  09/15/22 - Haynes KingrSr/2026, Georgia Tech, 6-3, 215 (DS#6 QB) + More +

Texas A&M head coach Jimbo Fisher is open to changing quarterbacks and the play-caller if it will jump-start the offense. The 24th-ranked Aggies have one of the country's worst offenses after two games. A&M ranks 100th in scoring (22.5 points per game), 101st in total offense (341.5 yards per game) and 114th in rushing (99.5 ypg). Sophomore quarterback Haynes King threw a pair of interceptions in a 31-0 victory over Sam Houston State. He was ineffective in last week's 17-14 loss to Appalachian State, completing 13 of 20 for 97 yards with no touchdown and no interceptions. He was sacked twice. "We possibly could [make a change]," Fisher said. "We'll evaluate everything this week. We'll evaluate every position this week." That includes Fisher relinquishing his play-calling duties. - Bryan/College Station Eagle

  09/10/22 - Dontae SmithrSr/2024, Georgia Tech, 5-09, 199 (DS#45 RB) + More +

Dontae Smith ran for 102 yards and three touchdowns, and Georgia Tech turned to its running game and a takeaway-savvy defense to snap a seven-game losing streak with a 35-17 victory over Western Carolina on Saturday night. The Yellow Jackets (1-1) forced four turnovers - interceptions by Derrik Allen, Myles Sims and Charlie Thomas and a fumble recovery by Aliyde Eley - and swarmed the FCS Catamounts (1-1) to hold them to just 118 yards in the second half. Georgia Tech, which finished with 243 yards rushing and 7.1-yards per game, had lost its last three games by a combined 141-10 score, leaving embattled coach Geoff Collins 9-26 entering the game.

But the Jackets scored on consecutive possessions in the first and second quarters and never trailed again. Western Carolina quarterback Carlos Davis, coming off a school record six TD passes and 433 yards passing in a win last week at Charleston Southern, finished with 233 yards on 18 of 27 passing. He constantly escaped with scrambles before getting knocked out of the game late in the third quarter on a hit by Eley. Cole Gonzales took charge of the offense and quickly threw an interception to Thomas. The loss dropped the Catamounts to 0-61 all-time against FBS competition and 0-33 against the Atlantic Coast Conference. - Georgia Tech/AP College Football

  09/03/22 - Haynes KingrSr/2026, Georgia Tech, 6-3, 215 (DS#6 QB) + More +

Haynes King threw for a career-high 364 yards and three long touchdowns to lead No. 6 Texas A&M to a 31-0 win over Sam Houston Saturday in a game that included an almost three-hour weather delay. "We've got a long way to go," Texas A&M coach Jimbo Fisher said. "We've got to get a lot better... just got to keep developing in the things we do." King, who was named the starter last week after beating out two others in camp, threw touchdown passes of 66, 63 and 43 yards in the opener for both teams.

King also threw two interceptions in an inconsistent performance in his return after breaking his leg in the second game last season. Ainias Smith had six receptions for a career-high 164 yards with two touchdowns and Devon Achane ran for a score to help Texas A&M to the victory. "On the defensive side, I felt like they played well," Smith said. "Sticking to the offensive side, we need to go ahead and execute a whole lot better.” The Aggies were up 17-0 at halftime when the game was suspended due to lightning in the area at 1 p.m. Neither team returned to the field after halftime and a message was posted on the video boards telling fans that the game was suspended and to seek shelter. - Texas A&M/AP College Football

  08/29/22 - Myles SimsrSr/2024, Georgia Tech, 6-3, 188 (DS#61 CB) + More +

2022 PRESEASON WUERFFEL TROPHY (COMMUNITY SERVICE) WATCHLIST: Myles Sims, Georgia Tech, Jr., DB,...Sims has dedicated his time and talents to a number of community service initiatives during his three years at Georgia Tech, including Habitat for Humanity and the Salvation Army. Perhaps most notably, shortly after receiving his bachelor's degree in business administration from Georgia Tech in May, Sims joined a group of 16 Georgia Tech student-athletes from across multiple sports to embark on Tech's fourth Jackets Without Borders international service trip. Returning after a two-year hiatus due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Jackets Without Borders returned to Puerto Rico in 2022 to continue to assist with rehabilitation following the devastating hurricanes that ravaged the island in 2017. Thanks in large part to Sims' efforts and leadership, the group was able to lay the entire foundation for a house in less than one week. - Georgia Tech Football

