  10/12/20 - Brock PurdySr/2022, Iowa State, 6-1, 212 (DS#11 QB) + More +

Brock Purdy was very good. The dandy quarterback made one statement after another throughout this game. He ran with authority, both on designed plays and on scrambles. His passing was as sharp as I've seen it - especially the one he threw that gave the Cyclones a 28-7 lead in the third quarter. With All-American tight end Charlie Kolar lined up on the right side of the line, Purdy dropped back in the pocket as Kolar broke behind the defenders trying to stop him. Purdy has a strong and accurate arm, but that wasn't what this play needed. He lofted a pass beautifully over the defender, that Kolar caught in stride. Touchdown Cyclones, and here's something else I observed on that play: Campbell leaped high to congratulate Purdy as the quarterback jaunted to the sidelines. Campbell did it with such authority, that his headset flew wildly off his head. Purdy completed 32 of 43 passes for 302 yards and two touchdowns. - Des Moines Register

  10/10/20 - Brock PurdySr/2022, Iowa State, 6-1, 212 (DS#11 QB) + More +

With an offense that did just about whatever it wanted and a defense that was dominant deep into the game, No. 24 Iowa State put away Texas Tech to get out to its best start in Big 12 play in 18 years. Brock Purdy passed for 302 yards and two touchdowns, Breece Hall rushed for 135 yards and two scores, and the Cyclones won 31-15 Saturday for their fifth straight win over the Red Raiders. Iowa State remained tied with Kansas State atop the Big 12 standings and have won three straight to open conference play for the first time since 2002 and only the second time since 1950. It was Iowa State's most complete performance this season, but coach Matt Campbell said there is plenty to clean up before the Cyclones (3-1, 3-0 Big 12) head to No. 10 Oklahoma State after an open date this week. - AP College/Auburn Football

  10/09/20 - *Breece HallJr/2022, Iowa State, 5-11, 218 (DS#1 RB) + More +

Sophomore running back Breece Hall was named the Big 12 offensive player of the week after rushing for 139 yards and two touchdowns against the Sooners. It came a week after a 155-yard, three-touchdown performance against TCU. "Breece had the opportunity to find some creases," Campbell said, "and the great thing about Breece is he's got great vision. His vision can allow him maybe to take a four or five or six yard run and create that into maybe a 20 or 30 yard run. "Credit there is all around, and certainly Breece has a unique ability to do really special things with the football when he can find creases."

Hall's continued emergence has allowed the Cyclone offense to rely less on quarterback Brock Purdy. The Cyclones have run the ball 112 times while passing it 97 through three games. "Finding balance has been big for us," Campbell said. "When we've been at our best, balance has been the key to success. When we have been off-kilter one way or another, I really don't know if that's the best football we can play. "Finding that balance within a game, finding that balance between the run game and the pass game, I really do think is critical for us becoming the best version of ourselves we can be." - Ames Tribune

OCT 5 BIG 12 OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Breece Hall, RB, So., Iowa State,...Instrumental in Iowa State's 37-30 win over No. 18 Oklahoma, Hall rushed for 139 yards and two touchdowns. The sophomore has rushed for over 100 yards in all three games, becoming the first Cyclone to go over the 100-yard rushing plateau in the first three games since 2001. He churned out 100 yards after intermission, including a 36-yard run late in the game to set up an eight-yard TD run. - Big 12 Football

The thought entering the season was that quarterback Brock Purdy would be the centerpiece of Iowa State's offense. Breece Hall is changing that assumption. The sophomore running back went for over 100 yards for the third-straight game and was the Cyclones' most consistent offensive option. After three touchdowns and 155 yards last week at TCU, Hall is establishing himself as one of the Big 12's premier offensive weapons. When the Cyclones had some of their highest-stakes moments against the Sooners, they leaned on Hall. - Des Moines Register

Norman North alumnus Charlie Kolar played a huge role in Iowa State's victory. The former T-Wolf and current Cyclone tight end recorded 66 yards on a team-leading four catches. The win marks Kolar's second win over OU in his college career - although he was still redshirting as a freshman when the Cyclones last beat the Sooners in 2017. - Norman Transcript

It was another milestone win for Matt Campbell's rising program at Iowa State. For Oklahoma, it was another crushing loss. Breece Hall scored the go-ahead touchdown on an 8-yard run with 4:06 left and Isheem Young intercepted Spencer Rattler's pass in the end zone on No. 18 Oklahoma's final drive, giving Iowa State a 37-30 victory Saturday night. The Sooners (1-2, 0-2 Big 12), beaten at home by Kansas State last week, dropped back-to-back regular-season games for the first time since 1999. They lost in Ames for the first time since 1960. "It was a great feeling to pull a W out and make history," Young said.

The Cyclones (2-1, 2-0) wore down the Sooners with the running of Hall, who rushed for 139 yards. Iowa State's Brock Purdy passed for 254 yards and had a 2-yard touchdown run to tie it at 30. "It's our senior class," said Campbell, Iowa State's fifth-year coach. "We've got 16 seniors who came here on a dream that we someday could turn Iowa State football around. They came here at 3-9 and believed in us and believed in our vision." The win was celebrated by a crowd of 13,724 at Jack Trice Stadium. No fans were allowed for the Sept. 12 loss to Louisiana-Lafayette. - Iowa State/AP College Football

  10/03/20 - Brock PurdySr/2022, Iowa State, 6-1, 212 (DS#11 QB) + More +

The stats just haven't been there for Brock Purdy. The yardage has been mediocre, the touchdown tally few. The completion percentage, inconsistent. The Iowa State quarterback certainly hasn't been bad - far from it - but he hasn't exactly been great, either. For a player with so much preseason expectation - whether it be a dark horse Heisman candidacy or his place on NFL mock drafts - the numbers haven't been all too impressive. Which maybe doesn't matter a whole lot.

