After participating in two games with Auburn in 2020, defensive back Devan Barrett opted out. "Devin, gosh I guess it was a couple of weeks ago, opted out," coach Gus Malzahn said. "So I'm not for sure if he's going to look at other schools or whatever." A four-star running back out of Florida, Barrett contributed as a true freshman in 2017 when he was a reserve tailback and a returner. He had 112 yards on 24 touches and scored a touchdown against Arkansas after catching a four-yard pass from Malik Willis. The following year, Barrett contributed as both a running back and defensive back, having moved to wide receiver and then cornerback by the end of fall camp. Barrett had very little experience on the defensive side of the ball because he was primarily an offensive player in high school, but he said he wanted to help the team. Barrett made three tackles that season while playing minimal minutes. As a special teams player, he ended up returning a blocked punt for a touchdown in the win over Alabama State. - Birmingham News

Wide receivers don't grow on trees, they're developed. It's a process Texas A&M has had to accelerate this season and the Aggies might have to amp it up even more. A&M, which already had lost four of the seven underclassmen listed at wide receiver on last year's depth chart for the Texas Bowl, lost another one with sophomore Caleb Chapman suffering a major injury in last week's 41-38 victory over Florida. Chapman accounted for 28% of A&M's offense in the game with nine receptions for 151 yards with two touchdowns. It was the most productive game by an A&M receiver in 29 games under head coach Jimbo Fisher. Chapman was complemented by Chase Lane and Ainias Smith, who combined for nine catches for 105 yards with a touchdown, along with tight end Jalen Wydermyer who had five receptions for 53 yards. Throw in Isaiah Spiller's 174 yards rushing with two touchdowns and the offense looked promising considering all are underclassmen. Chapman's emergence also offset the departure of senior Jhamon Ausbon, the team's leading receiver last year who opted out during fall camp.

Chapman was injured on a 51-yard touchdown catch that tied the game at 38. "It looks like he has an injury and he'll probably be out for the rest of the year," Fisher said. It's Chapman's second major injury. He played two games as a true freshman in 2018 before suffering a season-ending injury. He played in 11 games last season with one start. He had only one catch for 6 yards. Chapman took to social media to thank everyone for prayers and support. "Without the lows the highs mean nothing," he said. "Bounce back gonna be scary. See you then." - Bryan/College Station Eagle

Lamont Johnson pulled in a 21-yard pass from Jon Copeland in the fourth quarter with the winning score as Incarnate Word defeated Southeastern Louisiana 27-21 Saturday night, downing a ranked opponent for the second week in a row. The game-clinching touchdown gave Incarnate Word (4-2, 3-1 Southland) a 27-14 lead with 9:23 remaining. Southeastern Louisiana (3-3, 2-2), ranked 23rd in the FCS coach's poll, cut that to 27-21 on a Marcus Cooper 16-yard run but the Lions suffered an interception and turned the ball over on downs for their final two possessions.

After being intercepted by Jaylon Jimmerson with five minutes left, Chason Virgil's pass on fourth-and-2 was broken up by Gerald Bowie II with 35 seconds remaining and Incarnate Word ran out the clock. Virgil threw for 337 yards and a TD but was picked off four times. Southeastern Louisiana committed six turnovers and Incarnate Word has forced turnovers in 18 straight games going back to the 2017 season.   Jon Copeland threw for 342 yards and three touchdowns and Incarnate Word never trailed and held off Houston Baptist with a 38-36 win Saturday night. Carson Mohr's 31-yard field with 2:37 left in the third quarter proved invaluable for Incarnate Word (3-2, 2-1 Southland) as it gave the Cardinals a 38-30 lead. Bailey Zappe's 17-yard touchdown pass to Gamar Girdy Brito with 3:14 left brought Houston Baptist within 38-36. Zappe threw incomplete to Ben Ratzlaff and the 2-point conversion attempt failed. Jon Copeland threw for 170 yards for the Cardinals (2-2). Ameer King had 61 rushing yards and a score. Incarnate Word led 13-3 at halftime thanks to two scoring runs by Philio. Tre Richardson stopped the Wildcats surge with a 56-yard interception return. A Cardinals field goal four plays later pushed their advantage to 23-17 early in the fourth and Philio's third TD run made it 31-17. The Wildcats scored late in the fourth to close to 31-24 and were on the move in the final minute when Jaylon Jimmerson intercepted Anthony, sealing the Cardinals win.
