2019 PATRICK MANNELLY AWARD FINALIST: Steven Wirtel, Iowa State,...A native of Orland Park, Ill., Wirtel has been a model of consistency in his four years as Cyclone. He took over long snapping duties as a true freshman in 2016 and has graded out annually as one of the best. Wirtel has played in all 49 games the last four seasons, taking care of deep snaps on punts in 2016 and 2017. He added snaps for field goals and PATs beginning in 2018. The senior has been perfect throughout his whole career. "I told people at the beginning of the season that the most important piece of the puzzle on special teams is Steve Wirtel," Iowa State head coach Matt Campbell said.   12/03/19 - Brock PurdySr/2022, Iowa State, 6-1, 212 (DS#11 QB) + More +

Iowa State and coach Matt Campbell have agreed on a one-year contract extension through 2025. The Cyclones announced Tuesday that Campbell has been locked up for the next six seasons, ending speculation he would be a candidate for any number of job openings. Terms were not disclosed. Iowa State, picked third in the Big 12 preseason poll, finished the regular season at 7-5 -- though three of those losses came to ranked opponents by just four combined points. "I greatly appreciate Dr. (Wendy) Wintersteen's and (Iowa State athletic director) Jamie's (Pollard) proactive approach to extending my contract," Campbell said.

"My staff and I will be on the road this week actively recruiting the next class of Cyclones and it is important for recruits and their families to understand my commitment to Iowa State." Iowa State and Campbell agreed to a six-year, $22.5 million contract in 2017 and extended that deal by a year last December. Campbell has led the Cyclones to three straight winning seasons for the first time in over four decades, prompting rumors that he might be poised to leave Ames for a more prestigious program. The speculation could potentially hurt recruiting, with the first signing day of this cycle coming in two weeks. - AP College Football

Brock Purdy threw for 372 yards and four TDs and Iowa State rallied to beat Kansas 41-31 on Saturday and clinch its third straight winning season. La'Michael Pettway had 96 yards receiving and two touchdowns for the Cyclones (7-4, 5-3 Big 12), who've now complied three consecutive winning years just twice in the modern era. Iowa State, under coach Earle Bruce, won eight games each in 1976, 1977 and 1978 before Bruce bolted for Ohio State. But the Cyclones nearly blew it against the league's last-place team as a 24-point favorite.

Kansas (3-8, 1-7) scored two touchdowns in just 77 seconds late in the third quarter, the second coming after Purdy threw an interception, to jump ahead 24-21. Purdy responded with a 24-yard TD pass to Hall and a five-yard touchdown run with 5:10 left to put Iowa State back on top 34-31. After stopping Kansas on fourth down at the Iowa State 37, Purdy found Sean Shaw on 4th and goal from the four to seal the win with 1:09 to go. Carter Stanley threw for 328 yards and three TDs for Kansas, and Pooka Williams ran for 154 yards. - Iowa State/AP College Football

Connor Assalley kicked a 36-yard field goal as time expired and Iowa State knocked off 22nd-ranked Texas 23-21 on Saturday to snap a two-game losing streak. Brock Purdy had 354 yards passing and two TDs for the Cyclones (6-4, 4-3 Big 12). They beat the Longhorns (6-4, 4-3) for just the third time in 17 tries despite blowing a 13-point lead. Brayden Narveson missed an apparent 42-yard field goal with 2:12 to go, but Texas was called for being offside and Iowa State was awarded a first down by inches.

