Jalen Hampton rushed for a 11-yard touchdown in the second overtime and Elon beat Richmond 30-27 on Saturday. Elon kicker Skyler Davis forced overtime with a 42-yard field goal with 37 seconds left in regulation. Then Elon scored on the first play of overtime when Matthew McKay threw it across the field to a wide open Johncarlos Miller II. Richmond answered with a 19-yard score from Reece Udinski to Jakob Herres. Jake Larson put Richmond ahead in the second overtime with a 47-yard field goal before Hampton's run up the middle. McKay passed for 322 yards and three touchdowns for Elon (4-1, 2-0 Colonial Athletic Association). Hampton rushed 15 times for 93 yards and a score. Bryson Daughtry caught four passes for 134 yards and a TD. Udinski attempted 58 passes for Richmond (3-2, 1-1). He completed 42 for 383 yards and two touchdowns. Jalen Hampton ran for two of his three touchdowns in the fourth quarter as Elon erased a 15-point deficit after three quarters to earn a 35-31 win over William & Mary in the Colonial Athletic Association opener for both schools Saturday. Both teams came into the game with 3-0 records. Darius Wilson threw all three of his touchdown passes in the first half as the Tribe took a 28-10 lead into intermission. Matthew McKay hit Bryson Daughtry from 18 yards out with 5:06 left in the third quarter to pull the Phoenix within two scores, 28-16, but William & Mary answered with a 46-yard field goal by Ethan Chang with 2:53 left to make it 31-16.

Hampton capped a 10-play, 63-yard drive with a 2-yard plunge to make it 31-23 and D.J. Moyer wedged in from the 1 with 4:43 left to make it 31-29, but the Phoenix could not connect on a 2-point pass attempt to tie the score. After Elon forced a three-and-out, it marched 84 yards in seven plays, taking the lead on Hampton's 15-yard run with 1:07 left. Hampton finished with 145 yards on 28 carries to lead Elon (3-1, 1-0). McKay was 16-of-28 passing for 207 yards and a touchdown and ran 14 times for 85 yards. Matthew McKay threw for 260 yards and three touchdowns, Jalen Hampton rushed for 204 yards and Elon held off Gardner-Webb 30-24 on Saturday. Elon led 20-3 early in the second quarter before Gardner-Webb reeled off 21 straight points for a four-point lead at the break. The Phoenix had the only touchdown of the third quarter, a 27-yard connection between McKay and Jordan Bonner, and Skyler Davis added a 41-yard field goal early in the fourth for a 30-24 lead. Davis also opened the scoring with a 45-yard field goal and he made it 13-3 with a 51-yarder. Bryson Daughtry had a team-high 88 yards receiving on just three grabs for Elon (2-1). Bonner and DJ Moyer each only made one catch — both going for 20-plus-yard touchdowns. Bailey Fisher threw for 218 yards and two touchdowns for Gardner-Webb (1-2). - AP College Football

Matthew McKay threw for 230 yards and three touchdowns and Elon stifled Wofford 26-0 on Saturday. McKay threw scores of 3 and 6 yards to Jackson Parham and connected on a 27-yarder to Jordan Bonner for Elon (1-1). The Terriers managed just 128 yards of offense. Wofford now has been outscored 57-0 and collected just 358 yards of offense in its first two games. Wofford hadn't been shut out since the 2016 season when it was blanked three times. It was the 40th meeting between the two programs in a series that now has been played for a century. Wofford (0-2) owns the series advantage 28-12. - AP College Football

2022 PRESEASON STATS PERFORM FCS THIRD TEAM ALL-AMERICAN: DB - Cole Coleman, 5-10, 193, senior, Elon,...A two-time all-conference player, Coleman was named first team All-CAA last year after leading Elon's opportunistic defense with 71 tackles. He added 3.5 tackles for loss and a sack, while ranking No. 26 in the nation in forced fumbles with three. Coleman also had three pass break-ups, an interception and a blocked kick.

Arguably, Coleman's best game came against William & Mary when he had 10 tackles, a forced fumble, and interception and a blocked kick. He added eight tackles in the win at ranked Richmond. He led Elon to a third-place finish in CAA Football a year ago and is a centerpiece of a defense that returns nine starters in 2022. Coleman has started 30 games during his career at Elon and has 246 career tackles to go with six passes defended and two interceptions. He had a career-high 84 tackles in 2019. - Elon Football

He tied the school record with a 52-yarder against Towson and then added another 50-yarder in that game. He finished 253-of-397 passing for 2,924 yards, ending with 17 touchdowns and five interceptions. He never threw more than one interception in a game and was responsible for at least three touchdowns (passing/rushing) in a game four times. He ranked third in the CAA in both statistics. He caught 10 passes for 106 yards against William & Mary and added a career-best 122 receptions, on six catches, in a win over New Hampshire. Parham made his presence felt immediately, opening the season with seven catches for 99 yards against Wofford and had 91 yards receiving in the team's win over No. 25 Rhode Island to end the campaign. Jaylan Thomas ran for 135 yards on 22 carries and two touchdowns and Elon beat FCS No. 25-ranked Rhode Island 43-28 on Saturday. Thomas' 15-yard scoring run with 2:15 left in the first quarter made it 14-7 and Elon peeled away from there. Elon (6-5, 5-3 Colonial Athletic Association) finishes with its first winning record since the 2018 team went 6-5. It's also the first five-win conference effort since 2017. Elon closed the year with two consecutive wins and defeated two teams that were ranked at the time of play. The Phoenix also beat then No. 21-ranked Richmond 20-7 in October. Rhode Island's (7-4, 4-4) two-game win streak came to an end. In a season of runs, the Rams started with five straight wins, followed with three straight defeats then won back-to-back. McKinley Witherspoon ran for a pair of scores and Davis Cheek threw for one and Elon never trailed in its 37-14 win against Towson on Saturday. Witherspoon ran for 1-yard score for a 7-0 lead before Skyler Davis made a career-long, 52-yard field goal late in the first quarter. Davis added a 28-yarder with 10:29 before halftime for a 13-0 lead. Vincent Amendola got Towson on the board with a 5-yard scoring run at the end of a nine-play, 73-yard drive five minutes later. But the Phoenix (5-5, 4-3 Colonial Athletic Association) countered with a 10-play, 75-yard drive that ended with Witherspoon carrying it in from 1 and a 20-7 margin with 2:07 before halftime. Jerry Howard Jr. ran for 126 yards on 17 carries for the Tigers. Towson (4-6, 3-4) has lost back-to-back games and three of its last four. - AP College Football
