Sophomore Brock Purdy threw for a career-high 435 yards and tied a school record with six touchdowns and Iowa State throttled Louisiana-Monroe 72-20 on Saturday. Purdy tossed three touchdown passes and ran for 75 yards and three TDs for the Cyclones (2-1), becoming the first player in school history to surpass 500 yards of total offense. Iowa State finished with a school-best 714 yards, breaking a record it set in 1949.

Purdy pushed a 14-point halftime lead to 48-20 with three touchdowns in the third quarter. Purdy ran it in from 13 yards out, found Deshaunte Jones for an 84-yard TD connection and hit Sean Shaw from 12 yards out to make it a 28-point game with 19 seconds left before the third quarter. Tarique Milton had 142 yards receiving for the Cyclones, and Jones had 100 on just two grabs. Caleb Evans threw for 176 yards and two TDs and ran for 93 yards for ULM (1-2). - Iowa State/AP College Football

Iowa State quarterback Brock Purdy's eyes lit up when he saw a potential game-losing fumble floating aimlessly near the goal line. The sophomore sprang into action, snapping up Sheldon Croney Jr.'s triple-overtime miscue and saving the Cyclones from a devastating defeat - even by their standards. Croney Jr. scored from a yard out on the next play and 21st-ranked Iowa State rallied to edge past FCS school Northern Iowa 29-26 on Saturday. La'Michael Pettway had a pair of touchdown catches for the Cyclones (1-0), who barely survived a massive upset after entering the year ranked for the first time since 1978.

Croney fumbled just shy of the end zone on the second-to-last play of the game. But Purdy saw the ball bounce out, and he sprinted from the backfield to recover it at the 1 in perhaps the biggest play of his impressive young career. "I saw who was underneath the pile, so I knew who would come up with it. Doesn't that tell you what he is about?" Iowa State coach Matt Campbell said about Purdy's heads-up play. "When I saw him there I thought we were going to be in great shape." - AP College Football

  08/02/19 - Ray LimarSr/2020, Iowa State, 6-3, 316 (DS#34 DT) + More +

Ray Lima was plugged into the heart of the defensive line two years ago, and hasn't stopped making an impact since. His numbers won't reflect that of an All-American from the Clemsons or Alabamas, but his impact, on and off the field, has been undeniable to his head coach. "He's the entire reason the culture of the football program has turned," coach Matt Campbell said during his media day news conference.

"Who he is, what he is, what he stands for, you won't know because you can interview him and he won't tell you. But I can tell you this: He's the reason this football program and the culture of this program has turned. "He's a guy that I think has made me a better person, has taught me the right way to lead." "Humility is the first word that comes to the table," Campbell said. "You'll go interview Ray and Ray won't tell you anything. I know Ray and you know Ray and that's how it's going to be. "His humility, his character, his ability to serve others is really powerful and I think that's hard to find in our society today and I think Ray is defining of that." - Ames Tribune

Iowa State lost star wide receiver Hakeem Butler to the NFL a year earlier than expected. Graduate transfer La'Michael Pettway joined the Cyclones in hopes of joining Butler in the pros in 2020. The 6-foot-3 Pettway led Arkansas in catches a season ago, and he will be counted on to help replace the 1,318 yards and nine touchdowns piled up by Butler last year. For Pettway, it's an opportunity that he hopes will get him on the radar of NFL scouts — assuming he earns a starting job as expected Iowa State (8-5 in 2018) opens the season Aug. 31 against Northern Iowa. "He's strong. He's fast. He can do a lot of things from the slot and the outside," sophomore quarterback Brock Purdy said. "We're excited to have him here." - AP College Football
