Just seven months after his long-awaited return, tight end Daniel Imatorbhebhe is leaving USC. Imatorbhebhe entered the NCAA transfer portal as a graduate transfer this week, closing the door on a frustrating, injury-prone tenure with the Trojans. Imatorbhebhe began his career at Florida, but soon transferred to USC, where he burst onto the scene as a redshirt freshman during USC's 2016 run to the Rose Bowl. The tight end caught four touchdown passes over the season's final eight games, emerging as a favorite red-zone target of quarterback Sam Darnold. But nagging groin and hip injuries followed him from there, sapping him of his effectiveness as a sophomore, before robbing him of an entire season in 2018. The following summer, USC listed him as a "squadman lost," and coach Clay Helton announced that Imatorbhebhe would leave the team to "focus on finalizing his master's degree." - Los Angeles Times

The Legislature on Tuesday gave final 37-6 approval to a bill that would allow college athletes in Nebraska to earn money through personal endorsement of products and use of their name, image or likeness. The measure (LB962), sponsored by Sen. Megan Hunt of Omaha, was modeled after legislation enacted by California lawmakers a year ago. The proposal, part of a growing movement that would dramatically alter the traditional status of amateur college athletes, will head to Gov. Pete Ricketts' desk. Hunt's Nebraska Fair Pay to Play Act would also allow athletes to make money by promoting sponsored content on social media and by giving private lessons or hosting camps.

Opponents of the change have argued that it will ignite a new kind of bidding war in the recruitment of college athletes in which donors or business leaders may play a leading role in offering the prospect of lucrative endorsement prospects or opportunities to recruits. Supporters have argued that universities, TV sports networks and other businesses are enriched by the performance of college athletes while they receive no financial benefit beyond athletic scholarships and accompanying benefits provided by the universities they attend. "With more than 25 states looking at this issue, Nebraska has an opportunity to be a leader in providing economic freedoms to college athletes," Hunt said in a statement following enactment of the bill. Whether the college football season takes place this fall or in the spring, plenty of eyes will be trained on Kansas State's Wyatt Hubert. A rising fourth-year junior, Hubert was named to the watch list for the Chuck Bednarik Award on Monday. The award, presented by the Maxwell Football Club, annually is given to the player judged to be the best defender in the country. One of the top returning defensive ends in the nation, Hubert is the first Wildcat to land on the award's preseason watch list since D.J. Reed in 2017. Adrian Martinez's struggle was real last season. But the Nebraska junior quarterback thinks what he learned could produce benefits that are just as real. He sheds quite a bit of light during a recent "No Struggle No Story" podcast, acknowledging that his injuries last season coupled with his team's losing wore on him mentally. He also acknowledged the inherent challenges Nebraska faces in striving to become a national power again. Throughout the interview, the California native shows signs of personal growth. Yeah, the whole college thing - learning, coping, growing, thriving - seemingly is working for him. "A big operation like this, turning around one of the top football programs in the country, is tough," said Martinez, noting the strength of the Big Ten Conference. "It's going to take some time. I think we knew that."

He's now 9-12 in two seasons as Nebraska's starting quarterback after going 5-5 in 2019. Coming off a strong freshman season in 2018, he admits he felt the weight of high expectations entering last year. Then came an overtime loss at Colorado in the second game, then a 48-7 home loss to Ohio State in the fifth game. He felt pressure mounting. "It was tough," said the 6-foot-2, 225-pound native of Fresno. "I won't lie. It definitely got to me a bit during that stretch of the year, when we lost to Ohio State in a big way in a prime-time game. That was tough. We were hoping for a better result." He alluded to his injuries. First, it was a knee injury that occurred near the end of an Oct. 5 home win against Northwestern. Nebraska quarterback Adrian Martinez endured what many considered to be a sophomore slump last season. He's apparently working hard this offseason to bust out of the slump. "I think there's some things that he's done differently this year that will give him an opportunity to be better," Husker head coach Scott Frost said Monday. Asked for specifics, the coach said, "I think it's just his mindset and his approach. He came in his first year and had to compete for that spot, and he looked like a competitor every single day in practice."

Martinez's mindset carried into competition as the 6-foot-2, 220-pound Californian averaged a school-record 295.1 yards of total offense per game and was named a freshman All-American by the Football Writers Association of America. "Year 2, because of the situation, I think he was able to put it in cruise control a little more, and I think that showed up on the field a little bit," Frost said. "That's not to put everything on him. There's a lot of things he couldn't control. But I don't think he'll be lax in his preparation ever again." After completing 64.6% of his passes as a freshman, Martinez dipped to 59.4% last season. After averaging 237.9 passing yards per game in 2018, he averaged 195.6 in 2019. - Lincoln Journal Star

Kansas State football's summer workouts are on pause. In a release from the athletics department Saturday, K-State announced it has suspended the football program's voluntary workouts for the next 14 days as a result of this week's positive coronavirus results. As of Friday, K-State has confirmed 14 student-athletes have tested positive for COVID-19 since returning to campus this summer. K-State's football program started voluntary summer workouts Monday, the first day Big 12 teams were permitted to do so.

K-State is the second school to suspend summer workouts, following Houston, which did so June 12 after six symptomatic student-athletes, spread across various sports, tested positive. The updated total for K-State is an increase of six known positives; the athletics department announced Thursday eight student-athletes had tested positive. It also represents an increase in Riley County on the whole: The county now has has 103 positives, with 12 new since Wednesday. Of those, six of the new cases are the K-State student-athletes announced Saturday, a Manhattan city health official confirmed. - Manhattan Mercury