  08/29/22 - Kevin Harris IISr/2025, Georgia Tech, 6-3, 245 (DS#67 DE) + More +

High expectations attended Georgia Tech defensive end Kevin Harris, a transfer from Alabama, prior to last season. Harris' transfer was prompted after he did not see the field for the Crimson Tide in 2020, but he had also been a four-star prospect at Grayson High. He was rated the No. 123 player nationally in the 2019 class and the No. 15 player in Georgia (247Sports Composite). In the preseason last year, his one-on-one pass-rush battles with left tackle Devin Cochran also gave a picture of the quickness that Harris was bringing to the position. He was also included in The Athletic's annual list of college football freaks because of his uncommon strength (31 bench-press reps of 225 pounds) and explosiveness (39-inch vertical leap).

Once the season began, the awaited production did not materialize. In his first season on the field, Harris played behind starter Jordan Domineck and fellow backup Kyle Kennard at the rush end position. Appearing in all 12 games, he finished with six tackles. "I feel like there were a lot of things I could have improved on, those being my first couple snaps of real-game snaps," Harris said in an interview with The Atlanta Journal-Constitution on Aug. 6 at the team's media day. "I think I could have made some better adjustments last year, and I think this year you'll see a lot more production." - Atlanta Journal Constitution

  08/10/22 - Keion WhiterSr/2023, Georgia Tech, 6-5, 281 (DS#4 DT) + More +

The last time Keion White was healthy and playing football, it was at Old Dominion in 2019. A full-systems-go White contributing to a Georgia Tech defense that needs a boost has been a long time coming, but it seems that might finally be coming to fruition. "I'm 1,000% back," White said Saturday at Media Day. "I was getting to the point last year where I was just trying to get back on the field and feel comfortable being back on the field. Wasn't able to get to that point. But over the offseason I've done a lot of rehab, done a lot of training, done a lot of field work, and I'm at the point where I'm confident enough that I feel like I'm better than I was before I was injured. So I'm definitely 1,000% back." White played in the Yellow Jackets' final four games of last season, but wasn't fully healthy. He also didn't get to play in 2020, with Old Dominion forgoing the season because of COVID-19. He transitioned to defensive end in the spring of 2019 after playing two seasons at tight end.

So, now, White brings a unique perspective to Tech in two ways: he's a super senior, one of the older guys in the room, and can break down the game from the perspective of the offense and the defense. He also figures to play an important role on the defensive line, with starters Jordan Domineck (now at Arkansas) and Jared Ivey (now at Ole Miss) transferring, as the Jackets aim to bounce back from three consecutive three-win seasons. "I'm really excited about Keion," coach Geoff Collins said Saturday. "I think when he came to us a year-and-a-half ago, there was a lot of build-up and a lot of excitement. And unfortunately Keion had some injury things and wasn't ever 100% last year, but he is a tough, physical person. He's a leader in the locker room, and it's not a lot of rah-rah, it's not a lot of talk, but just his attitude, his demeanor, his seriousness, his focus, how he works every single day kind of permeates throughout our entire locker room and our entire organization." - Atlanta Journal Constitution

  08/10/22 - Ayinde EleyrSr/2023, Georgia Tech, 6-3, 230 (DS#46 ILB) + More +

The newest addition to Georgia Tech's collection of analysts has a particularly close connection with a member of the Yellow Jackets team. Former Alabama State coach Donald Hill-Eley is the father of Tech linebacker Ayinde Eley. Tech made the hire in July, bringing on Hill-Eley as an analyst for the offense. Hill-Eley was let go at Alabama State in November in the middle of his fourth season as head coach of the Hornets. He replaces Mike Gregory, who left Tech to become the offensive coordinator at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla. Hill-Eley brings a considerable amount of experience to the job. He has been coaching since 1991 and was a head coach at Morgan State 2002-13 and then at Alabama State 2017-21. His expertise is on offense. Eley is going into his final season with the Jackets after transferring from Maryland before the 2021 season. - Atlanta Journal Constitution

