Mikey Keene passed for 219 yards and three touchdowns and RJ Harvey rushed for 151 yards and a score to lead No. 25 UCF to a 35-28 win over Memphis on Saturday. UCF (7-2, 4-1 American Athletic Conference) handed Memphis (4-5, 2-4) its fourth consecutive loss, the Tigers' longest losing streak since 2013. Keene was pressed into his first start of the season after quarterback John Rhys Plumlee suffered an injury in last weekend's upset of nationally ranked Cincinnati. Plumlee sustained a possible concussion in UCF's 25-21 victory over the Bearcats. "I haven't been playing consistently for a little bit, but nonetheless we prevailed," Keene said. "I've been preparing like I was the starter, but it's always a little bit different coming out there. We had to fight through and that's what championship teams do." Keene rallied the Knights, who were held scoreless in the third quarter, by tossing two fourth-quarter touchdowns. The first was a 13-yard pass to Kobe Hudson early in the fourth quarter for a 28-21 UCF lead.

Hudson's second TD reception of the game came after the Knights stopped the Tigers on downs at the UCF 39 in the closing minutes of the third quarter. Keene added his third TD pass - and second of the quarter - with 4:58 left by finding Javon Baker on a perfect strike to the left corner of the end zone for a 35-21 advantage. "Mikey stepped in and handled himself like a champ like we thought he would," said UCF coach Gus Malzahn. Malzahn said Plumlee, an Ole Miss transfer, could have played, but hadn't practiced much until late in the week. "I just felt real strong that we needed to go with Mikey and give (Plumlee) a little more time," Malzahn said. "It was just a gut instinct." Keene, who completed 22 of 28 passes, was aided by a UCF defense that ranks No. 1 nationally in red zone defense. The Knights held Memphis scoreless on three trips inside the UCF 10-yard line in the first half. - UCF/AP College Football

Jake Haener threw three touchdown passes, including a 37-yarder to Nikko Remigio with 56 seconds remaining, to rally Fresno State to a 32-28 victory over San Diego State on Saturday night. Jalen Mayden scored on a 28-yard run in the first quarter to give San Diego State a 7-3 lead. Mayden's 26-yard scoring strike to Kenan Christon and his 1-yard touchdown run left the Aztecs leading 21-10 at halftime. Jesse Matthews teamed up with Mayden for a 7-yard touchdown to put the Aztecs up 28-10, but Haener hit Zane Pope for an 8-yard score on the final play of the third quarter to get Fresno State (4-4, 3-1 Mountain West Conference) within 11 points.

Jordan Mims' 3-yard touchdown run capped an 11-play, 80-yard drive and the Bulldogs trailed 28-25 with 69 seconds left to play after Haener and Pope connected on a 2-point conversion. Carlton Johnson picked off Mayden with 44 seconds to go to wrap up the win. Haener completed 35 of 46 passes for 402 yards with two interceptions for Fresno State. Pope hauled in 11 passes for 151 yards, while Remigio totaled 126 yards on 10 catches. Mayden had 291 yards on 19-of-24 passing with two interceptions for San Diego State (4-4, 2-2). He also had a team-high 43 yards on eight carries. - Fresno State/AP College Football

Fife scored from 2-yards out in the first quarter to stake the Bulldogs (2-4, 2-1) to a 10-3 lead, then hit Jalen Moreno-Cropper for a 75-yard touchdown before scampering 30 yards for a score to make it 27-6 in the third. Jordan Mims had 26 carries for 165 yards and a touchdown to lead a Fresno State ground game that amassed 285 yards on 50 carries. Fife completed 19 of 29 passes for 225 yards with an interception and Moreno-Cropper had nine catches for 158 yards. New Mexico (2-6, 0-4) had just 138 yards of offense.   Fresno State senior defensive end David Perales brought intensity to the game against San Jose State on Saturday night where the Bulldogs broke their four-game losing streak in the second Mountain West (MW) game, claiming a 17-10 victory over the Spartans. Many Bulldogs broke their career-high statistics that night. Aside from Perales setting a new career high of four quarterback sacks in a single game and five tackles for a loss (TFL), Logan Fife threw a career high of 230 passing yards for Fresno State.

This week, Perales has been named Mountain West Defensive Player of the Week, earning the first weekly honor by the conference for the Bulldogs this year. The last time a Bulldog earned this title was on Nov. 1, 2021, by Evan Williams. "[Perales' performance] was dominating, I thought. It seemed like he was around the quarterback all night long," said Fresno State Football Head Coach Jeff Tedford. This season, Perales leads the team with eight TFL and 6.5 sacks. In his Fresno State career, Perales has 17.5 sacks and is one sack away from breaking the Top 10 in Bulldog Football program history for career sacks. - The Collegian

A week to week injury designation will not be this week for Fresno State quarterback Jake Haener and several other Bulldogs who sat out a rough loss at UConn. Haener as well as safety Evan Williams, linebacker Ray Scott and right tackle Dontae Bull remain out and will not play in the Mountain West Conference opener at Boise State. "There's a couple more in there, too," coach Jeff Tedford said. "They're all week to week. None of them had to have major surgery, so they won't be out for the whole season, but any time you have those types of things it's going to take a few weeks to recover. It just depends how fast they recover from their injuries. We'll get them back at some time. Hopefully, sooner than later." Haener, who had his right ankle in a boot last week, was injured in the third quarter of the Bulldogs' loss at USC. He could return for an Oct. 15 Homecoming game against San Jose State, when Fresno State will retire jersey No. 15 in honor of record-setting wideout Davante Adams. Or, more likely perhaps, the following week when the Bulldogs open a three-game stretch against struggling teams on the road at New Mexico. - Fresno Bee

Fresno State quarterback Jake Haener suffered a high ankle sprain when he was knocked out of the Bulldogs' 45-17 loss Saturday night at No. 7 USC, and it is not a season-ending injury. Haener, who was injured in the third quarter when sacked by Trojans defensive tackle Solomon Byrd, had X-rays at the stadium before returning to the Bulldogs bench on crutches later in the third quarter. "I think he caught my leg and rolled it and I heard a little pop," Haener said, making his way off the field after the game. "We have to get back and take a look at it, but it's not broken so it doesn't require surgery or anything like that, so that's good news. High ankle sprains sometimes can take a little bit longer so we'll just have to see how it goes," coach Jeff Tedford said. - Fresno Bee

A new season and a new staff was supposed to equal a fresh start for Korey Foreman. But through two crucial weeks of USC's preseason camp, the former No. 1 overall recruit has barely had the chance to get started. An undisclosed injury has kept Foreman sidelined since last week. Before that, he missed time for what USC coach Lincoln Riley called "a prior commitment." Altogether, he's sat out most of the Trojans' camp so far - after missing the start of spring practice with an injury too - leaving minimal opportunities for him to make any sort of impression on USC's staff ahead of the season. "Is that a concern, Korey missing that? Sure," Riley said on Tuesday. "But I want to make the point, it's not because it's Korey, it's because it's a player on the USC football team." Few other USC players, though, arrived with anywhere near equal hype to Foreman, whose signing was seen as such a watershed moment for USC's football program that it was commemorated on a campus billboard. After a frustrating freshman year that saw him used only sparingly, this season is a crucial one for the former five-star recruit and his trajectory under Riley. - Los Angeles Times
