James Madison defensive lineman Jamare Edwards was on the sideline during the Dukes' spring camp, but his impact on the defensive side of the ball won't be absent for long. When Edwards returns to the field with the Dukes for fall camp, his 6-foot-3, 281-pound frame will not be hard to miss. The Miami, Fla., native transferred to JMU from Marshall this past January, just days before the spring semester started. While with Marshall, Edwards was a force on the defensive front. In his five seasons there, Edwards made 34 appearances with 15 starts, racking up 87 tackles, six sacks and 17 quarterback hurries.

This season, he'll get a chance to square off with his former team as the Thundering Herd will make their way to Harrisonburg in October. Marshall head coach Charles Huff said he's excited to see Edwards in the Sun Belt this season and is rooting for him, except in the game against the Thundering Herd. "Jamare's an athletic specimen for his size," Huff said. "He's got really good agility. He moves well for a defensive lineman, knows the game...He did a really good job for us." In Huff's first season at Marshall, Edwards played in 10 games, logging 29 total tackles with 4.5 tackles for a loss and 1.5 sacks. - Daily News-Record

The Crusaders (10-3, 6-0 PL) garnered 71 points and 11 first-place votes as they attempt to claim a Patriot League record fourth-straight League crown under defending coach of the year Bob Chesney. Fordham (6-5, 4-2 PL) was picked second in the preseason poll with 61 points and two first-place votes. Colgate (5-6, 5-1 PL) enters the 2022 season as the third-ranked team in the League with 50 points and one first-place vote.   On Friday, James Madison will become an official member of the Sun Belt Conference. The Dukes will now be covered by ESPN+. JMU Director of Athletics Jeff Bourne said the transition to the Sun Belt would provide the opportunity for JMU student-athletes to gain increased exposure on a national stage. "The conference is a phenomenal landing spot for JMU," emphasized Bourne. "This is a day we've been looking forward to for a long time." The Dukes have a long history of standout female athletes, and Bourne said he expects women's sports to thrive in the Sun Belt and beyond. "In the next five to ten years, we're going to see women's sports occupy a greater part of the scene," he added. "We're excited about the opportunity to promote this growth because we've had so many successful women's programs at JMU." - WHSV.com

When EA Sports' newest NCAA College Football video game releases, Bridgeforth Stadium is going to look and sound realistic. With a targeted release date of next summer, according to Matt Brown of the Extra Points newsletter, the video game developer has been collecting audio and video assets from schools to use in the latest edition of the game, including James Madison. JMU sent five songs to EA Sports; the fight song, "Get It On," "Start Wearing Purple," "All We Do Is Win," and the JMU Alma Mater, according to Kevin Warner, JMU associate athletic director for communications. "To EA Sports' credit, they're working very hard to capture the specific game day feel of each venue," Warner said. The Dukes also sent a few video board and public address announcing prompts for the game, including one for first downs, the "J-M-U Dukes" cheer and the AC/DC song Hells Bells for third downs. - Daily News-Record

North Texas made it official on Wednesday. UNT was announced as one of six schools that would be included in the American Athletic Conference's latest round of expansion back in October. A source confirmed last week that the Mean Green would make the move in the summer of 2023. The final step came when the school made its official announcement this afternoon. "UNT has gained tremendous momentum the last two years and this forthcoming transition to The American is another stellar example highlighting our progress," UNT President Neal Smatresk said in a press release. "Our university community is looking forward to working with our new colleagues in The American and to all the great things still to come for our athletics department and our university." The Mean Green will join the league on July 1, 2023, ending their tenure in Conference USA that began in 2013. - Denton Record

Adeyi came out of nowhere to be one of UNT's most productive running backs last season. The former Mansfield Legacy standout transferred in from Division II Harding ahead of last season and quickly worked his way into UNT's plans. He rolled up 496 rushing yards and six touchdowns, making him UNT's third leading rusher in a deep and talented backfield. Adeyi rushed for 99 yards in a loss to Liberty. He scored two touchdowns in UNT's win over Rice, including the game-winner on a 1-yard plunge in overtime. - Denton Record

  05/07/22 - Nehki MeredithrJr/2026, James Madison, 5-09, 177 (DS#999 CB) + More +

Just after Nehki Meredith announced his commitment to James Madison on Wednesday evening, he was playing basketball at the Dukes' student university rec center. The NC State transfer defensive back was quickly taken in by the Dukes' players when he arrived for a visit earlier in the day and he already knew a few of them from the Hampton Roads area. He wasn't the only Power 5 defensive back to announce his decision to transfer to JMU on Wednesday, joined by Michigan State corner Antoine Booth as the Dukes continue to boost their secondary with FBS transfers.

