Idaho placed two on the first and three on the third team. Noah Ellis and Tyrese Dedmon both earned All-Big Sky honorable mention honors.   A relaxed grin, unobscured by a mask, lit up Tre Walker's face as he sat at a media table at the Big Sky Conference Football Kickoff at the Davenport Grand in Spokane on Monday. This was one more illustration that a long, strange journey of attempting to play college football through a pandemic was coming to an end. Normal life was returning. This was how it used to be at the start of a season: a media gathering, bright with optimism as coaches and players looked forward to the start of preseason camp. COVID-19 took away the University of Idaho's 2020 season, though, and Walker and the Vandals endured the tedium of practice with no games to look forward to, regular nose swabs for COVID-19 testing, and restrictive daily routines that might have seemed familiar to a cloistered monk. The Vandals finally were able to play six games last spring, finishing 2-4, and Walker, who played in only four of those games because of COVID exposure protocol, was Idaho's leading tackler with 54, an average of 13.5 tackles per game.

That body of work made him an All-American and the Big Sky's preseason defensive Most Valuable Player. Logan Kendall, Idaho's first-team All-Big Sky fullback and a third-team All-American, says the experience of the past year "makes you a stronger team, closer together. It helped us out a lot." At the start of his fourth season as a Vandal linebacker, Walker expects momentum generated by playing real games last spring will carry over to this fall. "It's a quick turnaround from last season to this season," he acknowledged. But the spring games were "an opportunity to work on our craft, work on our skills." As the Vandals approach a normal 11-game season again "we've waited a long time. We put a lot of work in," Walker says. - Spokesman-Review

The junior tied for a team-high 15 tackles (10 solo, 5 assisted), had an 11-yard sack, and forced a fumble. Walker's defensive impact helped hold No. 12 Eastern Washington to 14 points on offense, as Idaho won its season opener, 28-21.   Mike Beaudry passed for 296 yards and two touchdowns, including a 25-yarder to Hayden Hatten in the closing seconds, and Idaho beat Eastern Washington 28-21 on Saturday in the season opener for both teams in a season delayed by the coronavirus pandemic. Beaudry completed 22 of 45 and threw one interception and Hatten finished with six receptions for 138 yards. Beaudry threw a 14-yard TD pass to Cutrell Haywood to make it 21-all with 5:42 left in the third quarter. Neither team scored again until he led an eight-play, 68-yard drive capped by Hatten's touchdown reception that gave the Vandals their first lead of the game with 54 seconds to play.   Lightbourn, a transfer from Nebraska, is built more like Beavers outside linebacker Hamilcar Rashed Jr. While at Camas High School earlier in his career, Lightbourn once pitched coach Jon Eagle to let him try a 50-yard field goal. "When you get a quarterback sack," Eagle told Lightbourn. "He sat there for three or four seconds, and says, 'Well, I'd have to play defense.' I said, 'That's exactly right.' He said, 'I'll take a pass on that." Lightbourn is a big guy. Maybe not big enough to play defense, but big enough to know when there's a problem. Two years ago during his third year at Nebraska, it hit Lightbourn that not all was right. Shortly after he was replaced as the Cornhuskers' regular punter, Lightbourn sensed he was having mental issues.

As he recently revealed on social media, Lightbourn noticed he was gaining weight and lying in bed for most of the day. It was a change from the "happy kid" Lightbourn described himself as growing up in Long Beach, California, and Camas. "I knew I had an issue, but I couldn't figure out what it was," Lightbourn said. Lightbourn recently revealed his bout with depression because of current circumstances regarding the pandemic and racial injustice. "In these types of trying times, people can feel alone or feeling depressed or whatever it is," Lightbourn said. "People need to know it's not just them, and to let them know they're not alone in this. I felt confident enough now to come out and say it." - The Oregonian
