  05/25/20 - Brock PurdySr/2022, Iowa State, 6-1, 212 (DS#11 QB) + More +

Football is about wins, and Purdy needs eight as a starter to become the school's winningest quarterback. When that happens, he'll be at the summit of Iowa State's quarterback Mount Rushmore. Statistics are just one form of measuring. Winning is the ultimate. In this case, Purdy could be the all-time winner before his senior season. "You're going now into your junior year, and I think this is a great time to watch a guy like Brock begin to really flourish," coach Matt Campbell said. "He's ahead of the curve for what he's done - and for what he's had to do for us."

Ahead of the curve? Purdy already owns or shares 21 Iowa State game, season and career records. Career records easily within reach this season include touchdown passes (he needs four) and rushing touchdowns (needs five.) That would bring his impressive number of career marks to five - with a senior season still to go. "He has that mentality of taking the program and moving forward, and it was like he had it as soon as he stepped on campus. It was weird," former lineman Bryce Meeker said last month. "He can lead better than probably anybody I've ever met. It's unique." - Des Moines Register

  05/11/20 - Brock PurdySr/2022, Iowa State, 6-1, 212 (DS#11 QB) + More +

After losing hugely productive running back David Montgomery and wide receiver Hakeem Butler to the NFL after the 2018 season, the big question for Iowa State's offense was whether quarterback Brock Purdy's success would carry over. He showed last season not only that it would, but that he should be a darkhorse Heisman contender. He completed 65 percent of his passes for nearly 4,000 yards along with 27 touchdowns against nine interceptions. The Cyclones faltered down the stretch of the season but Purdy - with a true freshman running back and without truly dynamic options on the outside - kept them in Big 12 contention throughout much of the season. If the Cyclones are going to build on the success of the first four years of coach Matt Campbell's tenure, it's likely going to include significant contributions from Purdy, who has emerged as a potential first-round NFL draft pick. - News Gazette Tribune

Iowa State football coach Matt Campbell has high hopes for Brock Purdy, Breece Hall and Charlie Kolar Des Moines Register When college athletics emerges from the COVID-19 pandemic, it could be an entirely new world. From the logistical issues of social distancing to the financial impacts of a stressed economy, college athletics hasn't seen upheaval on this scale in generations. There are also more granular changes afoot, developments that would otherwise be the leading headlines in any normal spring. "Put it on the pile of challenges right now," Iowa State athletic director Jamie Pollard said in a phone interview with the Ames Tribune earlier this week. "There are two ways of looking at it: You probably couldn't pick a worse time to put that challenge into the mix, but then you might not have been able to find a better time, because if we're dealing with new stuff, might as well deal with it all at the same time."

The NCAA is poised to pass legislation that will allow student-athletes to profit off their name, image and likeness for the first time. That means endorsements like appearances, social media posts and sponsorships. How that legislation is shaped remains to be seen. There have been a number of proposals that would curb the opportunities or levels of financial compensation student athletes-could receive. That conversation will be robust over the next months as the NCAA makes decisions. "If it's truly market-based," Pollard said, "then let the market determine it." - Ames Tribune

  04/22/20 - Steve WirtelSr/2020, Iowa State, 6-4, 235 (DS#2 LS) + More +

Steve Wirtel hasn't needed a football field to get ready for the NFL Draft. Which is good, because Iowa State's facilities are shut down during the coronavirus pandemic. All the former Iowa State long snapper has needed is 15 yards of grass. So, most days, that's meant going out to a random spot about 20 yards away from a row of corn in an area across the street from Jack Trice Stadium with current Cyclones long snapper Connor Guess. "For me to complain that I don't have any space would be totally wrong and really dumb for me, because I can go snap on the concrete if I want to outside," Wirtel said. "I just love any way to get better and really just kind of going out there and doing my thing." Nobody in college may be better at long snapping than Wirtel.

He has such a strong and widely respected skillset that he could be one of the only long snappers to be selected during this week's NFL Draft, which takes place Thursday through Saturday. Wirtel has been an Iowa State mainstay the past four seasons, appearing in all 51 games. He handled all deep snaps, including punts, field goals and extra points. And he did it better than anyone else, earning first-team All-Big 12 Conference honors from Phil Steele in 2018 and 2019. Wirtel was also named a finalist for the Mannelly Award, given to the nation's top long snapper, last season. Iowa State coach Matt Campbell said NFL teams were showing interest in him two years ago. "Obviously his athleticism and his ability to make some tackles on punts really showed up early," Campbell said. - Des Moines Register

  03/18/20 - JaQuan BaileyrSr/2021, Iowa State, 6-2, 246 (DS#33 DE) + More +

The heart of the Cyclones' defense the last few years is gone. Ray Lima helped ISU implement a defensive scheme that was replicated across the country, and the nose guard is off to pursue a pro career. So is Jamahl Johnson, an underrated third-down stopper, who played as a true freshman in coach Matt Campbell's first season. Defensive end Matt Leo has graduated, too. So who is going to carry this group going forward? Perhaps the player with the most responsibility is one that ISU wasn't counting on having in 2020. Defensive end JaQuan Bailey was robbed of his senior season due to a lower leg injury, but secured a redshirt and will be back for a fifth season. It was a gift ISU wasn't expecting - he has 37 career starts and will likely produce the best sack numbers in school history when he's done - but it also adds a couple hurdles for the Cyclones in terms of lineups and rotations. - Ames Tribune

  03/15/20 - Charlie KolarrSr/2022, Iowa State, 6-7, 248 (DS#4 TE) + More +

Iowa State was scheduled to begin its practices on March 24, which will likely be delayed in accordance with Big 12 policy due to concerns of the coronavirus outbreak. Players, however, have already had an extended winter workout period to allow time to adjust to the new strength and conditioning program implemented by Dave Andrews, who came aboard from Pittsburgh. When coach Matt Campbell and his staff arrived in Ames four years ago, they saw the tight ends as a position that required a total rebuild. The only course of action they saw was to get on the recruiting trail to find high school players that fit into a vision of a hybrid position.

Four complete seasons, particularly the last one, have paid dividends to the work ISU did all those years ago. Chase Allen, Dylan Soehner and Charlie Kolar make up the three-headed monster for the Cyclones, with each exhibiting skill sets that are unique to one another. Allen has fought through several injuries in his career, but had 17 catches for 167 yards and two touchdowns as a redshirt junior. Soehner, at 6-foot-7 and 270 pounds, suffered a leg injury that required surgery at Kansas State, but seven catches for 107 yards and a score. Kolar, meanwhile, turned in one of the best seasons in ISU history by a tight end. The rising redshirt junior had 51 catches for 697 yards and seven touchdowns last year and earned all-Big 12 first team and All-America second team honors. - Ames Tribune
