He had back-to-back sacks in a key fourth-quarter possession to help hold off a Cowboys comeback. McDonald also had a pass breakup and two QB hurries. He now has 25.0 sacks, one shy from the school record. - Big 12 Football

  10/24/21 - Brock PurdySr/2022, Iowa State, 6-1, 212 (DS#11 QB) + More +

Brock Purdy threw for 307 yards and two touchdowns and the Iowa State defense made a late stand in the closing minutes as the Cyclones knocked off No. 8 Oklahoma State 24-21 on Saturday. Breece Hall scored the go-ahead touchdown with 5:29 left, then the Cyclones' defense forced a three-and-out and stopped the Cowboys on fourth down with 1:09 left. Purdy kneeled twice in victory formation, and fans stormed the field at Jack Trice Stadium as the clock ran out to celebrate Iowa State's first win over a top-10 opponent since 2018. "It was super fun," Cyclones receiver Xavier Hutchinson said of the postgame scene. "It wasn't necessarily why you play the game, but it was (one of) the pros to playing the game." It was the seventh straight Oklahoma State-Iowa State game decided by seven points or less.

Purdy completed 27 of 33 passes, and Hutchinson had a career-best 12 passes for 125 yards and two touchdowns for the Cyclones (5-2, 3-1 Big 12). "I'm just so happy for our team," Purdy said. "It felt good to finish it the right way." Spencer Sanders went 15 for 24 passing for Oklahoma State (6-1, 3-1), finishing with 225 yards and three touchdowns. Iowa State led 17-14 in the fourth quarter and was driving to extended its lead until Malcolm Rodriguez and Jarrick Bernard-Converse stuffed Purdy on a fourth-and-2 run at the Cowboys' 42. Four plays later, Tay Martin caught a 25-yard touchdown pass to put the Cowboys up 21-17. Purdy then led the Cyclones on an 85-yard drive that Hall finished with his short TD run. Hall extended to 19 his Big 12 record for consecutive games with a rushing touchdown. "The character of this game is what we've talked about," Iowa State coach Matt Campbell said. "It's not always going to be pretty. It's not always going to be easy." - Iowa State/AP College Football

BIG 12 SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Andrew Mevis, Iowa State, K, Sr.,...Mevis scored 14 of Iowa State's points in a 33-20 win over Kansas State. He was perfect on all his field goal attempts, going 4-of-4 to become the first Cyclone to make four in a game since Connor Assalley in 2018. All of Mevis' FGs were 40 yards or longer, connecting on 44, 41, 41 and 40 yards. The senior made a 41-yarder as time expired in the first half to give the Cyclones a 20-7 lead. - Big 12 Football

  10/17/21 - *Breece HallJr/2022, Iowa State, 5-11, 218 (DS#1 RB) + More +

Breece Hall rushed for 197 yards and two touchdowns and Brock Purdy was an efficient 22-of-25 for 208 yards and a score as Iowa State downed Kansas State 33-20 Saturday night. The Cyclones gained 210 yards on the ground and 208 yards through the air. "It always starts with (balance) for us," Iowa State coach Matt Campbell said, "the ability to create a running game somehow, someway, and the ability to use our passing game to open up the running game. "So much credit goes to our quarterback tonight. The way he played with poise, I really thought he did a phenomenal job of distributing the football." The Wildcats had won 15 of the last 16 games in Manhattan. The teams split the last four meetings in the series, with each team winning two home games. Prior to that, K-State had won 10 straight games in the series.

K-State quarterback Skylar Thompson was 15-of-23 for 206 yards and two touchdowns and one interception. Hall has now rushed for a touchdown in 18 straight games, a Big 12 record and the fifth longest streak in FBS since 1996. Hall rushed 75 yards for a touchdown on the opening play of the game, finding a hole on the right side of the offensive line and racing untouched until the 10-yard line, where he eluded a defender diving for his feet. "It was blocked perfectly," Hall said. "I didn't really have to do much but find a hole and run. I knew it was going to be a big run, because the crowd was real loud but it got quiet suddenly. I knew I would score the touchdown." - Iowa State/AP College Football

  10/03/21 - Brock PurdySr/2022, Iowa State, 6-1, 212 (DS#11 QB) + More +

Brock Purdy threw four touchdown passes in the first quarter as Iowa State rolled past Big 12 Conference rival Kansas 59-7 on Saturday night. The 28 points was the most ever scored by the Cyclones in an opening period, helping coach Matt Campbell's team improve its record to 3-2 overall and 1-1 in the Big 12. And it was the most total points Iowa State has scored in its long-running series with the Jayhawks. Kansas (1-4, 0-2) has not won a conference road game since beating Iowa State 35-33 on Oct. 4, 2008, a string of 55 straight defeats.

