  OCT 14 MISSOURI VALLEY OFFENSIVE PLAYER & NEWCOMER OF THE WEEK: QB J'Bore Gibbs, South Dakota State, 6-3, 230, R-Fr., Chicago, Ill. (Phillips High),...Gibbs helped engineer a second-half comeback for South Dakota State by rushing for two touchdowns and throwing for another as the Jackrabbits rallied from a 21-9 deficit late in the third quarter for a 38-28 road win at Youngstown State on Oct. 12. Gibbs' first touchdown run was from 2 yards out, while his 63-yard score in the final minute sealed the victory. His touchdown pass covered 81 yards to Cade Johnson and gave the Jackrabbits a 22-21 lead. Gibbs finished the night 14-of-26 passing for 210 yards and also was the team's leading rusher with 75 yards on 12 carries. - Missouri Valley Football

  J'Bore Gibbs threw for a touchdown and ran for two more and South Dakota State beat Youngstown State 38-28 on Saturday night in a battle between two of the top teams in the Football Championship Subdivision. Gibbs completed 14 of 26 passes for 210 yards and had 12 carries for 75 yards for South Dakota State, which went into the game ranked No. 3 in the FCS Coaches poll. Nathan Mays hit Joe Alessi for a 45-yard touchdown to give No. 17 Youngstown State (4-2, 0-2 Missouri Valley Conference) a 21-9 lead midway through the third quarter but the Jackrabbits answered with a 13-play, 75-yard drive capped by Gibbs' 2-yard TD run.

South Dakota State forced the Penguins to punt on their next possession then Gibbs connected with Cade Johnson on an 81-yard touchdown catch-and-run. Johnson, on a reverse-pass, found Blake Kunz in the end zone for the 2-point conversion to give the Jackrabbits (5-1, 2-0) their first lead at 24-21 early in the fourth quarter. About a minute later, DyShawn Gales picked off a pass from Mays at the Youngstown State 44 and C.J. Wilson's 13-yard scoring run made it 31-21 with 6:13 to play. Joe Craycraft replaced Mays, who was limping after taking several hits, including back-to-back sacks. Craycraft hit Miles Joiner for a 17-yard touchdown to trim YSU's deficit to three with 2:54 left but Gibbs responded with a 63-yard TD run to seal it. - South Dakota State/AP College Football

  J'Bore Gibbs threw a pair of touchdown passes to Jaxon Janke to break open the game in the fourth quarter and South Dakota State beat Southern Illinois 28-10 on Saturday in a Missouri Valley Football League opener. The Salukis (2-3) led 10-9 at halftime after Kare Lyles passed 19 yards to Nigel Kilby with 12 seconds left in the second quarter. But Pierre Strong burst through the line for the go-ahead score on a 64-yard run midway through the third quarter.

Strong, who had four runs of over 25 yards, finished with a season-high 229 yards on 20 carries for the Jackrabbits (4-1), ranked third in the FCS. Gibbs threw a 58-yard TD pass to Cade Johnson in the first quarter and Chase Vinatieri, nephew of NFL kicker Adam Vinatieri, had a 39-yard field goal and finished the game with the Jackrabbits' record for career points via kicking at 322.   SEPT 23/WEEK 4 BIG SKY DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Idaho linebacker Charles Akanno, a junior, led Idaho to a 35-27 win against No. 11 Eastern Washington. It was Idaho's first win against an opponent ranked No. 11 or higher since 1999. Akanno registered a career-high nine tackles and assisted on a tackle for loss. He added three pass breakups and three quarterback hurries. Akanno’s forced fumble in the second quarter led to a four-play, 24-yard scoring drive that gave the Vandals a 21-0 lead. In the third quarter, Akanno’s quarterback hurry led to an incomplete pass on 4th and goal on the Idaho three-yard line that halted the Eagles’ chances of scoring late in the quarter. Akanno and the Vandal defense held Eastern Washington to 95 rushing yards at an average of 3.0 yards per rush.   SEPT 23/WEEK 4 STATS FCS NATIONAL DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Charles Akanno, Idaho, LB, R-Jr., 6-1, 247, Inglewood, California,Idaho knocked off fellow Big Sky member Eastern Washington 35-27 as Akanno recorded career highs with nine tackles (seven solos) and three pass breakups to go with a forced fumble, a half tackle for loss and three pass breakups. He did over half of the damage in the first half while the Vandals built a 28-0 halftime lead. During a goal-line stand late in the third quarter, Akanno stopped a runner for no gain from the Idaho 1 and had a fourth-down QB hurry that caused an errant pass and turnover on downs.

  Aundre Carter ran for a 27-yard touchdown with 1:35 left to help Idaho seal a 41-31 victory over Central Washington on Saturday night. Tony Archie threw his only pass, a 39-yard touchdown to JoJo Hillel that pulled Central Washington to 34-31 with 7:13 remaining. Carter's TD capped a six-play, 59-yard drive for the Vandals (1-1). Carter had 123 yards rushing and two touchdowns. Roshaun Johnson added 111 yards on the ground that included a 13-yard touchdown run for Idaho. Mason Petrino was 23-of-30 passing for 209 yards and threw a pair of touchdown passes to Jeff Cotton, who finished with 16 catches for 145 yards. Canon Racanelli was 13-of-31 passing for 146 yards with two touchdown passes for Central Washington. Hillel also had one throw, a 60-yard TD pass to Archie. He became the first Idaho offensive lineman to earn All-America recognition since Mike Iupati in 2009. Johnson has started 23 games in his Idaho career, including 20 consecutive, all at strong guard.

He has garnered all-conference honors each of his first three seasons. In addition to last season's first-team Big Sky nod, Johnson was named to the All-Sun Belt Second Team in 2017, and was on the league's all-newcomer team as a true freshman in 2016. - Idaho Football

The Rathdrum, Idaho, native averaged 44.1 yards per punt in 2018, to rank fifth in the FCS and help Idaho net 40 yards per punt – the best mark in the Big Sky and second best in the country.
