Fresno State senior defensive end David Perales brought intensity to the game against San Jose State on Saturday night where the Bulldogs broke their four-game losing streak in the second Mountain West (MW) game, claiming a 17-10 victory over the Spartans. Many Bulldogs broke their career-high statistics that night. Aside from Perales setting a new career high of four quarterback sacks in a single game and five tackles for a loss (TFL), Logan Fife threw a career high of 230 passing yards for Fresno State.

This week, Perales has been named Mountain West Defensive Player of the Week, earning the first weekly honor by the conference for the Bulldogs this year. The last time a Bulldog earned this title was on Nov. 1, 2021, by Evan Williams. "[Perales' performance] was dominating, I thought. It seemed like he was around the quarterback all night long," said Fresno State Football Head Coach Jeff Tedford. This season, Perales leads the team with eight TFL and 6.5 sacks. In his Fresno State career, Perales has 17.5 sacks and is one sack away from breaking the Top 10 in Bulldog Football program history for career sacks. - The Collegian

A week to week injury designation will not be this week for Fresno State quarterback Jake Haener and several other Bulldogs who sat out a rough loss at UConn. Haener as well as safety Evan Williams, linebacker Ray Scott and right tackle Dontae Bull remain out and will not play in the Mountain West Conference opener at Boise State. "There's a couple more in there, too," coach Jeff Tedford said. "They're all week to week. None of them had to have major surgery, so they won't be out for the whole season, but any time you have those types of things it's going to take a few weeks to recover. It just depends how fast they recover from their injuries. We'll get them back at some time. Hopefully, sooner than later." Haener, who had his right ankle in a boot last week, was injured in the third quarter of the Bulldogs' loss at USC. He could return for an Oct. 15 Homecoming game against San Jose State, when Fresno State will retire jersey No. 15 in honor of record-setting wideout Davante Adams. Or, more likely perhaps, the following week when the Bulldogs open a three-game stretch against struggling teams on the road at New Mexico. - Fresno Bee

E.J. Warner threw two touchdown passes and Layton Jordan returned an interception 41 yards to lead Temple to a 28-0 win over Massachusetts on Saturday. Warner, the son of Hall of Famer Kurt Warner, got his first win as a starter, going 11 of 22 for 173 yards. He opened the scoring with an 11-yard strike to Ian Stewart and capped it a 50-yard connection with Adonicas Sanders.

Jordan's pick-6 highlight the first shutout for the Owls (2-2) since 2016 when they beat Tulane 31-0. Temple backup quarter Quincy Patterson completed all three of his passes and led the Owls in rushing with 10 carries for 52 yards and made it 14-0 early in the second half with a 3-yard touchdown run that capped an 80-yard drive. The Minutemen used three quarterbacks, who combined to go 11 of 26 for 80 yards passing and two interceptions with four sacks. UMass was just 3 of 17 on third down. - Temple/AP College Football

Fresno State quarterback Jake Haener suffered a high ankle sprain when he was knocked out of the Bulldogs' 45-17 loss Saturday night at No. 7 USC, and it is not a season-ending injury. Haener, who was injured in the third quarter when sacked by Trojans defensive tackle Solomon Byrd, had X-rays at the stadium before returning to the Bulldogs bench on crutches later in the third quarter. "I think he caught my leg and rolled it and I heard a little pop," Haener said, making his way off the field after the game. "We have to get back and take a look at it, but it's not broken so it doesn't require surgery or anything like that, so that's good news. High ankle sprains sometimes can take a little bit longer so we'll just have to see how it goes," coach Jeff Tedford said. - Fresno Bee
