USC running back Kenan Christon's university suspension following a September altercation with a fellow student has been reduced on appeal, activist Najee Ali confirmed on Tuesday. Christon will now be allowed to return to campus on May 12 and resume his academic career at that time. His original suspension would have kept him away from campus until December of 2022. The junior running back has been removed from team activities for both football and track since the September altercation as the university went about its investigation and judicial process. He missed the entire 2021 football season following the incident. Though it remains unclear if or when Christon will rejoin the football team, Tuesday's decision keeps open the possibility that he could play for USC in 2022. Later Tuesday night, Yahoo! Sports reported that Christon had entered his name into the transfer portal, though he could still choose to remove his name and return to USC if given the opportunity to play again. - Orange County Register

Isaiah Bolden returned a kick-off 91 yards and James Houston IV picked off a pass in the backfield and returned it five yards for a score as Jackson State broke open a tight game in the third quarter to beat Prairie View A&M 27-10, and win its first Southwestern Athletic Conference championship in 13 years Saturday. The Tigers (11-1) also wrapped up the school's first 11-win season. Jackson State's defense forced four turnovers from Prairie View quarterback Jawon Pass, picking off three passes and forcing a third-quarter fumble. The graduate transfer from Louisville, who threw for just shy of 2,000 yards, was held to just 6 of 19 for 80 yards. Prairie View scored first. Ty Holden took a pitch from Pass, pulled up and lobbed a pass to a wide-open Jailon Howard for a 35-yard touchdown with 3:25 left in the first quarter.

Jackson State answered with a six-play, 65-yard drive capped by a 16-yard pass to Malachi Wideman from Shedeur Sanders, the SWAC Freshman of the Year and son of coach Deion Sanders. Luis Reyes put the Panthers on top with a 37-yard field goal in the second quarter, but Prairie View did not score again. Bolden took the following kick-off, found a seam and raced 91-yards for the go-ahead touchdown and a 13-10 halftime lead. The Tigers forced a Pass fumble on Prairie View's first possession of the second half, and with the Panthers deep in their own territory, Houston penetrated into the backfield, tipping a swing pass, snatching it out of the air and returning it five yards for a touchdown midway through the third quarter. Jackson State put a bow on its SWAC title with 48-yard drive late in the third quarter capped by a five-yard run from Peytton Pickett, who finished with 107 rushing yards on 19 carries. With the SWAC title comes a berth in the 2021 Celebration Bowl in Atlanta Dec. 18. The Tigers will face Mid-Eastern Conference champion South Carolina State (6-5). - Jackson State/AP College Football

Tennessee football wide receiver Malachi Wideman announced he was entering the transfer portal Thursday. He only spent one season with the Vols and will have four years of eligibility remaining. A former four-star recruit, Wideman made his announcement in a Twitter post citing his intention to a go to a school where he could showcase his talent on the basketball court as well as the football field. "I am embarking on a future that will allow me to showcase my God-given talents on a solid platform in basketball and football," Wideman wrote. "I will always have love for Tennessee and my fellow teammates, but at this time, God has compelled me to choose another path. I have entered the transfer portal." Wideman's decision comes a week after reports surfaced that he was no longer with the program.   USC wants to move away from the running back-by-committee approach it's used the last three seasons. The goal is for one main back and a change-of-pace option to take on the lion's share of carries. With just two jobs on the line, that makes running back the most crowded competition at USC. Texas transfer Keaontay Ingram was the best back throughout the spring, breaking tackles and bursting through holes. If he's the physical work horse (which is still TBD until after fall camp), how does USC complement him? Vavae Malepeai plays with a similar style to Ingram, but has been USC's starting running back the last two seasons when healthy. Stephen Carr is more of a contrast with Ingram, with speed being his primary weapon. Kenan Christon is the most dynamic option, with his combination of speed and ability to make plays in the passing game, but he missed spring competing with the USC track and field team and faces an uphill battle. - Orange County Register
