  Narii Gaither rushed for a career-high 245 yards and two touchdowns, quarterback Bailey Fisher ran for three more and Gardner-Webb made its first-ever FCS playoff appearance memorable with a 52-41 win over Eastern Kentucky on Saturday night. The Runnin' Bulldogs (7-5) led 31-27 at half and took the game over in the third quarter when Fisher hit T.J. Luther for a 12-yard touchdown pass and ran in from 12 and 16 yards for a 52-27 lead. It's the most points they scored this season since the opener against an Division II playoff qualifer. Now the Big South automatic qualifier goes to fifth-seeded William & Mary next Saturday. Gardner-Webb lost in the NAIA championship 30 years ago and became FCS eligible 20 years ago. In the two years the Bulldogs won Big South titles, the league didn't have an automatic berth in the playoffs.

Eastern Kentucky (7-5) had a chance to mount a comeback as Parker McKinney, a Payton Award finalist, threw his fourth touchdown pass early in the fourth quarter but on the next possession was picked off in the end zone. His fifth touchdown pass came with 1:02 to play and Gardner-Webb recovered the on-side kick. The Colonels, who got the inaugural ASUN-WAC berth, were making their 22nd playoff appearance since 1978 but have not won a playoff game since 1994. The Bulldogs ran for 405 yards as Fisher had 88 on seven keepers and Jayden Brown had 83 on 12 with a touchdown. Parker finished 37 of 57 for a career-high 454 yards.   2022 BIG SOUTH OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR: Bailey Fisher, QB, R-Sr., Gardner-Webb,...Fisher (Clayton, Ga.) was a four-time Big South Offensive Player of the Week honoree during the season, and is a finalist for the Stats Perform FCS Walter Payton Offensive Player of the Year Award. He finished the regular-season 220-of-339 passing for a league-best 64.9 completion percentage, with 2,755 passing yards (250.45 per game) and 18 touchdowns, and rushed for another eight scores. Fisher averaged 263.7 yards of offense, and had two 400-yard offensive games -- including 403 against current No. 23 FBS Coastal Carolina. Fisher tied a Big South record with three consecutive games with 350+ yards of offense, tied a Big South single-game record with six touchdowns responsible for against Bryant (five passing, one rushing), as well as a then-record for most passing yards in a conference game with 408 at Charleston Southern.

He directed an offense that averaged 40.8 points and 520.0 yards per game in the Runnin' Bulldogs' 5-0 Big South Championship run, and posted a league-best 17 total touchdowns against conference foes (13 passing, four rushing), along with a Big South-best 179.19 efficiency rating in the league season. He was a College Football Performance Award weekly Honorable Mention twice this season, had five games with a passing touchdown and rushing score, and had the third-most rushing TDs in the conference in 2022. Fisher is Gardner-Webb's first Offensive Player of the Year honoree since 2016, and he collected seven first-place votes and 24 points in the voting, ahead of North Carolina A&T running back Bhayshul Tuten (one first-place vote and 19 points) and Bryant quarterback Zevi Eckhaus (one first-place vote and 13 points). - Big South Football

  2022 BIG SOUTH DEFENSIVE FRESHMAN OF THE YEAR: Ty Anderson, LB, Fr., Gardner-Webb,...Ty Anderson (Thomasville, Ga.) is the third Gardner-Webb player to be voted as Big South's Defensive Freshman of the Year in the award's five-year history. He played all 11 games and was GWU's top tackler among freshman with 33 stops. Anderson had 4.5 tackles-for-loss and 1.5 sacks, two quarterback pressures and recorded a 45-yard pick-six interception return at Marshall. He was the Big South Freshman of the Week and honorable mention National Freshman of the Week on Oct. 3. He averaged 7.1 yards per carry in recording his fifth 100-yard game of the season. Gaither scored on runs of two and 20 yards, the second being a sprint that put GWU ahead, 31-14. He helped limit the Aggies to just 87 yards rushing on 22 attempts, with 32 yards in losses after team sacks and TFL.   Narii Gaither and Jayden Brown each had two touchdown runs and Gardner-Webb beat North Carolina A&T 38-17 on Saturday in a battle between the Big South Conference's top teams and regular season title. Gardner-Webb (6-5, 5-0) has won the last two in the series and also clinched the conference's automatic bid into the Division I-FCS playoffs. Brown had 93 yards rushing and Gaither 90 yards on the ground. Brown's 19-yard scoring run gave the Bulldogs a 17-14 lead in the second quarter and Gaither's 20-yarder made it 31-14 early in the third. Jalen Fowler threw for 253 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions for the Aggies. Bhayshul Tuten had 108 yards rushing with a 61-yard touchdown run. North Carolina A&T (7-4, 4-1), which joins the Colonial Athletic Association next season, will need an at-large bid to make its first postseason appearance since 2016. - AP College Football

  NOV 14 BIG SOUTH OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Gardner-Webb quarterback Bailey Fisher (Clayton, Ga.) completed 30-of-38 passes for 366 yards and three touchdowns, while rushing for 48 yards and a score in leading the Runnin' Bulldogs to a 42-35 victory over Campbell in the North Carolina East/West BBQ Bowl. He was a perfect 10-of-10 on short throws while going 10-of-11 on mid-range passes to help GWU collect 33 first downs and 583 yards of offense to remain in first-place in the Big South standings.
