  05/18/20 - Sammy WheelerrSr/2023, Kansas State, 6-5, 232 (DS#56 TE) + More +

Kansas State tight end Sammy Wheeler was arrested Sunday morning on multiple charges. The Kansas State University Police Department arrested Wheeler at 12:43 a.m. Sunday in the 1100 block of Thurston Street on charges of unlawful use of a driver's license, purchase/possession/consumption of liquor by a minor (first offense) and interference with a law enforcement officer (intending to obstruct by falsely reporting information). Authorities added a fourth charge Monday morning: urinating in public. He's free after posting a $500 bond. The football program had no official statement on Wheeler's arrest; a spokesperson told The Mercury on Sunday that "the matter will be handled internally." A rising third-year sophomore, Wheeler appeared in seven games last fall before suffering a season-ending ACL injury in K-State's 38-10 win at Kansas on Nov. 2. He finished with four catches for 78 yards in 2019. - Manhattan Mercury

  04/18/20 - Briley MoorerSr/2021, Kansas State, 6-4, 240 (DS#15 TE) + More +

Kansas State bolstered its tight end depth Friday. Briley Moore, a graduate transfer from Northern Iowa, gave his pledge to the Wildcats in a message he posted on his personal Twitter account. Moore included a graphic of himself wearing a K-State jersey with the caption "The next chapter ... "Moore chose K-State over his other two finalists, Baylor and Missouri. A Blue Springs native, Moore played at Blue Springs South High School before joining Northern Iowa in 2016. As the years went on, his importance in the Panthers' offense grew. After collecting four receptions for 60 yards and a touchdown as a freshman, his numbers rose to 38 catches and 494 yards as a sophomore. Moore was even better as a junior in 2018, earning first-team All-Missouri Valley Conference honors after leading the team in receiving yards (536) to go along with four touchdowns on 36 receptions. - Manhattan Mercury

  04/15/20 - AJ ParkerSr/2021, Kansas State, 5-11, 182 (DS#52 CB) + More +

AJ Parker already has worked through the range of emotions one deals with during an injury. Frustration. Loneliness. Depression. Now, he's feeling differently - eager and enthusiastic. Parker, a rising senior cornerback at Kansas State, saw last season end prematurely after he fractured his ankle in the team's 38-10 win at Kansas on Nov. 2. Parker's rehab is on schedule, according to cornerbacks coach Van Malone. "As we were in our workouts, he would do some things," Malone said during a teleconference Wednesday. "So I thought he was progressing along well. ... He did participate at different times in our morning workouts."

Parker started the first eight games of the 2019 campaign at corner prior to his injury. At the time he went down, Parker had a team-high three interceptions, a total that had been tied for second most in the Big 12. He ended the season with 28 tackles (2.5 for loss) and five pass breakups to go along with the three interceptions, numbers good enough to earn him an All-Big 12 honorable mention accolade from the conference's coaches. While Malone conceded that Parker is doing well working on his own - because of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, K-State's campus is shut down, preventing Parker and the rest of the Wildcats' players from visiting with coaches, trainers or the medical staff - the coach said it didn't compare to the type of care and treatment the senior would have received at the football facility. - Manhattan Mercury

Kansas State officially hired Steve Stanard as its new linebackers coach Monday. He replaces Scottie Hazelton, who coached K-State's linebackers in addition to his duties as defensive coordinator last season. After being down one coach following the departure of defensive coordinator Scottie Hazelton for the same position at Michigan State, Klieman officially filled the final vacancy on his staff Monday, hiring Steve Stanard as the team's new linebackers coach. Stanard spent the last three seasons as Syracuse's defensive ends coach. He coached alongside Klieman at North Dakota State in 2012 and 2013, when Klieman was the Bison's defensive coordinator and Stanard guided the team's linebackers.

Stanard helped Syracuse force 56 turnovers (2.2 per game) in the past two seasons, with the Orange boasting a plus-22 turnover margin during that span. Stanard tutored Alton Robinson and Kendall Coleman, a pair that became one of the ACC's most productive tandems during that time. Robinson collected 32.5 career tackles for loss and finished his career seventh in school history with 17.5 sacks, while Coleman recorded 26.5 tackles for loss and 15.5 sacks. - Manhattan Mercury

Two more Kansas State players are in legal trouble after being arrested. Safety Wayne Jones, 19, and linebacker Daniel Green, 21, were arrested together Monday night on a charge of marijuana possession, Riley County police said. Green was also charged with driving while suspended, WIBW reported. The players each were released after posting $1,000 bond. Three other Wildcats football players were arrested during the weekend. Freshman running back Jacardia Wright was arrested Sunday morning on an outstanding warrant for failing to show proof of insurance. Freshman linebacker DeMarrquese Hayes and sophomore linebacker Nick Allen were arrested separately Saturday night on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Coach Chris Klieman said Tuesday he was "extremely disappointed in the poor choices made recently by some of our student-athletes." - AP College Football

Nebraska announced Friday that offensive coordinator Troy Walters has left the program, ending a four-year working relationship with head coach Scott Frost. The program said Walters, who also served as receivers coach, was leaving by mutual agreement with the Cornhuskers. No other details were given. Walters had worked with Frost for four years, the last two at Nebraska and the previous two at Central Florida. Walters was a finalist for the 2017 Broyles Award, given annually to the nation's top assistant coach. "Troy has been a valued member of our coaching staff for the past four years," Frost said. "Troy is a good mentor for his players, provides great energy on and off the field, and carries himself with a presence off the field that will be missed. I want to thank him for his work on our coaching staff, and wish him and his family all the best going forward."

Though Walters was offensive coordinator, Frost has handled the play-calling. The Huskers were 5-7 last season, a one-win improvement over 2018, but the offensive production declined partly because of injuries to quarterback Adrian Martinez. The Huskers' receivers also underperformed. Walters also had coaching stings at Indiana State, Texas A&M, North Carolina State and Colorado. The former Stanford receiver also played for four teams during an eight-year career in the NFL. - AP College Football
