  06/14/22 - Maliq CarrrSr/2025, Houston, 6-4, 250 (DS#25 TE) + More +

Two Michigan athletes could be on their way to finding success on professional wrestling's biggest stage. World Wrestling Entertainment announced Monday its adding 15 student-athletes from 14 universities to the company's "Next in Line" name, image and likeness program. Michigan State football and basketball's Maliq Carr and Central Michigan women's basketball's Mikala Hall are among them, and will be officially unveiled alongside the rest of the class at the NIL Summit at the College Football Hall of Fame on June 13 in Atlanta.

Aimed to recruit and develop talent, WWE's NIL program launched in December 2021 and has signed 31 full-time college athletes since then, with 25 active athletes currently in the program. The partnerships feature training in brand building, media, communications, live event promotions, creative writing, community relations and access to WWE's performance center in Orlando. After completing the program, athletes could be offered WWE contracts. Carr, a Oak Park High product, transferred from Purdue to MSU in May 2021. Listed at 6 feet 8, 245 pounds, Carr had eight catches for 135 yards in 12 games for the Spartans as a redshirt freshman last season. The Oak Park High School alum was ranked as four-star prospect by 247Sports and the No. 3 recruit in Michigan in 2020. - Lansing State Journal

  05/31/22 - Jason Brooks Jr.rSr/2026, Houston, 6-3, 315 (DS#142 OG) + More +

Jason Brooks was playing video games with a friend one day in high school when the friend, for no real reason, started calling Brooks by a different name. Queso. The name made Brooks laugh, so he added it to his Twitter handle. Soon, other friends picked up on it. Then his football coaches at Dobie High in Houston started calling him Queso, too. And it was official. Brooks had a new nickname.

Years later, he still answers to Queso. Still has cheese emojis on his Twitter handle. And in a little over a week, Queso comes to Stillwater. Brooks, a 6-foot-4, 295-pound offensive lineman, committed to the Oklahoma State football program in March, and he reports to campus on June 6 as one of three incoming players via the transfer portal. He and the others - offensive lineman Casey Collier and running back Deondre Jackson - will arrive next month looking to add depth at positions in need of extra bodies for the fall. - Daily Oklahoman

  05/03/22 - DAnthony JonesrSr/2023, Houston, 6-0, 276 (DS#42 DT) + More +

A few key residents of "Sack Ave.," the name given to UH's defensive line, have moved on, but the neighborhood is still brimming with talent. Gone are Logan Hall and David Anenih, who combined for 11 sacks and 23 tackles for loss last season. Hall is expected to be taken among the top 50 selections and could join Ed Oliver (2019) and Payton Turner (2021) as first-round selections, while Anenih is projected as a sixth- or seventh-round pick. Defensive line coach Brian Early returns plenty of options that should allow the Cougars to freely rotate eight to 10 players up front in the 4-3 scheme.

Derek Parish opted to return for his final year of college eligibility, providing the Cougars with a capable edge rusher who accounted for 5 1/2 sacks, 12 1/2 tackles for loss and was fourth on the team with 56 tackles. D'Anthony Jones, a 6-2, 285-pound senior with an explosive first step, finished second in the AAC in sacks (seven) and forced fumbles (four) last season. He racked up the impressive totals while splitting time with Anenih and playing only 40 percent of the defensive snaps. "My expectation is as highest for him as anybody on our team," defensive coordinator/associate head coach Doug Belk said. "Hopefully with increased reps his in-game production doubles or triples." - Houston Chronicle

  04/22/22 - Nathaniel DellrJr/2023, Houston, 5-08, 165 (DS#16 WR) + More +

Dell added his name to the long list of standout wide receivers to play at UH with a breakout season that produced 90 catches, 1,329 yards and 12 touchdowns. Dell goes by the nickname "Tank" - which has nothing to do with his 5-foot-10, 155-pound frame and everything to do with how he bulldozed opposing secondaries last season. Dell's yardage total was the fifth-most in school history, his receptions ranked 12th and his touchdowns are tied for eighth. He got even better late in the season with five 100-yard games over the final seven games, including 152 yards against Cincinnati in the AAC Championship Game. "I think he's the best receiver in the country," running back Ta'Zhawn Henry said. "I feel like everybody is sleeping on him." Dell displays the blend of speed and sure hands that makes him one of the statistically-best returning receivers in the nation. How much better can he be? Transfer portal additions this offseason will allow coach Dana Holgorsen to move Dell to one of the inside receiver spots (a luxury the Cougars did not have last season) and put Dell in some favorable matchups. He has developed a strong rapport with quarterback Clayton Tune, who has come to depend on Dell whether it's for a game-changing play or to move the chains on third down. - Houston Chronicle