"I'm not a big believer in numbers as it relates to how good a quarterback is," said Sage Rosenfels, one the best quarterbacks in Cyclone history who spent more than a decade in the NFL. "I've been impressed with how Brock's played the first couple games. A lot is asked of him on that football team, not only throwing the ball but also running the ball, and occasionally he makes a big mistake, but when you ask your quarterback to do everything, he is going to make mistakes on occasion. "That's the way the position is."

He was 16 of 35 (45.7 percent) for 145 yards and an interception against Louisiana, which defeated the Cyclones 31-14 in the season opener and shut down the Iowa State offense in the second half. "I don't think he played great in the first game," Rosenfels said, "but, honestly, I don't think he played bad in the first game. There were times there was nobody open. There were times he had pressure. There were times his receiver dropped balls. "So overall, I thought he played pretty dang well in the first game, even if all the numbers didn't end up that way." - Des Moines Register

  09/29/20 - JaQuan BaileyrSr/2021, Iowa State, 6-2, 246 (DS#33 DE) + More +

Iowa State senior JaQuan Bailey was named the Big 12 co-defensive player of the week for his strong performance against the Horned Frogs. Bailey had 3.5 sacks, along with a forced and recovered fumble. He became the Cyclones' all-time career leader in sacks and tied the record for most sacks in a game. "What you see in him is a fifth-year senior that understands his potential," Campbell said, "and his work ethic that he's put in during those months of March and April and May and June when nobody else was watching, was to a process of playing at an elite level. "He's off to a really positive start." Bailey shared the award with Kansas State's Jahron McPherson, who had 11 tackles and a forced fumble and an interception in the Wildcats' win over Oklahoma. - Des Moines Register

For the first time since Gary Patterson became head coach of the Horned Frogs (2001), TCU lost its home opener. TCU kept the game close, but was unable to complete its comeback, falling to Iowa State, 37-34. Even though Iowa State came away with the win, there was one mistake made by Iowa State QB Brock Purdy that got people talking. At the beginning of the third quarter, the TCU pass rush got to Purdy and on his way to the ground he attempted to throw the ball away. However, rather than sailing harmlessly out of bounds, the ball landed in the hands of TCU's La'Kendrick Van Zandt who ran the ball in for six. - Dallas Morning News

SEPT 28 BIG 12 CO-DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: JaQuan Bailey, DE, R-Sr., Iowa State,...Iowa State defensive end JaQuan Bailey tied Iowa State records for sacks (3.5) and TFL (4.0) in the win at TCU, while also registering a season-high seven tackles. One of his sacks forced a fumble that he recovered, setting up an ISU touchdown late in the second quarter. - Big 12 Football

  09/28/20 - Charlie KolarrSr/2022, Iowa State, 6-7, 248 (DS#4 TE) + More +

Charlie Kolar had a workmanlike five receptions for 27 yards during the Cyclones' 37-34 victory at TCU Saturday. Not great. Not horrible. Workmanlike. It's a good start for what's ahead - most immediately, the angry Sooners next Saturday in Ames. The important part about the pre-season All-American tight end's return is that he helped Brock Purdy's comfort level. I still don't think the Cyclones' quarterback looks as at ease as he's been, but maybe that's because he's just getting used to being reunited with his 2019 go-to receiver. Kolar didn't play in the opening loss against Louisiana. We hear he hadn't practiced a lot since workouts resumed. A lower-body injury set him back, but he started Saturday and was back to doing what he does. Cyclones deep receivers still unable to get adequate consistent separation from defensive backs, Purdy needed his buddy Kolar back on the field. It's not like they worked magical big plays on what was an otherwise Big Play Saturday. They just did the efficient stuff, and sometimes, that's all it takes. - Des Moines Register

  09/28/20 - JaQuan BaileyrSr/2021, Iowa State, 6-2, 246 (DS#33 DE) + More +

It happened on the game's first series, when the redshirt senior was credited with a half-sack. That gave him 19, with at least 10 games left to add to it, and he did just that on TCU's next possession - and this time, he wasn't sharing. The record's been a long-time coming for the personable Floridian. He entered last season tied, but suffered a season-ending leg injury at Baylor in Game No. 4. Among his 3 1/2 sacks Saturday the defensive trifecta - he sacked the quarterback with so much force that he fumbled. Who but JaQuan Bailey, of course. "We had great coverage on the back end, which enabled us to get to the quarterback," the humble Bailey said. "It was a boom-boom play. I was focused on closing out of it." And topping off the wonderful play by jumping on the loose ball? "The play just kind of happened," he said. - Des Moines Register

  09/28/20 - *Breece HallJr/2022, Iowa State, 5-11, 218 (DS#1 RB) + More +

Who leads Big 12 rushers after two games? Yep. Hall's 257 yards on 38 carries is tops, followed by West Virginia's Leddie Brown's 227 yards. That means absolutely nothing right now, except in Iowa State's case, it means Hall has continued where he left off last season. Campbell was critical of his No. 1 tailback after the opening for losing a fumble and almost losing another. There were blocking problems, as well, but Saturday was different. "Breece is super talented," Campbell said after the TCU game. "He took some of the areas where he needed to be better from the first week and got better. Areas like the run game, an area like blocking people and an area like running the ball. It takes time, You saw some really good growth against what we know is an elite run defense." - Des Moines Register
