  Dan Ellington threw two touchdown passes and Tra Barnett ran for 128 yards and a score as Georgia State cruised to a 28-15 victory over South Alabama on Saturday. Diego Guajardo's 34-yard field goal was the only score in the first quarter as South Alabama took a 3-0 lead. The Panthers (7-4, 4-3 Sun Belt Conference) took the lead for good in the second quarter on Destin Coates' 6-yard TD run and Ellington's 5-yard TD toss to Devin Gentry. Barnett's 2-yard TD run was the only score in the third quarter and stretched Georgia State's lead to 21-3. Ellington's 4-yard scoring toss to Roger Carter pushed the Panthers' lead to 28-3 just 7 seconds into the final period. Desmond Trotter had two fourth-quarter TD passes for the Jaguars (1-10, 0-7) -- a 20-yarder to Jalen Wayne and a 52-yarder to Jalen Tolbert. Ellington finished 21-of-28 passing for 208 yards with one interception for Georgia State. Carter finished with seven catches for 87 yards.   Darrien Grainger threw a touchdown pass and ran for a score, Travis Blackshear had a 49-yard pick-6 and Furman held NAIA-member Point University to 91 total yards in a 64-7 win on Saturday. The Paladins (8-4, 5-1 Southern Conference) will learn their FCS playoff postseason fate on Sunday. The Skyhawks gained 1 rushing yard in 35 attempts against a defense that forced three turnovers. Grainger's 9-yard TD run capped the opening drive and he hit Ryan DeLuca on a 19-yard TD pass on Furman's next possession. After Blackshear's interception return, two field goals by Grayson Atkins and two rushing TDS, the Paladins led 43-7 at halftime.   2019 GULF SOUTH CONFERENCE DEFENSIVE FRESHMAN OF THE YEAR (COACHES): Xavier Robinson, Shorter,...Robinson, an inside linebacker, led the Hawks with 79 tackles, which put him third in the GSC. Robinson also had 8.5 tackles for loss, 2.0 sacks, and a forced fumble. His best outing came against West Georgia, where he racked up 13 sacks, 3.0 tackles for loss, and a sack.   Not only did Georgia State have its four-game winning streak broken last week, the Panthers lost standout quarterback Dan Ellington for an undetermined length of time.

Ellington suffered a sprained right knee in a non-contact injury in the final minute of the first half of Saturdays 45-31 loss to Louisiana-Monroe. Ellington is out for this weeks important Sun Belt Conference game against Appalachian State. - AJC.com

  OCT 28/WEEK 9 SUN BELT OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Tra Barnett, Georgia State (Senior, Running Back, Elberton, Ga.),...Georgia State senior running back, Tra Barnett, rushed for 242 yards and two touchdowns and broke Georgia State's single-game, season and career rushing records to lead the Panthers to bowl eligibility with their fourth straight victory, 52-33 over Troy. The senior from Elberton, Ga., became Georgia State's career rushing leader with 1,631 yards, and he took sole possession of the GSU career record with 15 career rushing touchdowns. With 928 yards on the year, Barnett also broke the Georgia State single-season record.

Barnett's 242 yards shattered the GSU single-game mark of 201 yards, breaking the record with a 41-yard touchdown run on 4th-and-1 with one minute to play to seal the victory. His outburst helped the Panthers rush for a team-record 390 yards against a Troy defense that entered the game ranked No. 11 in the nation in rushing defense, allowing just 93.3 yards per game. Barnett has topped the 100-yard mark in a GSU-record four straight games and now has a season-record five 100-yard games in 2019 and six in his career, which equals the GSU career mark. He now leads the Sun Belt and ranks ninth in FBS at 116.0 rushing yards per game. - Sun Belt Football
