  08/11/22 - Jack Miller IIIrJr/2026, Florida, 6-3, 210 (DS#999 QB) + More +

Ohio State transfer quarterback Jack Miller drew praise Tuesday for his showing so far in Florida football fall camp. Head coach Billy Napier said that projected starting quarterback Anthony Richardson had been accurate and processing information well through the first week of camp. But Napier also pointed out that Miller has made strides since the spring. "Very pleased with Jack," Napier said Tuesday. "Yesterday in particular, we gave him a few reps with the first group just as a healthy experience for him. I thought he did some really good things, so you know, in this setting, at quarterback. "You're dependent on the players around you know, the offensive line, the tight ends and running backs, receivers. Jack's very capable, you know, and I would say this going all the way back to spring. He's moved our team."

A four-star Class of 2020 recruit from Scottsdale, Ariz., Miller transferred after C.J. Stroud won the starting job with the Buckeyes last fall and emerged as one of the nation's best quarterbacks. "The spring game, he threw a couple interceptions and all that, but he's consistently made the right decision," Napier said. "He's got arm talent. He's accurate, and he's a good athlete. So I think we made a really good decision there. Realize that he is a freshman, right? And he has four years to play." - Gainesville Sun

  08/09/22 - *Gervon DexterJr/2023, Florida, 6-6, 318 (DS#6 DT) + More +

The start of training camp saw players relocating to a team hotel, which meant Gervon Dexter had to say goodbye, temporarily, to his 13-week-old son, Gervon Jr. "That was probably one of my saddest days leaving him," said Florida's hulking defensive lineman. "I can't even explain how good it's been for me being a father. "I'm sure some of you guys know if you have kids, it's not about you anymore, it's about him now. Everything I do now is trying to set his life up for the better." Dexter lost his father, Gerald, in April 2020 at age 50. That was months before the five-star recruit played his first college game. The player's locker features a framed photo of his dad.

While Dexter is a draft-eligible junior with early-round potential, his rawness still shows. Through 25 games and 11 starts at Florida, he has 2.5 sacks and 5.5 tackles for loss. With third-round pick Zach Carter moving on to the Bengals, Dexter needs to ramp up his production on the defensive interior, shifting between tackle and strongside end. An opposing SEC coach told The Athletic in May that Dexter "looks like he was made in a lab" at 6-foot-6 and 310 pounds. But that coach said Dexter's struggles with pad level help offensive linemen move him "two gaps away from where he's supposed to be." - The Athletic

Growing up near the Louisiana-Mississippi border in Greensburg, La. (population 1,018), new Florida offensive lineman O'Cyrus Torrence wasn't a hardcore SEC football fan. "I watched football, but I never thought too much about where I would play," Torrence said. "I just always kind of liked it. Towards the end of my high school years, I wanted to play SEC ball at LSU, but it kind of didn't pan out for me." Instead, Torrence wound up at Louisiana, where he developed into an all-Sun Belt conference standout under head coach Billy Napier and offensive line coach Rob Sale. When the opportunity came to follow Napier and Sale to Florida, Torrence didn't hesitate, transferring to UF. Torrence will suit up for the Gators this fall with two years of eligibility remaining. - Gainesville Sun

  08/01/22 - Harrison BaileyrSr/2026, Florida, 6-5, 230 (DS#44 QB) + More +

After the first day of UNLV football preseason practice, sophomore quarterback Harrison Bailey (6-5, 225) admitted he was a bit "shaky" and made a few mistakes. But that was to be expected as the Rebels began to prepare for their Aug. 27 season opener against Idaho State. Coming off a 2-10 record last season, third-year UNLV head coach Marcus Arroyo cramming a lot of football into a short period of time. He is looking for vast improvement. Bailey's focus is to build chemistry with his new teammates after transferring from Tennessee. He embraces the challenge. "When the quarterback speaks, everybody listens," he said. "Being that vocal leader can take this team to the next level. That's one of the things I've been working on." Junior Doug Brumfield and sophomore Cameron Friel are in competition with Bailey for the starting spot.