  04/20/22 - Clayton TunerSr/2023, Houston, 6-3, 220 (DS#12 QB) + More +

Tune enters his fifth and final season in search of an elusive conference title - and to join some of the Cougars' all-time quarterback greats in the record book. With 7,920 yards, Tune is on pace to join Case Keenum (19,217) and Kevin Kolb (12,964) as the only 10,000-yard passers in school history. His 64 passing touchdowns are currently fifth. Perhaps, most importantly, with the Cougars expected to be among the preseason favorites in the AAC, Tune has a chance to become just the sixth quarterback (Danny Davis, Delrick Brown, Chuck Clements, Kolb and Greg Ward Jr.) in the past 46 years to lead the Cougars to a conference title.

Tune is coming off his best season with career highs in passing yards (3,544), touchdowns (30), completions (287) and completion percentage (68.3 percentage) to lead UH to the AAC championship game and just the third 12-win season in program history. What changed? A hamstring injury. Specifically, Tune developed more of a pocket presence, relying more on a backfield led by Alton McCaskill and 1,300-yard receiver Nathaniel Dell, as he recovered from the injury suffered in Week 2. Rather than rely on instincts and athleticism, Tune began to look at defenses differently and become more comfortable at calling plays at the line. - Houston Chronicle

  12/28/22 - Donovan SmithrSr/2025, Houston, 6-4, 219 (DS#25 QB) + More +

Donovan Smith threw for 252 yards and a touchdown and ran for another score, and Texas Tech beat Mississippi State 34-7 in the Liberty Bowl on Tuesday night. Tahj Brooks rushed for 107 yards and a touchdown and SaRodorick Thompson ran for 80 yards and a score for the Red Raiders (7-6), who finished with a winning record for the first time since 2015. They were appearing in their first bowl game since 2017. Mississippi State (7-6) fell short in coach Mike Leach's first game against a former program of his. Leach, who went 84-43 at Texas Tech from 2000-09, failed to become the first Bulldogs coach to end each of his first two seasons with a bowl victory. Mississippi State was playing in its 12th straight bowl game. Red Raiders interim coach Sonny Cumbie, a former player at Texas Tech under Leach, ended his five-game run with a 2/3 record. Cumbie, who is departing to become Louisiana Tech's coach, took over for Matt Wells in October.

Leach's prolific offense never could get rolling against the Red Raiders and the resulting lopsided loss dropped the Southeastern Conference to 0-4 in the postseason. The Bulldogs were held scoreless in the second half and finished with 344 yards, 105 below their average. Mississippi State was without three offensive linemen, including All-SEC left tackle Charles Cross, a projected top 10 pick in the NFL draft. - Texas Tech/AP College Football

  12/28/22 - Clayton TunerSr/2023, Houston, 6-3, 220 (DS#12 QB) + More +

Clayton Tune and the Houston Cougars punctuated an impressive season with a win in Southeastern Conference country. Jake Herslow caught a 26-yard, go-ahead touchdown pass from Tune with 3:27 left to help lift No. 21 Houston to a 17-13 victory over Auburn on Tuesday in the Birmingham Bowl in front of a mostly orange-and-blue crowd at Protective Stadium. The Cougars (12-2) marched 80 yards in eight plays to cap the third season in program history with at least 12 wins. They snapped a four-game bowl losing streak and won 12 of their final 13 games, the only loss after the opener coming to No. 4 Cincinnati in the American Athletic Conference championship game.

Houston coach Dana Holgorsen said this win was similar to "some other ones that we've had this year." "Just a bunch of guys that fight hard and win," Holgorsen said. "Basically, winning this game solidified this 2021 football team at the University of Houston as a great football team." The Tigers (6-7) went in the opposite direction at the end of coach Bryan Harsin's first season. They ended with five straight losses for the first time in 71 years and dropped their third bowl game in a row. Harsin was already looking ahead to, he hopes, better things. "Nobody's going to go in there and just hang their head and say, ‘Well, this is just how it is,' " Harsin said. "We're going to change it. We're going to fix it, and we're going to get better. "I mean, there is no Plan B. There's Plan A, and we're here to make this work." Game MVP Tune completed 26 of 40 passes for 283 yards and two touchdowns with an interception while also rushing for 43 yards. Nathaniel Dell caught 10 passes for 150 yards, while Alton McCaskill ran for 66 yards and caught a touchdown pass. - Houston/AP College Football
