on the return buried the Kansas offense. On third down, Bryce Cabeldue was called for holding in the end zone to give Kansas State a safety. After the free kick, the Wildcats cruised to the end zone again for a 23-7 lead after one quarter. - Kansas State/AP College Football

His sacks total tied for the fourth most in school history and the 12th most in the nation this season. It is the third time this year a Wildcat had 3.0 sacks in a game as K-State is one of only two teams (San Jose State) to have three players with 3.0-sack games this season. Mott also pressured the quarterback on an interception by Cincere Mason that was returned 37 yards for a touchdown. - Big 12 Football

Adrian Martinez's 48 turnovers while at Nebraska from 2017-21 were most in the nation. Now at Kansas State, Martinez threw an interception and lost a fumble against Texas for his first two turnovers of the season. Among Bowl Subdivision quarterbacks with a minimum of 15 pass attempts per game, Martinez is among six who have committed two or fewer turnovers, according to Sportradar. Martinez's interception came on his 155th pass of the season. He set the school record for most pass attempts into a season before throwing an interception. Chad May went 151 passes without a pick to begin the 1994 season. - AP College Football

The Kansas State defense made a huge statement in a matchup of Top 25 teams yesterday. Oklahoma State was averaging 45.7 points per game and 466.9 yards of total offense. The Cowboys left Kansas State with zero points and 217 yards of offense in a 48-0 blanking by the Wildcats. This was the first time since 1992 that Kansas State has shutout the Cowboys. The win vaulted Kansas State to No. 14 and Oklahoma State fell to No. 18. - American Football Coaches Association

Will Howard threw for 296 yards and four touchdowns, Deuce Vaughn ran for 158 yards and another score, and No. 22 Kansas State dealt ninth-ranked Oklahoma State its first shutout loss since 2009 with a 48-0 victory Saturday. Kade Warner caught five passes for 97 yards and two scores, and Malik Knowles had eight catches for 113 yards, while a late interception gave the Wildcats (6-2, 4-1 Big 12) their first shutout of the Cowboys since a 10-0 win on Nov. 21, 1992. Oklahoma State's Spencer Sanders was just 13 of 26 for 147 yards with an interception before landing hard on his shoulder midway through the fourth quarter. The star quarterback did not return to the game. Kansas State scored touchdowns on its first two possessions, finished with 495 yards of total offense and held Oklahoma State (6-2, 3-2), which had been the nation's No. 3 scoring offense at 44.7 points per game, to just 217 yards.

The Cowboys' most lopsided loss in nearly 18 seasons under coach Mike Gundy was also their first shutout loss to anyone since Nov. 28, 2009, when they lost 27-0 to Oklahoma in the Bedlam game. The Wildcats have had some strangely easy wins over Oklahoma State. The last time a Gundy team was held to 12 points or fewer was in a 31-12 loss in Manhattan in 2018, and the last time the Cowboys trailed any game by at least 38 points was during a 48-14 loss to the Wildcats in 2014. The biggest question surrounding Kansas State was the health of its own quarterback, Adrian Martinez, who played just four snaps in last week's loss to TCU because of a knee injury. And while he warmed up with the starters Saturday, it was the veteran backup Howard who headed out to the field on the opening possession of the game. Howard proceeded to torture the banged-up Cowboys defense for the next 30 minutes. He capped the opening drive by hitting Warner on fourth-and-10 for a 38-yard TD reception. Then, after Vaughn ripped off a 62-yard touchdown run, Howard threw a 31-yard third-down scoring strike to Phillip Brooks to make it 21-0. - Kansas State/AP College Football

Kansas State football coach Chris Klieman doesn't know who will start at quarterback for the Wildcats when they play the Oklahoma State Cowboys on Saturday at Bill Snyder Family Stadium. He is hopeful that Nebraska transfer Adrian Martinez will be healthy enough to lead the K-State offense, but it is too early for Klieman to say anything definitive about Martinez's status. "He didn't do anything yesterday," Klieman said of Martinez during his weekly news conference on Tuesday. "I don't know if he will be available." Martinez took every meaningful snap for the Wildcats in their first six games, throwing for 900 yards and four touchdowns on top of rushing for 546 yards and nine touchdowns, but his health status has been a mystery since he suffered a lower-body injury in the first quarter of a 38-28 loss at TCU on Saturday.

He had been dealing with a lingering knee injury since the Iowa State game, and it is suspected that he re-aggravated it against the Horned Frogs. Unable to finish out the game, he spent a few minutes in the locker room with team trainers and then watched the final three quarters from the sideline in full uniform. Klieman didn't share many details about the injury, but he said it wasn't season ending. He went on to say that Martinez will likely get a few days off and then try to lead practice later in the week. If he is able to run at full speed and throw without pain, he will likely play against the Cowboys. If not, the Wildcats will likely turn to Howard. - The Kansas City Star

  10/17/22 - Jordan RileySr/2025, Kansas State, 5-11, 197 (DS#45 FS) + More +

OCT 17 MAC WEST DIVISION DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Jordan Riley, Ball State, Safety, Sophomore, Clinton, Md. (National Christian Academy),...Jordan Riley had a career-high 14 tackles to help Ball State keep UConn at bay in its third consecutive double-digit comeback. Riley had the key play of the game defensively when he forced a fumble when the game was 21-13 in favor of the Huskies. The Cardinals pounced on the ball and scored four plays later to key the comeback. Riley and the defense shut out UConn in the second half, limiting the Huskies to just 53 yards on 30 plays and induced a pair of turnovers. Riley is 10th in the conference in total tackles and is the only player in the conference to have 57 tackles and seven passes defended this season. - MAC Football

OCT 10 BIG 12 DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: K-State's Josh Hayes led No. 20 K-State's defense in a 10-9 win at Iowa State with 11 tackles, including one for loss, and one pass breakup. The Wildcats held ISU to three field goals and allowed only one series into the red zone. The nine points were the fewest against a Big 12 opponent since the 2018 Texas Tech game (6) and the fewest in a Big 12 road game since the 2016 TCU contest (6). In a tightly contested series against Iowa State, it was the fewest points surrendered to the Cyclones since 2013 (7) and the fewest allowed in Ames since 2003 (0). - Big 12 Football