Purdy finished 17 of 22 passing for 245 yards, with no interceptions. He now owns a 13-1 home record against Big 12 opponents. Breece Hall added 123 rushing yards on 17 carries and scored two touchdowns. Hall has scored a touchdown in 17 consecutive games, the nation's longest-active streak. Purdy completed his first six attempts, throwing touchdowns to four different receivers. The first came on a 36-yard strike to Xavier Hutchinson. Charlie Kolar caught a 6-yard scoring toss while Joe Scates and Jirehl Brock caught touchdown passes of 44 and 7 yards. Hutchinson finished with seven receptions for 96 yards. - Iowa State/AP College Football

  09/19/21 - Brock PurdySr/2022, Iowa State, 6-1, 212 (DS#11 QB) + More +

After two lackluster offensive performances in its first two games, No. 14 Iowa State flew into Las Vegas with a sense of urgency. The Cyclones are flying back to Ames, Iowa, with some pep back in their step. Brock Purdy completed 21 of 24 pass attempts for 288 yards and three touchdowns to lead No. 14 Iowa State over UNLV 48-3 Saturday night. Purdy, who also rushed for 33 yards, finished with a 229.6 quarterback rating, the third-highest of his career.

It was a major turnaround for Purdy from last week when he was benched during a 27-13 loss to in-state rival Iowa after completing 13 of 27 passes, throwing three interceptions and turning in a career-low 68.9 passer rating. "Coming off last week it was rough, just the way we played, our mindset and everything," Purdy said. "My mindset, big game last week, it hurt. There was no joy, no excitement, no sense of urgency. "Just to get on the road, get away, come out here and just play football with the guys was our main mission and goal. Still some stuff we've got to clean up, but it was a good confidence booster, for sure." Iowa State (2-1) finished with 486 yards of offense and 7.59 yards per play, scoring on eight of its 11 possessions, including six touchdowns. Breece Hall, who rushed for 69 yards in each of Iowa State's first two games, rushed for 70 of his 101 yards in the first quarter to lead the Cyclones' rushing attack. Hall scored two touchdowns. - Iowa State/AP College Football

The most experienced quarterbacks in the Big 12 have already been sidelined this season for very different reasons. Skylar Thompson was off to good start in his sixth year in Kansas State's program before a knee injury that will keep him out indefinitely. Fourth-year Iowa State starter Brock Purdy was benched in the fourth quarter of the biggest home game in program history, though coach Matt Campbell has since reiterated his "great trust" in the quarterback. First-year Texas coach Steve Sarkisian is already shuffling starters, replacing inconsistent redshirt freshman Hudson Card with junior Casey Thompson. All of that is through only two games this season and the unexpected changes at the game's most important position stretch beyond the Big 12. - AP College Football

It's official: Iowa State will start the season as a top-10 football team. The Cyclones are slotted at No. 8 in The USA TODAY Sports AFCA preseason college poll, it was announced Tuesday. It marks the first time in program history that Iowa State will open the season in the top-10 and is yet another sign that the year will be the most anticipated ever for the program. USA TODAY began administering the poll in 1991. The Cyclones are coming off their best season after going 9-3 with their first conference championship game appearance and victory in a New Year's Six bowl with a win over Oregon in the Fiesta Bowl. Nearly the entire roster returns for sixth-year coach Matt Campbell, who has emerged as one of the sport's rising young coaches as he's brought Iowa State from the cellar of the Big 12 to the national stage. - Ames Tribune

  07/09/21 - Mike RoseSr/2022, Iowa State, 6-4, 243 (DS#16 OLB) + More +

Eight of Matt Campbell's players were selected to the media's all-Big 12 preseason football team, but that's just part of it. All-American tight end Charlie Kolar was the Big 12's only unanimous preseason selection, and offensive guard Trevor Downing made the team despite missing the final 11 games due to a lower leg injury. Another bit of respect was that linebacker Mike Rose was picked to be the preseason defensive player of the year.

