Chris Kleiman views himself as a caretaker for Kansas State football, sustaining and building on the traditions that predecessor Bill Snyder established over more than two decades. Turns out that applies to the Wildcats' dominance of Kansas. Skylar Thompson ran for 127 yards and three touchdowns, Harry Trotter added 92 yards rushing and another score, and No. 22 Kansas State romped to a 38-10 win in the Sunflower Showdown on Saturday to continue a streak of dominance that Snyder established and relished.

Thompson also had 129 yards passing for the Wildcats (6-2, 3-2), who showed no letdown from their upset of then-No. 5 Oklahoma in bludgeoning the Jayhawks (3-6, 1-5) for the 23rd time in 27 games. "It was our best football game of the year," Klieman said. Carter Stanley was 13 of 23 for 115 yards and two interceptions for Kansas before leaving with an injury late in the game. Star running back Pooka Williams managed just 61 yards rushing. The Wildcats held new coach Les Miles' team to 241 yards of offense, a 2-for-10 mark on third down and stopped it on both fourth down tries. Kansas State also had four sacks, dominated the time of possession and had 342 yards rushing in what turned into a lopsided affair. - Kansas State/AP College Football

OCT 28 MISSOURI VALLEY DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: CB Josh Hayes, North Dakota State, 5-11, 186, Jr., Lakeland, Fla. (Lake Gibson HS),...Hayes' first career interception came was a big one for North Dakota State in a 23-16 win at South Dakota State. On third-and-9, his leaping catch at the 15-yard line stopped SDSU with 4:56 left and kept the game tied at 16 and the Bison answered with a touchdown on the next drive. Hayes finished with six tackles - all solos - and also had a pass breakup. - Missouri Valley Conference Football

Skylar Thompson and Kansas State dealt a big blow to No. 5 Oklahoma's national title hopes. The Wildcats' quarterback threw for 213 yards while running for four touchdowns, the defense did just enough against Heisman Trophy contender Jalen Hurts and the Sooners' prolific offense, and Kansas State held on through a harrowing fourth quarter for a 48-41 victory Saturday. It wasn't certain until Oklahoma (7-1, 4-1) tried on onside kick with 1:45 left. The ball caromed downfield and the Sooners recovered, but a review showed one of their players touched it one yard early.

The overturned call allowed new coach Chris Klieman to run out the clock on the Wildcats' first home win over the Sooners since 1996, and just their third win in Manhattan over a top-10 team. It also was the third consecutive week a top-10 team lost to an unranked foe. James Gilbert ran for 105 yards and a touchdown, and Joshua Youngblood also reached the end zone, as the Wildcats (5-2, 2-2) snapped the Sooners' nation-leading 22-game road winning streak. Their last true road defeat? At TCU, five years and 22 days ago. Hurts threw for 395 yards and a touchdown while running for 95 yards and three more. But despite another big game by the nation's leader in total offense, the Sooners couldn't overcome a multitude of mistakes: two turnovers, costly penalties and the ejection of one of their defensive leaders. - Kansas State/AP College Football

For the first time in over a month, Kansas State walked off the field with a win. Skylar Thompson accounted for two touchdowns and sparked a late game-winning drive to lead the Wildcats to a 24-17 victory over TCU on Saturday and their first Big 12 Conference win of the season. With eight minutes to play and the game tied 17-17, Thompson had a 61-yard run during an 11-play, 95-yard drive, capped by his 3-yard touchdown run with 2:45 to play. "I knew it was just a matter of time because we were finally getting in a rhythm offensively," Thompson said. "It was a great play call, but they gave us the look we were expecting on that touchdown and we executed the play."

TCU drove to the Kansas State 37 on the ensuing series, but couldn't convert on fourth-and-11. "Just the toughness and resolve because he got hit a lot and he always just kept coming back," Kansas State coach Chris Klieman said of Thompson. Thompson threw for 172 yards, including a 21-yard touchdown pass to Nick Lenners in the first quarter. It was Lenners first career touchdown reception. "It was unbelievable," Lenners said. It was everything I've ever dreamed of." The Wildcats (4-2, 1-2) finished with only 266 yards of offense and was stifled most of the game. One of their scores came off a blocked punt in the first quarter, and they were unable to connect on numerous long passes down the field. - Kansas State/AP College Football

With the Bison holding a four-point lead and UNI driving to start the second half, Hayes forced a fumble that NDSU recovered at the UNI 35 to set up a touchdown two plays later and give NDSU a two-score lead.   Adrian Martinez passed for 327 yards and three touchdowns to lead Nebraska over Illinois 42-38 Saturday night in the Big Ten Conference opener for both teams. The Cornhuskers (3-1, 1-0) put up 690 yards of total offense compared to 299 by Illinois (2-2, 0-1). Martinez also rushed 18 times for 188 yards. Wan'Dale Robinson carried the ball 19 times for 89 yards and a touchdown. Dedrick Mills rushed 12 times for 62 yards and a touchdown.

