  11/28/22 - Cade McNamararSr/2025, Iowa + More +

Michigan quarterback Cade McNamara has entered the transfer portal, team spokesman Dave Ablauf confirmed on Monday. McNamara had a season-ending injury to his right knee on Sept. 17 against Connecticut, one game after J.J. McCarthy won the starting job. McCarthy will lead the second-ranked Wolverines against Purdue on Saturday night in the Big Ten championship game in Indianapolis, needing a win to earn a spot in the College Football Playoff. Last year, McNamara helped Michigan end an eight-game losing streak to rival Ohio State and go on to win the conference championship for the first time since 2004. The third-team All-Big Ten player in 2021 threw for 2,576 yards with 15 touchdowns and six interceptions.

McNamara, who is from Reno, Nevada, can potentially play at another school for two seasons. He redshirted as a freshman in 2019 and the NCAA has given any student-athlete from the 2020-21 school year an extra year of eligibility. Coach Jim Harbaugh allowed McNamara and McCarthy to start a game this season before deciding who would be the first-string quarterback. That did not sit well with the returning starter. "I would definitely say it's pretty unusual," said McNamara, sounding surly, after a win over Colorado State in his last start. "It was kind of a thing that I wasn't expecting. By the end of camp, I thought I had my best camp and put myself in a good position." Earlier this month, McNamara posted a picture of himself in a wheelchair with a brace over a protective wrap on his right leg after being under the care of Los Angeles Rams and Dodgers team doctor Neal ElAttrache. - AP College Football

A two-time Big South Freshman of the Week honoree this season, Anderson is the first Charleston Southern player honored with the Offensive Freshman of the Year award since its inception in 2018.   11/19/22 - Jack CampbellrJr/2023, Iowa + More +

Drew Stevens made a 21-yard field goal with 28 seconds left to lift Iowa over Minnesota for a 13-10 victory on Saturday, after the Hawkeyes forced two late turnovers to take control of the Big Ten West with their eighth straight win over the Gophers for the Floyd of Rosedale trophy. Jack Campbell caused a fumble and came up with an interception off a tipped pass to thwart Minnesota drives in the closing minutes for Iowa (7-4, 5-3), which would repeat as division champions and return to the conference title game by beating Nebraska next week. Iowa got a break before the game when No. 3 Michigan came back to beat Illinois and push the Illini out of first place. Purdue stayed tied at the top, but the Hawkeyes own the tiebreaker after beating the Boilermakers two weeks ago.

Mohamed Ibrahim trampled a dominant Hawkeyes defense by rushing for a career-high 263 yards and a touchdown on 39 carries, but the sixth-year star lost just his second fumble of the season with 5:07 remaining on a third-and-4 run that would've given the Gophers a first down at the 9. Campbell knocked the ball out, and Deontae Craig recovered it. Minnesota (7-4, 4-4) forced a three-and-out and took over at its 45 with 4:11 to go, when Ibrahim ripped a 19-yard run off the right side to put the Gophers right back in scoring range. But on third-and-7 from the 33, Athan Kaliakmanis - making his third career start - threw a slant to fellow redshirt freshman La'Meke Brockington that Riley Moss reached to deflect. Campbell snagged it in the air, returned it 30 yards and almost scored - but his right foot was ruled out at the 45. Spencer Petras, who scored on a first-quarter quarterback sneak and went 15 for 24 for 221 yards, hit Luke Lachey for 33 yards on the next play. That put the Hawkeyes well within range for their freshman kicker, who made a 38-yarder in the first quarter. Matthew Trickett hit a 27-yard field goal in the third quarter for Minnesota, but he pulled a 34-yard try wide right with 38 seconds left before halftime. - Iowa/AP College Football

  11/12/22 - Cooper DeJeanJr/2024, Iowa + More +

Cooper DeJean returned an interception for a touchdown and set up another score with a 41-yard punt return as Iowa defeated Wisconsin 24-10 on Saturday. The Hawkeyes (6-4, 4-3 Big Ten) moved into a tie for the Big Ten West lead with their third consecutive win. Iowa, ranked 129th nationally in total offense, had just 142 yards and averaged 2.1 yards per play, but took advantage of plays made by its defense and special teams. DeJean, a sophomore cornerback who also had 10 tackles, had a 32-yard interception return late in the first half that gave Iowa a 14-3 lead. Then, with the Hawkeyes holding a 14-10 lead in the third quarter, DeJean's punt return gave Iowa the ball at the Wisconsin 18-yard line. Five plays later quarterback Spencer Petras scored on a 1-yard dive.

Iowa's first touchdown also followed a special teams play in the second quarter. Deontae Craig blocked a punt by Wisconsin's Andy Vujnovich and Jay Higgins recovered at the Badgers' 17-yard line. Kaleb Johnson scored on a 4-yard run two plays later to give Iowa a 7-3 lead. Wisconsin (5-5, 3-4), which had 227 yards of offense, scored first on a 32-yard field goal from Nate Van Zelst. Graham Mertz threw a 51-yard touchdown pass to Keontez Lewis with 52 seconds left in the first half to cut Iowa's lead to 14-10. Iowa's Drew Stevens had a 44-yard field goal with 2:54 left in the game for the final points. Petras, who threw for just 94 yards, was sacked six times. Mertz threw for 176 yards but was sacked four times. - Iowa/AP College Football

Kaleb Johnson ran for 200 yards on 22 carries, including a touchdown, and Spencer Petras passed for two touchdowns to power Iowa past Purdue 24-3 on Saturday. Purdue's Aidan O'Connell struggled to find his rhythm on a windy day, completing just 20 of 43 passes for 168 yards and two interceptions. Both teams are now 5-4 and 3-3 in the Big Ten. Leading 17-3 at halftime, it took Iowa just 17 seconds in the second half to push the lead to 24-3 on Johnson's 75-yard touchdown run. After starting the game 2 of 6, Petras finished 13 of 23 for 192 yards with two touchdowns.

The Hawkeyes took a 7-0 on Petras' 16-yard TD pass to Sam LaPorta, his first TD catch of the season, in the first minute of the second quarter. After Kaevon Merriweather intercepted O'Connell, Iowa scored when Petras connected with Nico Ragaini for 29 yards to push the lead to 14-0. The Boilermakers drove to the Iowa 26 before Seth Benson's interception at the 15-yard-old snuffed out the drive. The Hawkeyes picked up a first down on the Purdue 1 before three straight plays for a loss forced the Iowa to settle for a 26-yard field goal by Drew Stevens. Purdue's only score came on Mitchell Fineran's 34-yard field goal with 1:40 left in the second quarter. - Iowa/AP College Football
