2022 PRESEASON WUERFFEL TROPHY (COMMUNITY SERVICE) WATCHLIST: DeWayne Carter, Duke, Jr., DL,...Carter has volunteered his time working with Habitat for Humanity building houses, participated in Duke's Reading with the Blue Devils program and is a consistent tutor at KIPP Durham College Preparatory School as well as Durham Public School's IGNITE. In addition, he has stepped up to be a team accountability leader and serves as a First Year ACTION Mentor, guiding freshman student-athletes through the adjustment of college life.

A member of Duke's United Black Athletes organization, Carter is responsible for the group's social media page, creating awareness about important dates, events and opportunities for the program. The 6-3, 298-pound Pickerington, Ohio, native, has been an instrumental piece to the Blue Devils' defense during his tenure. In 26 career games, he has compiled 50 tackles and 10.5 tackles for loss. Carter has also recorded 5.5 sacks and three pass breakups, while adding six quarterback pressures and four forced fumbles. - Duke Football

  08/16/22 - Jordan MooreSr/2025, Duke + More +

With Duke's starting quarterback position battle still unsettled, one obvious thing from the first two weeks of practice is Jordan Moore will impact the offense one way or another. Moore continues to split practice time with fellow sophomore quarterback Riley Leonard working with the first and second team. But there are also times when the two are on the field together since Moore is also catching passes as a wide receiver, giving Duke another way to take advantage of his ability to make tacklers miss and his breakaway speed. Mike Elko, Duke's first-year head coach, has yet to decide if Moore or Leonard will start when the Blue Devils open their season Sept. 2 against Temple at Wallace Wade Stadium.

But even when that choice is made, it's far from final. "However this thing shakes out," Elko said on Aug. 5 in his only press conference since fall practice started, "there'll be internal competition during the year, too. Like, we never want to be a program that gets stagnant. I think that the best way you stop that from happening is you have internal competition always. So I don't imagine that it'll really change much other than one guy will go out there first." At the same time, Duke needs as many playmakers on the field as possible. Winless in ACC play during the final season of David Cutcliffe's coaching tenure last season, the Blue Devils will enter the season riding a 13-game ACC losing streak that dates back to 2020. The 6-foot, 195-pound Moore, whom Duke has not made available for interviews this month, routinely makes plays in practice worthy of him being an important part of Duke's plans. Last season, he played in 10 games as a reserve. He ran for three touchdowns while averaging a healthy 5.02 yards per carry (221 yards on 44 attempts). That included a 40-yard run in Duke's 48-17 loss at Virginia Tech and a 38-yard run when Duke lost 31-28 at Charlotte. - Herald Sun

Carter is also a tutor for KIPP Durham College Prep and Durham Public School's Ignite to help students go beyond extracurricular community service by participating in structured activities of reflection and analysis. In addition, Carter is an active member of Duke's United Black Athletes organization and Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and served on the NCAA Division I Football Student-Athlete Connection Group this past season. He is also a volunteer coach for the little league baseball team at First Calvary Baptist Church. - Duke Football

  08/12/22 - Chance LytlerSr/2023, Duke + More +

An imposing figure at 6-foot-7 and 329 pounds with a full beard and long golden hair down to his shoulders, Chance Lytle stands out among Duke's offensive lineman. That's true on the field, where he's battling for a starting position, and off, where he can grab a microphone and belt out Italian opera music. The Blue Devils were treated to the latter Sunday night during a team meal when Lytle went a capella to sing a few lines, in Italian, from Andrea Bocelli's "Con te partiro." After hearing other players sing not nearly as well, and knowing Lytle received a degree in music and voice performance from Colorado before transferring to Duke this year, some of the Blue Devils chanted and pounded the table to get Lytle up and signing.

When he finished, everyone leaped from their seats to cheer wildly. "He goes up there and I have no clue what the name of the song was," Duke linebacker Dorian Mausi said Tuesday. "But I'm like ooooh snaap! He got that on for sure." On Monday night, Duke posted a TikTock video of Lytle's performance and it quickly made its way around the Internet. Non-opera fans might recognize the song from the end of the 2008 film, "Step Brothers," where actor Will Farrell sang a version. Lytle, with Colorado appearances in such operas as "The Marriage of Figaro" and "Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street" in his background, loved entertaining his team teammates and is getting accustomed to the attention. - Herald Sun

As Mike Elko and his staff start to build something good for Duke defense that was among the nation's worst last season, a big man in the middle up front is a great place to start. Defensive tackle DeWayne Carter shined while the Blue Devils, as a group, struggled during the 3-9 season that precipitated the end of David Cutcliffe's 14-season tenure as their head coach. Elko arrived last November from Texas A&M, where as defensive coordinator the Aggies rated No. 14 nationally by allowing 327.5 yards per game and No. 3 nationally in points allowed per game (15.9).

Duke, meanwhile, allowed more yards per game than any of the 130 Football Bowl Subdivision teams at 517.6 yards per game and finished at No. 127 by allowing 39.8 points per game. Despite that, Carter put together a solid season that brought him third-team All-ACC honors, giving Elko someone he can count upon this season. "DeWayne's got a lot of explosion, a lot of twitch," Elko said. "He can play in the run and pass game. He's got pass rush values every down at defensive tackle." The raw stats show Carter led the ACC in forced fumbles (four) while recording 7.5 tackles for loss, including 4.5 sacks. - Herald Sun

  08/06/22 - Maalik MurphyrSo/2027, Duke + More +

Freshman Texas quarterback Maalik Murphy and redshirt sophomore wide receiver Troy Omeire returned to the practice field healthy this week. Both players dealt with injuries throughout spring ball. Coach Steve Sarkisian is more than excited to get Murphy and Omeire back on the field. Murphy is entering his first fall camp as a member of the Longhorns. He was a four-star recruit in the 2022 class with eye-catching arm talent. Murphy fell behind in the quarterback battle after being limited in spring practice with an ankle injury. The return of Omeire is long awaited news for Texas faithful. He was all the talk of the 2020 preseason before injuries stuck and kept him on the sidelines for the last two years. - Austin American Statesman