The Cyclones - who have lost twice by a point in 2019 -- elected to play for the field goal. Assalley rewarded coach Matt Campbell's faith in him by knocking the winner down the middle. Sam Ehlinger gave Texas a 21-20 lead with a brilliant 7-yard TD pass to Malcom Epps on fourth down with 5:37 to go. But the Cyclones stuffed the Longhorns on their next possession, and Purdy took Iowa State 63 yards in three minutes to set up Assalley's kick. Ehlinger had 273 yards and three TDs for Texas, losers of three of its last five. - AP College Football

  10/19/19 - Brock PurdySr/2022, Iowa State, 6-1, 212 (DS#11 QB) + More +

Brock Purdy and the Iowa State Cyclones have been on quite a roll since late in the game that got away in their other trip to Texas. Purdy threw for 378 yards and three touchdowns, freshman Breece Hall ran 75 yards for the first of his two scores and Iowa State took a big lead early in a 34-24 victory against Texas Tech on Saturday. Purdy had 277 yards and all three of his scoring tosses for a 20-0 lead early in the second quarter, with two TDs to tight end Charlie Kolar, as the Cyclones (5-2, 3-1 Big 12) won their third straight game since losing at Baylor.

Iowa State was down 20-0 in that trip to Waco when Purdy engineered three fourth-quarter touchdowns for a one-point lead before the Bears drove to a field goal and a 23-21 win. The Cyclones responded with comfortable wins over TCU (49-24) and West Virginia (38-14). "We lost our way a little bit in terms of the joy of playing football early in the season," coach Matt Campbell said. "Somewhere along down 20-0 in Waco, we found our joy of playing football again. We'll have to keep plugging away, and that's hard." The Red Raiders (3-4, 1-3) extended their longest losing streak in the series with Iowa State to four, dropping their second in a row this season since beating Oklahoma State for the best victory so far under first-year coach Matt Wells. Purdy was 15 of 17 and had the ball again in the second quarter with the 20-point lead when he threw three straight incompletions. The Red Raiders answered with a 6-yard TD run by SoRodorick Thompson, who scored twice. - Iowa State/AP College Football

Freshman Breece Hall rushed for 132 yards and scored three touchdowns to lead Iowa State to a 38-14 victory over West Virginia on Saturday night. Brock Purdy threw for one TD and ran for another for the Cyclones (4-2, 2-1 Big 12), who held the Mountaineers (3-3, 1-2) scoreless in the second half. West Virginia quarterback Austin Kendall was hit hard while attempting a pass during the Mountaineers' first series. He did not return and was replaced by backup Jack Allison.

Hall scored on a pair of 1-yard runs and also had a 12-yard TD. He might have given the Cyclones the dependable option at running back they'd been looking for ever since star David Montgomery departed. Hall entered the game fifth on the team with 84 rushing yards on 18 carries. The 205-pound Hall is the third different running back to lead the Cyclones in rushing this season and the first to eclipse 100 yards. Purdy had 102 yards a week ago against TCU. Johnnie Lang started Saturday's game and had four carries for 11 yards before giving way to Hall. - Iowa State/AP College Football

Brock Purdy threw for 247 yards and a pair of TDs and Iowa State overwhelmed TCU 49-24 on Saturday for its first Big 12 win of the season. Purdy also ran for 102 yards and two touchdowns for the Cyclones (3-2, 1-1), who beat the Horned Frogs for just the third time in 11 tries. TCU (3-2, 1-1), down 35-10 after three quarters, got a touchdown run from Darius Anderson and a 22-yard TD grab by Jalen Reagor to make it a 35-24 game with nine minutes left. But Purdy's fourth TD of the day, a 9-yard run, put the Cyclones ahead by 18 with 6:27 left. Purdy finished with at least 300 combined yards for the fourth straight game.

Eyioma Uwazurike's 1-yard scoop and score on a fumble put the Cyclones ahead 14-3 early in the second quarter. Purdy then made it 21-3 on a 25-yard touchdown pass to Charlie Kolar, and his 10-yard TD run put Iowa State up 28-3 early in the third quarter. Freshman Max Duggan got TCU within 28-10 on a short TD pass to Reagor. Iowa State answered by going 75 yards in just five plays, and Johnnie Lang's 3-yard touchdown run pushed the Cyclones back ahead by 25. Duggan was 17 of 25 passing for 219 yards and two TDs for TCU. But Anderson ran for just 49 yards, snapping his streak of 100-yard games at three. - Iowa State/AP College Football
