Houston quarterback Clayton Tune leaped over a defender to score on a 13-yard run and the 24th-ranked Cougars escaped with 37-35 victory over UTSA in three overtimes Saturday. Per NCAA rules for a third overtime, Tune's winning run was a 2-point conversion. The Roadrunners were unable to match the score as their final pass floated out of bounds. Houston rallied from a 14-point deficit in the second half at the Alamadome to snap UTSA's 10-game home winning streak. After Tune scored on a 1-yard run and threw for the 2-point conversion in the second overtime, Roadrunners quarterback Frank Harris matched the output by running in the conversion after tossing a touchdown pass to De'Corian Clark.

Houston dominated the final quarter, maintaining possession for 10 minutes, 30 seconds in driving 77 yards on 18 plays. The drive ended with Bubba Baxa kicking a 35-yard field goal with 26 seconds remaining for a 24-21 lead. UTSA matched the feat in far less time, driving 55 yards in 23 seconds for a 37-yard field goal by Jared Sackett to force overtime. Baxa and Sackett kicked matching field goals in the first overtime. Harris completed 28 of 43 passes for 337 yards and three touchdowns and rushed for 63 yards and a score. Tune was 22 of 32 for 206 yards and three touchdowns and rushed for 51 yards and a TD. - Houston/AP College Football

Derek Parish discovered his strength at an early age. "I kind of had a feeling whenever you are 7 years old and your mom comes home with the groceries and you have to get all of them in one carry because you don't want to go back outside if you are playing a game or something," said Parish, the University of Houston's all-conference senior defensive end. His personal record? "Ten bags of groceries," Parish said with a laugh, adding, "with two-gallon milk jugs, eggs, bread. Think about that. You have some heavy stuff and some delicate stuff. You have to be able to grab them all." Years later, Parish is still doing the heavy lifting.

A video circulated on social media this offseason that showed Parish setting a personal best with a 425-pound power clean. He can back-squat 674 pounds. He can bench 425 pounds. All of that - not to mention he once ate 7 pounds of steak in one sitting - landed Parish on The Athletic's "Freaks List," a list of 100 players in college football that exhibit unique physical abilities. "It was humbling and an honor to be on that list," said Parish, who came in at No. 49. "No cockiness, but I wanted to be higher." - Houston Chronicle

With Alton McCaskill out for the season with an ACL tear, Ta'Zhawn Henry is "the guy" in the running back room, Coach Dana Holgorsen said. Henry has experience as an every-down back at Texas Tech and will be given as many rushing attempts as he can handle. During a recent videoconference with reporters, Henry said, "I feel like I'm more than a running back" and that he wants to be a more versatile weapon catching passes out of the backfield. - Houston Chronicle

For as long as he can remember, Nathaniel Dell has drawn attention on the football field. Before he would become a preseason All-America wide receiver at the University of Houston, young "Tank" was making defenders miss as a running back on the Little League fields in Daytona Beach, Fla. "When I get the ball in my hands, I'm comfortable, because I've been having the ball in my hands since I was 6 years old," Dell said Thursday during a videoconference with reporters. "I had everybody there wanting to see me play. I just made a lot of plays - the same as what I'm doing right now." Years later, Dell continues to draw a crowd and attention, especially from defensive coordinators whose job is to devise Saturday game plans to stop one of the nation's top returning receivers.

It was a futile effort last season as Dell produced one of the best seasons by a receiver in UH history: 90 catches, 1,329 yards and 12 touchdowns. "This year, after what I did last year, I'm going to get a lot of attention on the offense and have defenses trying to cover me from everywhere," Dell said. Offseason roster additions should take a lot of the pressure off UH to rely heavily on playing Dell at one of the outside receiver spots. Instead, coach Dana Holgorsen envisions Dell lining up in the slot - the space between the end of the offensive line and an outside receiver - and becoming an even bigger matchup problem for opposing defenses. "He's an elite inside receiver," Holgorsen said. "He's unguardable," quarterback Clayton Tune added. "He's really unguardable anywhere on the field, but especially in the slot." - Houston Chronicle

For the second year in a row, the Cougars must replace a high-NFL draft pick on the defensive line. With depth among the unit's strengths, the Cougars could be in position to soften the blow of losing Logan Hall, the No. 33 overall pick in the draft, at the three-technique defensive tackle. The options include Atlias Bell, whom defensive coordinator Doug Belk described as "a freaky athlete," Sedrick Williams and Latrell Bankston. Williams has been slowed the past two seasons by COVID-19 and a broken ankle. Bankston started five games at nose last season. - Houston Chronicle
