  Coy Williams and Dylan Sparks each ran for 99 yards and Davidson beat Dayton 24-23 on Saturday to clinch the Pioneer League's automatic bid into the FCS playoffs. Tyreece White blocked Sam Webster's 40-yard field goal attempt with 5:03 remaining to help seal it for the Wildcats. Davidson (8-3, 6-2) and Dayton (8-3, 6-2) entered trailing St. Thomas (Minn.), which finished the league 8-0. It's just the second season for the Tommies at the Division I level and they're ineligible for the playoffs.

Williams had a 3-yard touchdown run in the first quarter and his 75-yard burst up the middle and into the end zone tied the game 17-17 with 7:19 remaining in the third quarter. Jayden Waddell's 35-yard touchdown pass to Maxwell Weaver stretched the Wildcats' lead to 24-17 about four minutes later. Shane Hamm ran for a 17-yard touchdown to end a long scoring drive for Dayton that capped the scoring with 14:18 remaining, but Sam Webster missed the PAT.   Dylan Sparks ran 3 yards to score for Davidson in the second overtime and the Wildcats defeated Stetson 56-48 on Saturday. After Sparks' score, Luke Durkin threw to Max Weaver for a two-point conversion before Stetson (3-5, 1-4 Pioneer League) failed to score on its possession. Stetson's Brady Meitz had a career-high six touchdown passes with his 30-yarder to Michael Carley with 54 seconds left in regulation tying the game at 41-all. Both teams scored touchdowns in the first overtime.

Trailing 34-31 entering the fourth quarter, Durkin hit Lucas Raber with a 24-yard TD pass and Caden Bonoffski added a 38-yard field goal. Durkin was 7-for-12 passing for 169 yards and two scores along with an interception. Mark McCurdy rushed for 111 yards on 10 carries, including a 66-yard score. Sparks had 97 yards rushing with two touchdowns and Coy Williams 71 yards and two scores, including Davidson's first overtime touchdown. The Wildcats (7-2, 5-1) finished with 350 yards rushing. LB, Lookout Mountain, Tennessee),...Tessman picked off two passes as Davidson's defense posted its first shutout since 2019 in a 31-0 PFL victory against Butler, Saturday. His first interception came early in the third quarter at the Davidson 24-yard line as Butler attempted a deep pass following a Davidson scoring drive. Tessman's second pick was early in the fourth quarter and stopped a Butler drive at midfield.   SEPT 12 PIONEER FOOTBALL SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK: TJ Magee, Davidson, (Fr., S, Denham Springs, Louisiana),...Magee had a 97-yard kickoff return for a touchdown in the second quarter of Davidson's 37-17 victory against Barton, Saturday. He finished the day with 145 yards on three kick returns, leading the Wildcats in all-purpose yardage. The 97-yard return is one of just four kick returns of 97-plus yards in the FCS this season. Magee returned the opening kickoff 18 yards, then posted the 97-yard return and capped his day on special teams with a 30-yard return on Barton's fourth, and final, kickoff. In his regular defensive role, he also had a tackle and a fourth-quarter interception to help seal the Wildcats' home victory. - Pioneer League Football

  SEPT 19 PIONEER FOOTBALL OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Aaron Maione, Davidson, (So., SLOT, Glenside, Pennsylvania),...Maione scored three touchdowns in Davidson's 56-6 victory against St. Andrews, Saturday. He became the second PFL player to score three touchdowns in a game this season, catching two touchdown passes and running for another. He had a touchdown catch and run to account for both of Davidson's scores in the second quarter. Maione needed just three receptions for 29 yards and three carries for 60 yards to score his three TDs.   Dylan Sparks carried it 16 times for a career-high 180 yards and Davidson rushed for 498 yards in a 31-0 victory over Butler on Saturday. It was Davidson's first shutout since 2019. Coy Williams added 19 rushes for 109 yards for Davidson (4-1, 2-0 Pioneer), which has won four straight. Aaron Maione had two runs and two touchdowns, and Jayden Waddell added 60 yards and a score. Caden Bonoffski provided the only scoring in the first half when he capped the game's opening drive with a 44-yard field goal. Davidson scored 14 points in each of the final two quarters.   Freshman TJ Magee set the tone when he returned the opening kickoff 89 yards for a touchdown and Davidson breezed to a 56-24 victory over Presbyterian on Saturday night. Jayden Waddell completed 6 of 7 passes for 189 yards and a touchdown - a 67-yard second-quarter strike to Clarence Freeman IV - for Davidson (3-1) in a Pioneer Football League opener. Waddell also rushed 16 times for 105 yards, including a 37-yard scoring sprint in the fourth quarter. Wildcats backup quarterback Luke Durkin threw a 30-yard touchdown pass to Mark McCurdy in the final minute of the first half to give Davidson a 35-10 lead. Coy Williams rushed for two touchdowns for the Wildcats. Dylan Sparks and McCurdy also ran for scores. Ten different players carried the ball as Davidson piled up 396 yards on the ground. Freshman Nate Hayden completed 16 of 26 passes for 196 yards and a touchdown with two interceptions for Presbyterian (1-3).   Coy Williams and Aaron Malone both scored two of Davidson's six rushing touchdowns and the Wildcats breezed to a 56-6 victory over NAIA-member St. Andrews on Saturday. Williams opened the scoring with a 70-yard touchdown run and added a 1-yard TD plunge as Davidson (2-1) grabbed a 28-0 first-quarter lead. Jayden Waddell scored the fourth TD of the period on a 61-yard run. Malone had a 5-yard touchdown run and caught a 6-yard scoring strike from Waddell to push the Wildcats' advantage to 42-6 at halftime. Malone scored on a 6-yard run and Mari Adams ran it in from 16 yards out in the third quarter to cap the scoring for Davidson. Fifteen different Wildcats carried the ball and piled up 414 yards.   Davidson College, which won a share of the last two Pioneer Football League titles, is the choice to win the league's 2022 title in the league's Preseason Coaches' Poll, voted by each of the league's head coaches. Davidson, which won its first PFL title in Spring 2021 followed that by winning a share of the Fall 2021 title. The Wildcats received eight of the 11 first-place votes and received a second-place vote from two other coaches. San Diego, which shared the Fall 2021 title with Davidson, was picked to finish second and received the three remaining first-place votes, and was picked second on five other ballots. Davidson received 98 of the maximum 100 points possible, with coaches unable to vote for their own team. San Diego followed with 91 points – making those two teams the clear frontrunners.   Louis Colosimo threw a pair of touchdowns and Aris Hilliard ran for two scores and Davidson throttled St. Thomas (MN) 42-15 on Saturday to stay atop the Pioneer Football League standings. Davidson (7-1, 6-0), with a seven-game win streak, sits ahead of San Diego which entered the day at 5-1 in the PFL. The Wildcats beat San Diego 28-16 earlier this season. Coy Williams got Davidson going with a 37-yard scoring run on an eight-play, 75-yard opening game drive for a 7-0 lead. Before the close of the first quarter, Colosimo threw a 3-yard score to Jackson Sherrard to end a 15-play, 72-yard that lasted just a little more than eight minutes. Colosimo was 9-for-10 passing for 141 yards, Dylan Sparks ran for 122 yards on 22 carries and a touchdown, Hilliard ran for 89 yards and Williams 76.