In two seasons at Tennessee, Bailey started three games, completed 51 of 75 passes for 594 yards, four touchdowns and two interceptions. More was expected of him after he was an Elite 11 finalist in 2019 following a great high schools career at Marietta High School, where he threw for 11,716 yards to rank fourth in Georgia history and become one of just five Georgia players to surpass 10,000 career passing yards, joining Trevor Lawrence (13,902), Deshaun Watson (13,077), Jake Fromm (12,745) and K'Hari Lane (10,217) - Las Vegas Review

Wisconsin coach Paul Chryst didn't say much at the podium Wednesday, but he did praise quarterback Graham Mertz's progress as a leader. "I've appreciated the way that Graham has approached this offseason," Chryst said. "He's taken ownership of the things he needs to do and does a great job of communicating and working with the rest of the players. "I think a good leader shows you how to lead by example but also how you can help others be the best that they can be. I've seen him do that." - Lincoln Journal Star

Graham Mertz studied history earlier this summer, Wisconsin football history. His teachers: Former UW quarterbacks Scott Tolzien, who started a total of 26 games in 2009 and 2010; and Brooks Bollinger, who started a total of 42 games from 1999 through 2002. "The coolest part of them is that both of them wanted to start like a quarterback fraternity," Mertz said Wednesday on Day 2 of the Big Ten preseason meetings. "That is one thing I really want to do when I leave here is be connected to the guys younger than me." Mertz has 20 starts on his UW résumé, seven in the COVID-affected 2020 season and 13 last season.

The Badgers are 13-7 in those 20 games and Mertz will be the first to tell you he needs to make more plays and commit fewer turnovers. According to Mertz, he was able to meet with Tolzien for nearly two hours. He chatted less formally with Bollinger throughout Braelon Allen's charity softball game in Fond du Lac. "Their biggest thing was: 'Whatever you need, whenever you need it, hit us up,'" Mertz said. "The biggest thing was that they wanted to get to know me and I wanted to get to know them. It was great." - Journal Sentinel

  07/26/22 - *Anthony RichardsonrSo/2023, Florida, 6-4, 244 (DS#3 QB) + More +

After last year's loss to Missouri, the Gators made a change. Former head coach and noted Tiger antagonist Dan Mullen was let go and Billy Napier was hired in his place. At his first media days in charge, Napier said he was excited to get started in Gainesville. "This group has embraced the work," Napier said. "I'm proud of our team. This team is not scared. They're tough, they love to compete. When you put the ball down, they're about it. I'm excited about training camp." Napier and the Gators will benefit from a solid quarterback in 2022, as Anthony Richardson is projected to be one of the top players in the nation at that position. The coach said he has been impressed by Richardson. "He has tremendous ability," Napier said. "He's working hard to develop, improve as a person, as a leader. He's working hard to increase his football IQ. His skill is developing. I think he's prime to have a phenomenal year." - Columbia Daily Tribune

  07/25/22 - *Anthony RichardsonrSo/2023, Florida, 6-4, 244 (DS#3 QB) + More +

In case you didn't keep tabs on Anthony Richardson's offseason, these were the pivotal moments for Florida's quarterback: He recovered from knee surgery, seized the starting job during spring practice, was cited for driving faster than 100 mph, uncorked a 73-yard throw at the Manning Passing Academy and, more recently, rebranded by un-branding. It's all part of a progression that first-year head coach Billy Napier contends is more important than arm strength or mechanics. "I think he's working hard on his leadership, his maturity, really growing up as a person, improving his character," Napier said Wednesday at SEC Media Days. "When you start talking about quarterback, we're not just talking about physical ability. We're talking about awareness. We're talking about the ability to influence the other people around you. To change the room when you walk in because of your credibility, your example."

A third-year sophomore with limited-but-dazzling experience, Richardson repeatedly has heard from Napier on the finer points of commanding a team. "I can't be careless anymore," he said. "Like people say, I'm the face of the program, so I need to act like it. I talk to Coach Napier almost every day, and he tells me I've got to move like a head coach. "There's a lot on my plate. There's a lot at stake for me and my family and the team, the university. So I have to move smart. I have to do the right thing every single day." - The Athletic
