Another year, another stunner. Much to the chagrin of No. 3-ranked and heavily favored Oklahoma, the Kansas State Wildcats found a way again. A year after handing OU its only regular-season loss in Manhattan, the Wildcats took their show on the road Saturday with the same result, rallying from a 21-point second-half deficit for a 38-35 victory at Memorial Stadium. Senior kicker Blake Lynch, who missed two field goal attempts in a season-opening 35-31 upset loss at home to Arkansas State just two weeks earlier, drilled a 50-yarder to give the Wildcats their only lead of the game with 4 minutes, 32 seconds left. The defense took it from there, getting two straight stops, including senior safety Jahron McPherson's interception to seal it with 34 seconds on the clock. Senior quarterback Skylar Thompson and true freshman running back Deuce Vaughn led the offensive effort in the second half as K-State scored the game's last 24 points. Defensively, the Wildcats gave up 517 yards total offense, but forced four turnovers and got a blocked punt from AJ Parker that set up Vaughn's game-tying 38-yard touchdown run with 8:17 to go. - Topeka Capital Journal

A Kansas State squad that lost its opener to Arkansas State two weeks ago, had its roster depleted by COVID-19, and entered its game against No. 3 Oklahoma as a four-touchdown underdog overcame it all to pull off one of the biggest stunners of the season. Skylar Thompson passed for 334 yards and ran for three touchdowns, and the Wildcats rallied from 21 points down to beat the third-ranked Sooners 38-35, a 50-yard field goal by Blake Lynch with 4:32 remaining providing the margin of victory. - AP College Football

SEP 27 WALTER CAMP NATIONAL FBS DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: JAHRON McPHERSON, KANSAS STATE, Senior, Defensive Back, Basehor, KS/Butler CC,...Along with his last minute game-clinching interception, Jahron McPherson record 11 tackles, one for a loss, and forced fumble as Kansas State came-from-behind to defeat third-ranked Oklahoma, 38-35. McPherson's interception ended Oklahoma's attempted go-ahead scoring drive with 33 seconds remaining and sealed the Wildcats' first victory of the season. Notes: Jahron McPherson is the fourth Kanas State player to earn the recognition since 2004, and the first since Nov 4, 2012 (Allen Chapman, DB). - The Walter Camp Football Foundation

Jahron McPherson, who picked off Rattler to clinch the win and also forced a fumble in the third quarter, said it was easy for the Wildcats to avoid feeling pressure as they mounted their comeback. "There's no panicking when you're down - you have nothing to lose," he said. "So as a leader, I really preached to my team that we were still in this...One thing about this team, we're not going to ever give up, so you cannot count us out." Knowing how few people believed in them - Oklahoma was a 27 1/2-point favorite entering the game - added a little extra motivation, too. And made the victory that much sweeter for K-State. "Being an underdog, you just have some fire in you when you want to prove something," McPherson said. "So I feel like us being an underdog, we always have something to prove, so I think that that's our biggest drive." - Manhattan Mercury

Skylar Thompson passed for 334 yards and ran for three touchdowns, and Kansas State rallied from 21 points down to beat No. 3 Oklahoma 38-35 on Saturday. Freshman Deuce Vaughn caught four passes for 129 yards and ran for a touchdown for the Wildcats, who were coming off a season-opening loss to Arkansas State. It was Kansas State's first-ever road win against a top-three team in the AP poll. Oklahoma freshman Spencer Rattler passed for 387 yards and four touchdowns, but he threw three interceptions. Kansas State upset Oklahoma 48-41 in Manhattan, Kansas, last year. Kansas State said earlier in the week it was struggling to have enough players available at all position groups to play the game because of COVID-19. - AP College Football

Chris Klieman makes it clear to his younger players as soon as they arrive at Kansas State that there are two traits - above even raw physical ability - that will get them on the field faster than anything. Running back Deuce Vaughn and quarterback Will Howard, plus three other true freshmen, got the call last Saturday in the Wildcats' season opener at Bill Snyder Family Stadium in large part because they showed in a short time that they fit the bill. "The main product of that, as we've seen, is Deuce. He had a great game, some explosive plays, and he has some things that you can't teach. For him to come in, game one, as a true freshman and do the things he did, it just shows how mature he is, and how much he's really bought in and how much film he watched during the week."

