  11/07/20 - Alex FontenotrSr/2023, Colorado, 5-11, 200 (DS#999 RB) + More +

Colorado could be without one of its best offensive players for a while. On Monday, it was revealed running back Alex Fontenot, the Buffaloes' leading rusher in 2019, will miss Saturday's season opener against UCLA (5 p.m., TV: ESPN2) with an undisclosed injury. On Tuesday, head coach Karl Dorrell said there's no guarantee the 6-foot, 205-pound junior from Richmond, Tex., will play this season. Fontenot was injured in practice late last week. "It's unfortunate that he's dealing with an issue but it's not surgical, which is a good thing," Dorrell said. "He's gonna have to heal up. This is a short season and no one's losing eligibility this year, so we hope to have him back at some point this year and if not, then we'll have him ready to go next year in the fall." As a first-year starter in 2019, Fontenot led the Buffs with 874 yards and five touchdowns on the ground, while handling 57.6 percent of the running back carries. He also caught 27 passes for 122 yards. "He's obviously very disappointed," Dorrell said. "He was counting on himself coming back from a pretty good sophomore year, coming in and playing this year." - Daily Camera

  10/27/20 - Daniel AriasrSr/2023, Colorado, 6-4, 208 (DS#76 WR) + More +

Two seasons into his college career, Daniel Arias has proven to be one of the Buffs' top players on special teams, while flashing his potential as a receiver. Entering his junior year, the 6-foot-4, 205-pound Arias could be poised for a breakout season, and he said being around former teammates Laviska Shenault and Tony Brown, who are now both in the NFL, has helped him progress. "I've built my confidence way more this season, just being around Viska and Tony and just getting their advice and talking to them," Arias said. "Learning from them and learning what they do and how they do it has built my confidence. This season I feel like I'm ready. I feel like this is my time to shine and I'm going to do what I can to help my team win. That's my goal." Arias, who has four catches for 99 yards and two touchdowns in his career, said extra film and technique work has made a difference this year. - Daily Camera

  10/12/20 - Mustafa JohnsonrSr/2022, Colorado, 6-0, 288 (DS#64 DT) + More +

Recent defensive line coaches at Colorado have had to deal with a lack of depth, experience and high-end talent. Chris Wilson doesn't have those issues, but the Buffaloes' first-year defensive line coach is hoping intense competition makes one of CU's strengths even better. Hired in February, Wilson took over a group that returns three starters - senior Mustafa Johnson, junior Terrance Lang and sophomore Jalen Sami - along with several others who gained valuable experience in 2019. All of them will fight for starting jobs as the Buffs gear up for the Nov. 7 opener against UCLA. "We've got really good talent here. My job is to make sure we develop them. I like the group we've got, I like their competitive edge; they're working really hard every day. The biggest thing is how we're transitioning from where we were a year ago to now. There's a lot of good carryover. I'm excited about the group."

Mustafa Johnson has 13 sacks in his career with Colorado. Leading the group is Johnson, who has been a two-year starter and one of the most disruptive defensive linemen at CU in the past decade. Although he dealt with some injuries last season, Johnson, a former junior college transfer, has 107 tackles, 13 sacks and 23 tackles for loss in his first two seasons with the Buffs. Wilson compared Johnson to Brandon Graham, a 2016 All-Pro that Wilson coached with the Philadelphia Eagles. "I'm not saying he's Brandon Graham, but he's got that kind of diversity," said Wilson, who coached the Buffs' defensive line from 2000-04 under head coach Gary Barnett. "He can play end, he can play tackle, he can line up at the nose. He gives you a lot of position flexibility." - Daily Camera

  10/07/20 - Kavosiey SmokerSr/2024, Colorado, 5-10, 202 (DS#85 RB) + More +

University of Kentucky running back Kavosiey Smoke will likely miss at least a couple weeks with a rib injury. Smoke rushed for 29 yards on five carries against Ole Miss on Saturday. He suffered the injury as a result of a horse-collar tackle during the 42-41 loss, Stoops said. Smoke usually is listed alongside Chris Rodriguez with an "OR" designation as the backup to senior A.J. Rose. He was absent from this week's depth chart. "He broke a rib, or cartilage in his ribs, or whatever," Stoops said. "It's a pretty painful injury. It just depends how long he'll be out. We'll see how the pain goes." Rodriguez was the only backup listed behind Rose this week, but redshirt freshman Travis Tisdale or true freshman JuTahn McClain could get carries against the Bulldogs on Saturday. McClain has appeared on special teams in both games; Tisdale, who scored his first career touchdown against last season, returned a kickoff for 13 yards against Ole Miss. - Herald Leader