Meredith, who played at Bishop Sullivan Catholic High School, was teammates with Dukes' cornerback John Ransom and played against running backs Latrele Palmer and Kaelon Black during their prep years. The Virginia Beach native was also on the same youth basketball team as Dukes' linebacker Taurus Jones, so JMU felt like home. - Daily News-Record

  04/30/22 - Troy LewisrSr/2026, James Madison, 6-2, 202 (DS#999 WR) + More +

During James Madison's spring camp, head coach Curt Cignetti said the James Madison Dukes might look for a wide receiver in the transfer portal. The Dukes were thin at the position at times during spring practices and were in the market to add depth. Less than a week after the team wrapped up its spring camp, James Madison coach Curt Cignetti gained a commitment from East Carolina transfer wide receiver Troy Lewis. Lewis is the third FBS transfer the Dukes have gained a commitment from this spring, joining Rutgers defensive lineman Jamree Kromah and Liberty offensive lineman Andrew Adair.

For Lewis, a Richmond native, the opportunity to play at JMU was one he couldn't pass up. When he entered the portal, he said his goal was to end up in Harrisonburg. Soon after, wide receivers coach and offensive coordinator Mike Shanahan reached out. The former three-star recruit out of Matoaca High School said he heard from a number of schools during his 10 days in the transfer portal, but the Dukes were at the top of his list. - Daily News

  04/26/22 - Todd CenteiorSr/2023, James Madison, 5-11, 226 (DS#31 QB) + More +

It's no secret that JMU is in the middle of a three-way quarterback competition between graduate student and Colorado State transfer Todd Centeio, redshirt freshman Billy Atkins and true freshman Alonza Barnett III. Cignetti has liked what he's seen out of each quarterback at times this spring, but isn't going to rush naming the starting signal-caller. "I think it's a three-way quarterback battle. It's definitely going to go into the fall," Cignetti said. "There will not be a decision this spring, that's for sure." Throughout the spring, Cignetti has said that he's looking for clear separation between the quarterbacks to name a starter. So far, none of the quarterbacks have pulled away from the others at this point in practice.

Centeio and Atkins have split first-team reps evenly this spring, alternating days with the starting group, except for last Saturday, when Barnett earned first-team reps. In that case, Centeio and Atkins worked with the second and third teams during the open part of practice. Centeio is the only quarterback on the roster with significant playing time, starting at both Colorado State and Temple in past seasons. Last season with the Rams, Centeio threw for almost 3,000 yards and 12 touchdowns, adding a pair of scores on the ground. - Daily News-Record

  04/24/22 - Dylan MorrisrSr/2025, James Madison, 6-0, 202 (DS#34 QB) + More +

Dylan Morris knows the difference. Last fall, the 6-foot, 202-pound quarterback was the unfortunate face of an offensive implosion - and thus, an easy target. He completed 60.6% of his passes and threw for 2,458 yards with 14 passing touchdowns and three rushing scores. He also threw more interceptions (12) than any other quarterback in the Pac-12 Conference. In an equally unforeseen and unacceptable 4-8 season, Morris was handed the reins to a helplessly archaic offense - and both he and the Huskies struggled. The sophomore passer from Puyallup said Wednesday, following Washington's 10th practice of the spring, it was "most definitely" the most difficult season of his career.

And as Morris sputtered, the social media masses stewed. The former Graham-Kapowsin quarterback and four-star recruit received ridicule from an enthusiastically vocal faction of the Husky fan base, while Sam Huard - a five-star freshman and perceived savior - waited teasingly in the wings. Morris, of course, understands the spotlight that accompanies his specific position. But he won't stare at the sun. "I was off social media all through the season and still am. It's not a real place," he said. "People can say what they want, but it's not a real place. Ninety-nine percent of those people are not going to say anything in person. Honestly, it's more amusing to me when somebody says something (online), because we're out here doing this, and where are they at? "But I just stayed off social media. With that stuff, like I said, it's not a real place. What they say doesn't affect what I can do on the field." - Seattle Times
