Hunter Dekkers threw for two touchdowns and Xavier Hutchinson caught ten passes for 123 yards and a score as Iowa State defeated West Virginia 31-14 on Saturday. The Cyclones (4-5, 1-5 Big 12) snapped a five-game losing streak and kept alive their hopes of playing in a bowl game for the sixth straight season. Dekkers, who finished 24-of-36 passing for 219 yards, engineered an 8-play, 94-yard drive that helped Iowa State seize control early in the fourth quarter. The Cyclones were helped by a roughing-the-punter penalty and boosted by Deon Silas' 38-yard run before Hutchinson capped the drive with a 24-yard scoring catch. Silas finished with 77 rushing yards.

Cartevious Norton ran for 69 yards and two touchdowns. West Virginia (3-6, 1-5) netted just 200 total yards on offense, with much of it coming after the outcome had been determined. Dekkers capped a 13-play, 86-yard drive with a 16-yard touchdown pass to DeShawn Hanika, giving Iowa State a 10-0 lead with 7:51 left in the second quarter. At that point, the Cyclones were outgaining the Mountaineers 174 yards to 41, with ten first downs to West Virginia's three. But Dekkers and the offense started to sputter. The Mountaineers cut the margin to 10-7 before halftime when J.T. Daniels threw a 25-yard touchdown to Bryce Ford-Wheaton. - Iowa State/AP College Football

Iowa State running back Jirehl Brock is likely "week to week" after suffering an ankle injury Saturday in the Cyclones' 14-11 loss to Kansas. "I don't think it's going to be like the end (of his season)," Iowa State coach Matt Campbell said. "I think it would be more like week to week." Brock had just one carry against the Jayhawks before leaving with the injury. He spent time on the sideline working with trainers in an attempt to get back into the game, but didn't play another snap. "I got hit," Brock told the Register after the game. "We'll get back to Ames and see what exactly is wrong. I was trying to go on it in the first half, but it just (wasn't to be)." "I'm not going to go out there and risk more injury. So we'll see." - Des Moines Register

TRACKING TOP DRAFT PROSPECTS - WEEK 2: 30. Will McDonald IV, rSr, DE, Iowa State, 6-3, 245, 1,...McDonald was active and effective while finishing with one tackle and one assist in a dramatic, 10-7, won over Iowa in the annual Cy-Hawk game. Previous week, No. 31: McDonald, who had 11.5 sacks last season and 10.5 in 2020, failed to add another in Iowa State's 42-10 romp over Southeastern Missouri State. He did have one tackle as the Cyclones held the Redhawks to 320 total yards, including 98 rushing. Fresh off the big win over SEMO, Iowa State will travel to Iowa City next week for the annual Cy-Hawk matchup against Iowa. - Frank Cooney/NFL Draft Scout

SEPT 12 BIG 12 CO-NEWCOMER OF THE WEEK: Iowa State's Colby Reeder picked off a pass and had a pair of quarterback hurries as the Cyclone defense limited Iowa to just 58 yards rushing and 150 yards of total offense in a 10-7 win. The senior LB tacked on four tackles, including one behind the line of scrimmage for a loss. He has recorded five quarterback hurries through the first two games this season. - Big 12 Football

Xavier Hutchinson caught an 8-yard touchdown pass from Hunter Dekkers in the fourth quarter, completing a 99-yard drive to lead Iowa State past Iowa, 10-7, on Saturday. The 21-play possession that started in the third quarter took 11 minutes, 49 seconds off the clock, and helped the Cyclones (2-0) end a six-game losing streak to the Hawkeyes (1-1). "Our whole mindset was, "One play at a time," Hutchinson said. "When the ball comes to you, just make a play." Iowa State survived three turnovers and two blocked punts to gain their first road win in the in-state rivalry since 2014, forcing three Iowa turnovers and holding the Hawkeyes to 150 yards of offense. "It's a game of imperfection," Iowa State coach Matt Campbell said. "For our kids to have the character and resiliency to keep playing, those are traits that will continue to serve us well." Still, the Hawkeyes had a chance to tie the game in the final seconds. Two penalties on Iowa State after what appeared to be a game-ending turnover by the Hawkeyes gave Iowa the ball at the Cyclones' 39-yard line with nine seconds left. Quarterback Spencer Petras threw a 9-yard pass to tight end Sam LaPorta to get Iowa into field-goal range, but Aaron Blom's 48-yard field goal attempt was wide left as time expired. - Iowa State/AP College Football

Hunter Dekkers made his debut as Iowa State's starting quarterback Saturday and threw for 293 yards and four touchdowns in a 42-10 rout of Southeast Missouri. Dekkers, who completed a total of 25 passes in two seasons as the Cyclones' backup, finished 25 of 31 against the Redhawks, helping Iowa State to its most lopsided season-opening win since 2001. Xavier Hutchinson caught a career-best three touchdowns, finishing with 128 yards on eight receptions. The Cyclones' running game got off to a sluggish start, but Jirehl Brock rushed for 99 of his 104 yards in the second half, scoring on a 1-yard run in the fourth quarter to give Iowa State a 35-10 lead. Paxton DeLaurent was Southeast Missouri's most consistent offensive performer, running and passing for 296 yards. The Cyclones scored on their first three possessions, and after a couple of hiccups late in the second quarter, regained control in the third and cruised to victory. Dekkers' only big gaffe was an interception just before halftime. He was the first quarterback other than Brock Purdy to start for Iowa State since 2018. - Iowa State/AP College Football

Does Thursday's confirmation that starting right tackle Jake Remsburg is out with an injury mean another round of the Iowa State offensive line shuffle? Already, line coach Jeff Myers said redshirt freshman Tyler Maro had been moved from left tackle to back up Grant Treiber, who was Remsburg's No. 2 on the right side. That's at least tackle replacing tackle, which is a positive thing - and unlike how last season went. At times during the 7-6 campaign of 2021, offensive line injuries were so significant that five guards were forced to play at the same time. That didn't happen much, but it happened. It showed the vulnerability that just one injury can cause.

Myers said "no comment" when asked if Remsburg had an MCL-related knee injury. Those types of injuries are common among offensive linemen, who are knocked every which way on each play. "Jake's day-to-day," Myers said after practice Thursday. "The goal right now is we can get him rolling back into practice and get him ready for week one. With that being said, it is a day-to-day thing, but our goal and our timeline right now is get him ready for that first week - getting him rolling back into practice and see where he's at." - Des Moines Register