  10/05/20 - Kavosiey SmokerSr/2024, Colorado, 5-10, 202 (DS#85 RB) + More +

Kentucky coach Mark Stoops says reserve running back Kavosiey Smoke is out "a couple of weeks" after breaking a rib during Saturday's overtime home loss to Mississippi. Smoke was not listed on the Wildcats' depth chart for Saturday's Southeastern Conference home game against Mississippi State (1-1, 1-1). Stoops revealed the sophomore was injured on a horse-collar tackle during his weekly news conference and added, "We'll see how the pain goes" in determining the length of his absence. Smoke rushed five times for 29 yards before halftime, including a 19-yard run to the Rebels' 6 to set up the Wildcats' first touchdown, but did not return in the 42-41 loss. Known for his explosives, Smoke is Kentucky's No. 4 rusher with 91 yards and a TD at Auburn on 12 carries for the Wildcats (0-2, 0-2 SEC). - AP College Football

  09/12/20 - Travis JayrSr/2025, Colorado, 6-2, 205 (DS#999 SS) + More +

This weekend has been a long time coming for Florida State safety Travis Jay. Jay, a redshirt freshman, came to FSU with high expectations. Hailing from just down the road in Madison, Jay grew up in the heart of Seminole country. He signed with FSU as a one of the highest ranked players in the 2019 recruiting class but was forced to watch from the sidelines his freshman year due to an academic issue. After waiting for so long it's finally time for Jay to don the garnet and gold and take the field Saturday at 3:30 p.m. against Georgia Tech at Doak Campbell Stadium. "I'm excited to see him play a game," FSU coach Mike Norvell said. "He's a very natural athlete, a lot of different things that he can do, with and without the ball in his hands which is obviously why you're seeing him lined up in returner roles." Jay is listed as a co-starter at both the free safety (sophomore Renardo Green) and the buck safety (junior Jaiden Lars-Woodbey) position in defensive coordinator Adam Fuller's defense. - Times Union

  09/03/20 - Kavosiey SmokerSr/2024, Colorado, 5-10, 202 (DS#85 RB) + More +

He proved that he was more than just a spectacular name last season, rushing for 616 yards and six touchdowns on 101 carries. He figures again to be listed the immediate backup to A.J. Rose along with fellow sophomore Chris Rodriguez, with whom he split time last year, but Smoke has the speed to be a bigger factor if situations call for it. He rushed for at least 50 yards in six different games last year, including a career-best 95 yards on 15 carries in a romp at Vanderbilt that saw him finish with a career-high 123 all-purpose yards. - Herald Leader

  07/31/20 - Nate LandmanrSr/2022, Colorado, 6-3, 238 (DS#12 ILB) + More +

Arguably CU's best player, Landman will fill a key role in the Buffaloes having success during the 2020 season - if there is a season. The coronavirus pandemic has created doubt about the season even happening, but Landman is gearing up to be a better version of himself just in case. "Just being more consistent with my game (is a focus)," he said. "Towards the beginning of the (2019) season, I struggled with some missed tackles and pass coverage. It was never the mental game that affected me; sometimes it was the physical game, whether it was sore shoulders or anything like that."

Landman has recorded 260 tackles, 21 tackles for loss, six sacks and three interceptions over the past two seasons. He's a big hitter with a nose for the ball, which was evident during his brief appearance late in the 2017 season. Where Landman has taken perhaps the biggest strides is in leadership. He embraced a leadership role last season and is intent on becoming even better in that regard this year. "(I'm working on) being more accessible to the team and being that kind of leader to where I can lead by example and if guys are hurting they can come to me, and being a guy that someone can lean on," he said. "I want to help create more leaders on the team. I don't think leaders always have to be seniors. Helping create a freshman leader that can lead that freshman class and someone they can look to for advice." - Daily Camera

Pursell has helped run clinics with the Global Down Syndrom Foundation over the summer the past few years, with the exception of this summer due to the COVID-19 pandemic. With Buff Hugs, he has visited patients at Children's Hospital Colorado and helped with a craft party the Buffs help there last fall.
