  SEPT 27 BIG SKY OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Eastern Washington's Eric Barriere helped EWU eclipse the 50-point mark for the third-straight game as the senior quarterback threw for 518 yards and four touchdowns. Barriere became the first FCS quarterback to throw for 500 or more yards in back-to-back games since Cornell's Jeff Mathews did it in 2011. The EWU QB also surpassed the 10,000-yard career passing mark, which moves him into the Big Sky Top 10 for the category. The Offensive Player of the Week honor is Barriere's eighth of his prolific career, including three times in 2021, three times in 2020-21 and twice in 2019.   Eric Barriere threw for 518 yards and four touchdown to lead FCS No. 6 Eastern Washington to a 50-21 victory over Southern Utah on Saturday night. Barriere surpassed 10,000 career yards passing in the first quarter, and now has 10,437. He completed 30 of 48 passes and added 28 yards on the ground for 546 yards of offense. He had a school-record 562 yards of total offense in last week's win over Western Illinois. The Eagles (4-0, 1-0 Big Sky Conference) are 4-0 for the first time since 1997. Barriere threw two TD passes to Efton Chism III, who made eight catches for a career-high 147 yards receiving. Talolo Limu-Jones had seven receptions for a career-best 175 yards. Dennis Merritt ran for three touchdowns and had 58 yards rushing on 18 carries for the Eagles, who finished with 673 yards of offense. Barriere threw all six of his touchdown passes in the first half, including three that went for more than 50 yards. He completed 31 of 45 passes, adding 20 rushing yards to a school-record 562 yards of total offense.

  Eric Barriere set a FCS record for passing yards in a half while Eastern Washington set a school record for points in a half and the Eagles rolled to a 62-56 win over Western Illinois on Saturday. Barriere threw for 487 of his 542 yards on 24-of-30 passing with six touchdowns in the first half as the Eagles took a 55-21 lead. His yardage is second in school history, seven behind a Gage Gubrud game in 2017. Eastern Washington (3-0) led 62-28 early in the third quarter and Barriere departed before the fourth quarter but Western Illinois (0-3) scored four straight touchdowns so Barriere had to return to close out the game.

Barriere hit Johnny Edwards over the top for a 76-yard score on the last play of the first quarter to give the Eagles at 28-21 lead. The teams combined for 512 yards. But while the visitors kept going - scoring on eight of nine possessions - the Leathernecks only had 34 yards in the second quarter. Dennis Merritt had a receiving touchdown and two rushing, including a 73-yarder in the third quarter, finishing with 150 yards. Edwards had three catches for 126 yards and two touchdowns and Freddie Roberson six for 118 and a TD. Western Illinois' Connor Sampson was 31 for 46 for 425 yards and four touchdowns, two to Dennis Houston, who had 11 catches for 175 yards plus a rushing TD. Daniel Bender had three catches for 102 yards and a TD.   Eric Barriere threw for two touchdowns and ran for a third in the first half and Eastern Washington cruised to a 56-7 win over Division II Central Washington on Saturday. The Eagles (2-0) had 388 yards by intermission, holding the Wildcats (1-1) to 87, 65 coming on their opening drive that cut the EWU lead to 8-7. Dennis Merritt had back-to-back scores in the first half, hauling in a 14-yard pass followed by a 4-yard run. Barriere opened the scoring with a 6-yard run and capped the first half connecting with Conner Crist. Ty Graham preceded that touchdown with a 43-yard pick-6. It was 46-7 at halftime. Barriere finished 20 of 31 for 264 yards including a third touchdown pass, Merritt had 120 yards on 10 carries and 12 different players caught a pass as the Eagles finished with 558 yards.   SEPT 6 BIG SKY FOOTBALL CO-OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: EWU's Eric Barriere and UC Davis' Hunter Rodrigues were named Co-Offensive Players of the Week, Montana's Marcus Welnel earned Defensive Player of the Week accolades, and UC Davis' Isaiah Gomez and Montana's Brian Buschini were selected as Co-Special Teams Players of the Week. On the offensive side of the ball, Barriere and Rodrigues each led their teams to an FBS win as both quarterbacks passed for over 300 yards.

Barriere tossed three touchdowns to go along with his 374 yards passing against UNLV, while adding 32 yards on the ground to earn his 11th career game with over 400 yards of total offense. Rodrigues connected on 28 of 35 passes for 80% completion rate, which tops the FCS, while throwing for 311 yards and a score to lead UC Davis past Tulsa.   Eric Barriere threw for 374 yards and three touchdowns - including a pair of first-down scoring strikes in each overtime - and Eastern Washington escaped with a 35-33 double-overtime victory over UNLV in a season opener on Thursday night. It was the fourth time in ten years that the FCS Eagles upset an FBS opponent and they overcame three turnovers and three missed field goals - one on the final play in regulation - to do it.

EWU led 20-6 with 1:10 remaining in the third quarter after Dennis Merritt's 1-yard TD run. Daniel Gutierrez kicked a 47-yard field goal 1:20 into the fourth quarter and added a 51-yarder after a Barriere interception to pull the Rebels within 20-12. The Eagles lost a fumble on the ensuing kickoff and Charles Williams scored on a 16-yard run. UNLV added a two-point conversion to tie the game at 20 with 8:03 left to play.   Former Boise State defensive end Robert Cooper wasn't in the transfer portal long. The former three-star recruit announced last Friday that he was transferring. On Wednesday, he announced on Twitter that he's verbally committed to Eastern Washington. The 6-foot-5, 250-pound native of Spanaway, Washington, is heading closer to home. Eastern Washington's campus in Cheney is about a 4.5-hour drive from his hometown.   Eastern Washington quarterback Eric Barriere, Sacred Heart running back Julius Chestnut and VMI receiver Jakob Herres are among the Walter Payton Award finalists highlighting The Associated Press FCS All-America team released Wednesday. The Championship Subdivision’s spring season, pushed back nearly six months because of the pandemic, will conclude Sunday with the national title game between No. 2-seeded Sam Houston and top-seeded South Dakota State in Frisco, Texas. The two biggest awards in Division I football’s second tier will be handed out Saturday. The Payton award goes to the player of the year and the Buck Buchanan Award honors the top defensive player in the FCS. The AP’s All-America first team includes five of the 16 Payton award finalists and 10 of the 18 Buchanan finalists.