  08/05/22 - Dontae SmithrSr/2024, Georgia Tech, 5-09, 199 (DS#45 RB) + More +

Georgia Tech running back Dontae Smith was scrolling through Twitter on July 20 when he came upon something he didn't expect to see - his own name. That was the day he was named to the preseason watch list for the Doak Walker Award, given annually to the nation's top running back. "I'm on Twitter and I see it, and I'm like, 'Whoa," Smith said. If you're a returning starter at running back at a power-conference school, it's perhaps not a big deal. There are 75 running backs on the list (although somehow former Tech All-American Jahmyr Gibbs, now at Alabama, was omitted). But for Smith, who last season was a third-string running back behind Gibbs and Jordan Mason, it was a big deal to be recognized. "I'm extremely thankful," Smith said. "And I'm going to go out there and chase it and try to win that award. It is a motivation."

Smith, who ran for 378 yards last season and averaged a team-high 5.6 yards per carry, was bursting forth with optimism and confidence about the season ahead for him and his team, even as expectations for the Yellow Jackets are low in the wake of three consecutive three-win seasons. Smith poured out his belief at the ACC Kickoff in Charlotte two weeks ago. "We are going to win," Smith said. "Now, the realistic goal is, what bowl game? We want to make a bowl game, so we're going to have to win more games than we have been." - Atlanta Journal Constitution

  06/12/22 - Daniel CarsonrSr/2023, Georgia Tech, 6-3, 287 (DS#999 DT) + More +

In need of depth on the defensive line, Georgia Tech picked up a commitment from the transfer portal Saturday. Former Western Illinois defensive lineman Daniel Carson announced his commitment to the Yellow Jackets in a tweet. Out of high school in Independence, Mo., Carson was a three-star prospect in the 2018 class who signed with Texas over offers from Alabama, Miami and others.

At Texas, however, he played in four games in three seasons and transferred to Western Illinois in December 2020. Playing the FCS season in the spring of 2021 and again in the fall, Carson played in a total of 12 games. He started eight of the 12, including seven in the fall of 2021. In seven games last season, he was credited with 13 tackles, including two for loss. It would appear that Carson has two seasons of eligibility remaining. - Atlanta Journal Constitution

  06/09/22 - Aidan BirrrJr/2027, Georgia Tech, 6-1, 200 (DS#13 K) + More +

Georgia Tech incoming freshman kicker Aidan Birr will have to wait a year to earn a spot in the Yellow Jackets lineup. Birr revealed in a social media post Tuesday that he had suffered a torn ACL in April, and he added an image of his right leg following surgery. "Road to recovery starts today," Birr wrote. "I'm coming back 10x harder!" It's conceivable that Birr could be cleared for spring practice after the 2022 season.

After Birr signed with Tech in December, it was anticipated that he would compete with Jude Kelley and Gavin Stewart for the placekicking and kickoff jobs. A year ago, grad transfer Brent Cimaglia took field goals and extra points and Stewart handled kickoffs. Birr was named all-state in Texas as a junior, earned honorable-mention honors as a senior and was also ranked the No. 11 kicker in the class nationally (247Sports Composite). Last year, Stewart and Kelley were both 0-for-1 on field-goal tries. Stewart recorded 33 touchbacks on 55 kickoffs, a 61.2% touchback rate. It was the highest rate by a Tech kicker since Harrison Butker's 74% average in 2016. - Atlanta Journal Constitution

  05/19/22 - Jack CocorSr/2022, Georgia Tech, 6-2, 248 (DS#22 LS) + More +

The football journey continues for former Georgia Tech long snapper Jack Coco. Invited to the Green Bay Packers' rookie minicamp on a tryout basis, Coco was signed to an undrafted free-agent contract Tuesday. Coco, who arrived at Tech from Johns Creek High as a walk-on long snapper and offensive lineman and went on to earn a scholarship in his final season, beat considerable odds in signing a contract, as it's rare for teams to sign tryout players to the roster.

Coco beat out another long snapper that Green Bay had invited to the May 6-7 camp. He becomes the second long snapper on the roster along with Steven Wirtel, who played nine games for the team last season in his first year on an active NFL roster. Remarkably, Coco actually didn't long snap in 2021 for the Yellow Jackets, as he concentrated on playing tight end, a position for which he lost 30 pounds in a matter of months to play. He had long snapped for place kicks in 30 games from 2018-20. - Atlanta Journal Constitution
