Ellington completed 29 of 37 passes for 362 yards and no interceptions. His passer rating was 205.2. Furman's Darren Grainger completed 16 of 25 for 323 yards with four TDs and no interceptions. His passer rating was 225.3. Both teams rushed for more than 200 yards and passed for more than 300 as they combined for 1,104 yards of offense. Grainger threw his first two TD passes and Devin Wynn scored on the ground as the Paladins, ranked No. 11 in the FCS coaches' poll, took a 20-3 lead with 12:55 remaining in the second quarter.

Tra Barnett had an 18-yard TD run and Ellington threw his first TD pass of the game as Georgia State (2-0) closed to within 20-17 at halftime. Ellington threw three more TD passes in the third quarter and the Panthers led 38-28 heading to the fourth.   WEEK 1 SUN BELT OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Dan Ellington, Georgia State (Sr., QB, Olive Branch, Miss.),...Georgia State senior quarterback Dan Ellington threw two touchdown passes and ran for the game-clinching score in the fourth quarter to lead the Panthers to a monumental 38-30 victory at Tennessee, the program's first-ever win over a Power Five conference opponent. The senior signal caller passed for 139 yards on 11 completions and rushed for 61 yards.

After completing just one of his first nine attempts, Ellington recovered to go 10-for-13 the rest of the way, including touchdown strikes of 17 yards to wide receiver Cornelius McCoy in the second quarter and six yards to tight end Aubry Payne in the third quarter. Ellington led the Panthers on two 75-yard touchdown drives in the second half to give GSU a 28-23 lead with nine minutes left, and then he scampered for a spectacular 22-yard touchdown run with 4:45 left that essentially clinched the win. He faked a handoff and then eluded several defenders before running into the left corner of the end zone. - Sun Belt Football

Dan Ellington threw two touchdown passes and ran for a third score as 26-point underdog Georgia State upset Tennessee 38-30 on Saturday in one of the first stunners of the college football season. Georgia State (1-0) beat a Power Five opponent for the first time since this Sun Belt Conference school launched its program in 2010. The Panthers' closest call before this had come in 2016, when they lost 23-17 to Wisconsin after leading in the fourth quarter. Tennessee (0-1) suffered one of the more embarrassing setbacks in its history, the latest blow for a storied program attempting to bounce back from two straight losing seasons.

Georgia State was coming off a 2-10 season in which it had lost its last seven games. Only one of those seven losses was decided by less than two touchdowns. But the Panthers outplayed and outworked Tennessee on Saturday. The hard times for Tennessee were evident from a look at the Neyland Stadium stands. Although the announced attendance was 85,503, thousands of fans apparently left at halftime and many others headed for shaded areas, leaving plenty of sections of the 102,455-seat facility virtually empty as Tennessee attempted its comeback. Tra Barnett put Georgia State ahead for good 28-23 when he raced untouched around the right side with 8:56 remaining. Barnett ended up rushing for 95 yards on 21 carries. - AP College Football

Darren Grainger ran for one touchdown and threw for another as Furman crushed Charleston Southern, 46-13 in the season-opener Saturday. Grainger, a redshirt freshman, played in four games and started against Elon a year ago before earning the starting job. Picked to finish second in the Southern Conference and ranked in two different Football Championship Subdivision polls, Furman kicked off its season at home for the first time since 2015 with its first-ever meeting with Charleston Southern.

The loss spoiled the head coaching debut of Charleston Southern's Autry Denson, who became just the fifth head coach in Buccaneers history in January. Jamey Chadwell, who guided CSU past The Citadel in the 2013 opener, is the only coach to win his debut at the school. Grainger capped a six-play, 46-yard drive by scoring from the 4 for the game's first touchdown. Devin Abrams and Devin Wynn each had first-half touchdown runs as the Paladins held a 24-6 advantage at intermission. - AP College Football

Clemson co-offensive coordinator and running backs coach Tony Elliott has been around a number of impressive backs during his time with the Tigers. But he has never had a back who is as natural at catching the ball out of the backfield as freshman Michel Dukes. "I think Mikey's got the most natural ball skills of any guy that I've had, including (Andre) Ellington," Elliott said following Friday's practice. "It's just easy for him. You can see it."

Dukes and fellow freshman Chez Mellusi arrived on campus this summer, and the two are already turning heads. They haven't different playing styles, but both have made plays throughout fall camp. "They compliment each other very, very well. I think we all know Chez is the bigger guy. He's got really, really good straight line speed. He doesn't mess around. He's a one-cut guy, understands that no cut is the best cut," Elliott said. "Where Mikey is an elusive guy that catches the ball extremely well. Probably has the best ball skills of anybody I've ever had here at Clemson. So I think they're going to compliment each other that way." - The State
