The Sophomore placed 5-of-6 punts inside the 20-yard line with one at the 1-yard line and one at the 7-yard line. Four of his six punts traveled 50-plus yards and averaged 48.7 yards on his six punts for a net of 47.2 yards. Three of his four kickoffs resulted in touchbacks and the other was fair caught. Do not give wide receiver Marquez Stevenson any additional motivation. Stevenson was coming off a rough game with one catch (and only three passes thrown to him) in a loss to BYU. Just how pumped was he Saturday? The eye black strips on his face read: "All On Me." "Last game I didn't have the performance I wanted," he said. "This week all I was thinking was I want to go out there...it's all on me." Stevenson was targeted 10 times Saturday, hauling in nine catches for 129 yards and the Nos. 20 and 21 touchdowns of his career. His 51-yard touchdown catch in the second quarter was vintage "Speedy" - one-on-one coverage against a safety, a move inside and a cloud of dust.

"He's one of those game-breaking type players," Tune said. "If I'm a defensive coordinator I have to know where No. 5 is at all times." Coach Holgorsen took the blame for the BYU game, saying "some of that was one me" for not moving Stevenson around to get him the ball depending on the coverage. "It wasn't going to happen two weeks in a row," Holgorsen said. Holgorsen added that he spoke with Stevenson earlier in the week about not getting frustrated or giving up when teams game plan around stopping him. Navy's Brigade of Midshipmen gave the University of Houston an earful during Saturday's game and, apparently, one text message after. "The cadets were talking a whole bunch of mess," UH linebacker Grant Stuard said after the 37-21 win. "One of them texted my phone somehow after the game." Asked if Navy possibly used the National Security Agency (NSA), which is located less than 30 minutes from Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium, to obtain his number, Stuard chuckled. "I don't know what they did," he said. Saturday's game was the first on the road for the Cougars during the coronavirus pandemic. The crowd was limited to the Brigade of Midshipmen, the student body that numbers about 4,400. "We haven't been in enemy territory yet, so that was fun for us," Stuard said. "We embraced that. We canceled the noise and just went out there and played." Stuard did not reveal what the text said. - Houston Chronicle

Clayton Tune threw for 316 yards and three touchdowns and Houston beat Navy 37-21 on Saturday. Dalen Morris completed a 60-yard touchdown pass to Ryan Mitchell to give Navy a 13-9 lead with 4:02 left before halftime. It was all Houston (2-1, 2-0 American Athletic Conference) from there as it went on to score four touchdowns in its next six possessions with the final drive used to kill the clock. Tune responded with a 51-yard scoring pass to Marquez Stevenson with 1:53 left before halftime as part of a 3-play, 79-yard drive. About midway through the third quarter, Kyle Porter scored from a yard out for a 23-13 Houston lead. The Cougars held Navy (3-3, 3-1) to 11 yards in six plays on the ensuing drive and forced a punt. Houston then used a 10-play, 77-yard drive that ended with a 33-yard touchdown pass from Tune to Porter for a 17-point advantage. Tune wrapped it up with 24-yard touchdown pass to Stevenson with 5:24 left to play. Morris threw for 206 yards with two touchdowns and an interception for Navy. - AP College Football

Stevenson had five receptions for 118 yards, including a 41-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter to put the game away. He added a 97-yard kickoff return for a touchdown in the third quarter after the Green Wave had closed to within three points. Stevenson turned in his ninth career game with at least 100 receiving yards and has 13 receptions of at least 40 yards since the start of the 2018 season, good for third nationally. - American Athletic Conference Football

Marquez Stevenson had a 41-yard touchdown reception and a 97-yard score on a kickoff return, and Houston rolled past Tulane 49-31 on Thursday night in its long-awaited opener. Houston (1-0, 1-0 American Athletic Conference) played its first game 53 days after the start of fall camp due to three games being called off due to opponents' COVID-19 problems. Clayton Tune was 20-of-33 passing for 319 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions for Houston. He also had one rushing score, and Stevenson caught five passes for 118 yards. The Cougars turned it over five times, four coming in the first half. Freshman quarterback Michael Pratt made his first career start for Tulane (2-2, 0-2). He passed for 141 yards and one touchdown. Tulane's defense scored on two of Houston's opening three drives. Macon Clark intercepted the fourth pass of the game and returned it 64 yards to open the scoring, and Jeffery Johnson recovered a fumble in the end zone to make it 14-7. KeSean Carter's college career started to take off in Texas Tech's 2019 season finale at Texas. Carter has picked up this season where he left off last season and had another good game Saturday against Texas. The Red Raiders' slot receiver caught seven passes for 77 yards and two touchdowns, a highlight for Tech in a 63-56 overtime loss at Jones AT&T Stadium. "I'm starting to see a lot of progress," Carter said. "I worked hard for this. (Strength and conditioning) Coach (Dave) Scholz has been helping me, and I'm progressing my game as I go through the season." Carter's touchdowns were for 13 yards in the first quarter and for 22 yards in the second quarter. The junior from The Woodlands sparked Tech's first offensive series with three catches for 43 yards, and he got the payoff when Alan Bowman fired a bullet pass to him over the middle for the touchdown. UH quarterback Clayton Tune was sharp in last year's season finale, throwing for 393 yards and a career-best four touchdowns in a 56-41 loss to Navy. Clayton Tune's No. 3 jersey underwent a minor alteration this summer. A "C" patch was sewn into the top right corner of his football jersey, identifying Tune as one of the University of Houston's team-elected captains for this season. "It means a lot," Tune, set to begin a season as the Cougars' starting quarterback for the first time, said Wednesday during a Zoom call with reporters. "I don't take it lightly. I think it's a testament of the work I've put in for guys to vote for me to be a captain. It's a great honor." It's not uncommon for a quarterback to be selected a captain, although it's not a given. Tune's selection after only nine career starts over the last two seasons shows how quickly he has taken a leadership role and earned the respect of teammates. Linebacker Grant Stuard will be the first UH player to ever wear No. 0 in a game after the NCAA's rule change that allows players to wear that number. Back in 1972, linebacker Bubba Broussard attempted to wear the game. A few days before the season opener, SWC director of officials Cliff Speegle informed head coach Bill Yeoman that only numbers 1 through 99 were allowed under NCAA rules, according to an account in the Chronicle. At the same time, linebacker Charles Evans had attempted to wear "00." Broussard instead wore No. 2 and Evans returned to his old No. 59. Stuard, a senior team captain, said he chose to wear No. 0 because it's the number of his favorite basketball player, Russell Westbrook. "Honestly, I always wanted to wear No. 0," Stuard said. "When 0 became available I just felt like that was for me." - Houston Chronicle