"He (Martinez) is a good player. I'm glad he wears the scarlet and cream," said Nebraska coach Scott Frost. "He goes in and wants to take over a game. He is clearly capable of that." Brandon Peters was 9 of 22 for 78 yards passing with a touchdown and one interception for Illinois. Reggie Corbin carried the ball 20 times for 134 yards and a touchdown. Ra'Von Bonner and Peters also had rushing touchdowns for the Illini. - Nebraska/AP College Football

Adrian Martinez threw for two touchdowns and ran for another, Dedrick Mills rushed for 116 yards and Nebraska beat Northern Illinois 44-8 on Saturday night. The Cornhuskers (2-1) bounced back from blowing a 17-point lead in an overtime loss at Colorado last week. NIU (1-2) won 21-17 in Lincoln two years ago but was no match this time. Nebraska had 525 yards of total offense, limited the Huskies to 74 yards rushing and posted its largest margin of victory over a Football Bowl Subdivision opponent since a 39-point win over South Alabama in 2015.

"What's made us good as a staff is always keeping a foot on the gas," Nebraska coach Scott Frost said. "I want our guys to play like that all the time." Martinez threw for 257 yards and had 301 yards of total offense, the ninth time in 14 career starts he's gone over 300. "Adrian is going to keep getting better, too," Frost said. "There are still some things he needs to learn. But he's still a true sophomore. He's a really good player and he's going to make whatever plays we need him to." - Nebraska/AP College Football

Skylar Thompson only threw one touchdown pass in Kansas State's 31-24 road win at Mississippi State, but boy was it a big one. With 5:37 left in the fourth quarter and the game tied 24-24, Thompson rolled out and found Dalton Schoen wide open in the right side of the end zone and hit him with a 15-yard pass that would ultimately stand as the game-winner. "He lives for those moments," KSU head coach Klieman said. "He's prepared for that moment."

Thompson threw for 123 yards on 10-of-18 passing and managed to keep the Wildcat offense from crumbling under the pressure of self-inflicted wounds and a hostile crowd. It is the first time Kansas State has beaten a Power Five nonconference team on the road since 2011. "I thought he did a great job of staying calm under a lot of pressure," Klieman said. "I think we were running the football pretty successfully in the first half, and I think in the second half they decided they were going to find a way to bring pressure." KSU (3-0) led 17-14 at halftime but trailed 24-17 in the fourth quarter. Then a 100-yard Malik Knowles kickoff return tied the game, and Thompson's touchdown pass gave the Wildcats a 7-point lead. - AP College Football

  09/07/19 - James GilbertrSr/2020, Kansas State, 5-08, 197 (DS#60 RB) + More +

Kansas State totaled more than 500 offensive yards in consecutive games for the first time in school history on Saturday after dismantling Bowling Green 52-0. The Wildcats look to dominate to start the season after outscoring Nicholls and Bowling Green 111-14 combined. "I challenged the guys this week to improve upon week one and in particular this morning to get the fight started quickly and jump on them from the start," head coach Chris Klieman said. "I was so pleased." The Wildcats did just that, holding their opponent scoreless in the first half for the second straight week.

It was an offensive mismatch as Malik Knowles had 99 receiving yards and two touchdown catches and Skylar Thompson threw for 151 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Knowles missed a few catches last week, but made up for those against the Falcons "It was relieving, that was my main focus throughout the week to make sure that didn't happen again," Knowles said. James Gilbert led the Wildcats' ground game for the second straight game with 103 rushing yards and found the end zone twice. Jordan Brown, Harry Trotter and Joe Ervin also provided rushing touchdowns. Kansas State has scored 10 rushing touchdowns in two games. The Wildcats played many freshmen, including Ervin and Jacardia Wright, who combined for 22 carries, 87 yards and a touchdown. - AP College Football

Chris Klieman's debut as the coach at Kansas State couldn't have gone a whole lot better. The Wildcats rolled up 573 total yards while holding Nicholls to just 276. Six different players scored a touchdown, including defensive back Jonathan Alexander. Kansas State committed just two penalties and never turned the ball over. But when asked what he liked most in the 49-14 rout, Klieman replied: "That it's over."

"It was a lot of nervous energy. Nobody knows where they're supposed to be pregame. This first week was kind of a circus," said Klieman, who led North Dakota State to four national titles in five seasons before taking over for the retired Bill Snyder last winter. "It's exciting. I'm a competitor by nature and it is fun to win. But I was more excited to see the guys have fun." They had plenty to enjoy. Skylar Thompson threw for 212 yards and accounted for two touchdowns. James Gilbert paced a Kansas State running attack that rolled up 361 yards by going for 115 and a score. Jordan Brown, Harry Trotter and Tyler Burns also ran for touchdowns in a game that was never in doubt. - AP College Football