Vaughn said after the game that attention to detail definitely fast-tracked his climb up the depth chart to the No. 2 spot behind senior Harry Trotter. "Without a doubt, just diving into the playbook as soon as I got it," Vaughn said. "I signed my letter of intent around December and I ended up getting the playbook and my iPad and stuff in February, so just right then I took it day-by-day, chunk-by-chunk, just went through and looked at everything and didn't get ahead of myself. "I looked at all the installments they had in 2019 (preseason) camp, and I knew if I did that I would give myself a great opportunity to be able to play early." Vaughn's first career carry went for 12 yards, and he had a 24-yarder on the same drive, then finished it off with a 3-yard touchdown early in the second quarter to put K-State up 14-7. "It is honestly surreal," Vaughn said of the touchdown. "Last night I went to bed dreaming about scoring my first touchdown in Bill Snyder Family Stadium and playing for the Wildcats. - Topeka Capital Journal

  09/12/20 - *Deuce VaughnJr/2023, Kansas State, 5-05, 179 (DS#17 RB) + More +

Deuce Vaughn may not yet be a household name among Kansas State football fans, but he certainly has caught linebacker Justin Hughes' attention. So much so that when Hughes and Elijah Sullivan, the Wildcats' other starting linebacker, spot him in the offensive huddle during practice they immediately sound the alarm. "When we see him in the backfield, I know me and Elijah talk to each other and say 'Deuce, Deuce, Deuce,' " Hughes said of Vaughn, a shifty 5-foot-5, 168-pound true freshman running back from Round Rock, Texas. "We point him out every time he's on the field because we know he's getting the ball or they're setting him up to get the ball, so we just try to contain him and let the (defensive) ends know he's in so they can keep contain and keep him in the box."

Hughes is not the only one to take notice of Vaughn, who found himself sharing the No. 2 running back spot with senior Tyler Burns when K-State released its two-deep Monday ahead of Saturday's 11 a.m. season opener against Arkansas State at Bill Snyder Family Stadium. "He's got a great skill set," head coach Chris Klieman said Tuesday during his game week virtual news conference. "He can catch the ball extremely well (and) he's got great vision. "He can run inside, he can run outside, and we're excited about seeing what he can do, as well as a number of younger players." - Topeka Capital Journal

  09/09/20 - Harry TrotterSr/2021, Kansas State, 5-09, 207 (DS#58 RB) + More +

In the midst of challenges created by the coronavirus pandemic, Harry Trotter has had to get creative at times to stay healthy and maintain his workout routine. When many businesses - gyms among them - shut down earlier this year, Trotter resorted to using what was available. Hills. Sand pits. "Whatever you can find," he said, "to get some extra work in." Trotted acknowledged it wasn't always easy. Half the battle simply was making sure he didn't let the circumstances dictate his attitude. "It was difficult some days, but just staying positive, making the best (of it) and just trying to work as hard as you can all offseason is something I take a lot of pride on," he said. "Just trying to be as responsible as I can because, being a senior and with the position I'm in, I know I have to be responsible and held accountable for everything that I'm going to be taking part of."

All the time and energy he's put in since the end of last season boiled down to one reality: Trotter likely will be Kansas State's starting running back this fall. Last season, he was part of a three-man, upperclassmen rotation along with seniors (and graduate transfers) James Gilbert and Jordon Brown. Gilbert ended up becoming the primary option, leading the Wildcats' running backs in carries (141), rushing yards (737) and rushing touchdowns (six). Brown was next in line, with 380 yards and four scores on 84 attempts. Finally, there was Trotter, who ended last season with a line of 66 carries, 263 yards and three touchdowns. - Manhattan Mercury

  09/09/20 - Brock MontyrSr/2022, Kansas State, 6-2, 211 (DS#999 SS) + More +

When Kansas State announced its seven team captains for the 2020 football season last week, most of the names were easily recognizable to even the casual observer. Skylar Thompson, the fifth-year senior quarterback. (A "no-brainer," offensive coordinator Courtney Messingham said.) Justin Hughes and Elijah Sullivan, senior linebackers and heart and soul of the defense. Wyatt Hubert, the fourth-year junior defensive end who might be the Wildcats' best overall player. And Jahron McPherson, a fifth-year senior defensive back who's received as much praise about his progress as any player since the end of last season. The other names are lesser known: Noah Johnson and Brock Monty. A Wichita native, Johnson is tasked with replacing long-time starter Adam Holtorf as K-State's center. Monty, another senior from Wichita, has been a special teams ace the past three seasons, but figures to see more time in the playing rotation at strong safety this fall. - Manhattan Mercury

A year ago, Thompson was still adjusting to the fact that this was now his team. He started as a sophomore, but was locked in a constant battle with backup Alex Delton, who later transferred to TCU. Thompson blossomed into the unquestioned leader on offense and the entire team, which was vital during the COVID-19 shutdown. He also was an effective leader on the field, where he completed nearly 60% of his passes for 2,315 yards and 12 touchdowns with just five interceptions while ranking second on the team in rushing with 405 yards and 11 scores. His composure could be tested early, with a rebuilt offensive line and the loss of the two leading running backs from a year ago. But having a veteran quarterback who begins his third year as a starter and second season in Courtney Messingham's offense clearly is an advantage. "I think it's a huge deal, not just for myself, but for our offense," Messingham said. - Topeka Capital Journal