They're among the reasons the Cyclones are likely to be a top 10 team nationally heading into the Sept. 4 opener against Northern Iowa. They're also a reason Iowa State will be favored to face Oklahoma again in the Big 12's championship football game. Offensively, 1,000-yard rusher Breece Hall made the team, as did receiver Xavier Hutchinson, Kolar, Downing and center Colin Newell. The defensive selections were end Will McDonald, Rose and safety Greg Eisworth. Rose, who has started all 38 games during his career, led NCAA linebackers nationally with five interceptions, the most by a Cyclone linebacker in school history. - Des Moines Register

An Iowa State-Oklahoma Big 12 Conference championship game rematch? Don't bet against it. Matt Campbell's Cyclones were picked to finish second in preseason balloting by the media. Who was picked first? Oklahoma, which beat Iowa State 27-21 in the 2020 championship game. That's been the anticipated pick since so many Cyclones opted to return for 2021. "We've proven a whole lot, to be honest," Campbell told reporters during spring practice. "We are outcome-aware, but our purpose and our process and our ability to become better in our process - I think it's exciting that there's young men that want to do that, even at this age." Eight Cyclones were selected to the media's all-Big 12 preseason football team Wednesday, including All-American tight end Charlie Kolar being the only unanimous selection.   Of the 11 receivers on scholarship, seven are still technically freshmen, thanks in part to the NCAA not counting the 2020 season towards eligibility. All three walk-ons are freshmen, as well. There's not a single senior in the group. "The veteran guy is probably Dimitri Stanley, who's played a significant amount of college football," Chiaverini said. "Besides that, everybody else is really, really young, as far as their snaps in college football." Led by Stanley, a sophomore, and third-year freshman La'Vontae Shenault, it is a group that could be exciting to watch. Stanley, a Cherry Creek High School graduate, is entering his fourth year with the program. Counting the Alamo Bowl, he led the Buffs in receptions (20) and receiving yards (335) last season. He's had 55 catches in his career and has also handled the Buffs' punt return duties. - Daily Camera

If you want Iowa State's Heisman hopeful or the best quarterback in program history to wish a loved one a happy birthday or congratulate a friend on a promotion, all you need is $40. Breece Hall, the Cyclones' All-American running back, and Brock Purdy, the program's winningest QB, have joined Cameo, the personalized video service featuring celebrities, on the first day that NCAA athletes are permitted to profit from their own name, image and likeness. "Whether it's for birthday parties, motivation or just words of advice," Hall said in his introductory video on the service, "I can't wait to be on this app and connect with you guys and get to know you guys." Cameo has become increasingly popular among athletes and entertainers in recent years. It allows fans to request a personalized message that the celebrity delivers on the app for a price. - Des Moines Register

The Pacific Club IMPACT Foundation, sponsors of the annual Lott IMPACT Trophy, has announced the 42 players on the 2021 Watch List. College defensive players are nominated to the Watch List based on the IMPACT on their teams on and off the field. IMPACT is an acronym for Integrity, Maturity, Performance, Academics, Community and Tenacity. The 42 represents Ronnie Lott's number during his legendary career. The Watch List was announced at a luncheon at The Pacific Club in Newport Beach June 15. Former NFL MVP and Hall of Famer Kurt Warner was the special guest speaker at the luncheon. The winner of the Lott Trophy, which will be announced in December, will receive $25,000 for his university's general scholarship fund. This is the 18th year for the Lott Trophy, which has donated more than $1.6 million to schools and other charities around the country. - Lott IMPACT Trophy

  05/04/21 - Kene NwangwurSr/2021, Iowa State, 6-0, 210 (DS#30 RB) + More +

One of the most unselfish football players during Iowa State's rise toward school history last season is headed to the NFL. Kene Nwangwu, the Cyclones' ultra-valuable skill-position backup and premier kickoff returner, was selected by the Minnesota Vikings in the fourth round of the draft Saturday. He projects as a special teams player, primarily a kickoff returner, where he was 11th nationally last season with an average of 28.9 yards per return. "Kene was among a unique group of seniors who were really special," Iowa State coach Matt Campbell said in a statement Saturday. "Kene has been through so much here at Iowa State. He had a great start to his career, and then he tears his Achilles. It was a long tough road back for him, and it wasn't easy. "To watch his leadership grow, see what he has done for our football program, and (Saturday), to see him get drafted, I am so thrilled for him." He's not the only Cyclones representation in NFL camps - tight end Dylan Soehner as a New Orleans free agent, receiver Landen Akers as a Rams free agent, record-setting defensive end JaQuan Bailey likewise with Philadelphia, and defensive back Lawrence White in Tampa's camp. - Ames Tribune
