Clemson's national championship football program was flagged for eight secondary NCAA violations during a yearlong period from July 2018 through this past June. The school's athletic department released a summary of the infractions Wednesday. None of the violations were considered major and all issues about the penalties have been resolved, according to the school. In all, Clemson self-reported 14 violations in the year ending on June 30.

Names of athletes, coaches or staffers involved in the infractions were not in the summary provided to The Associated Press by Clemson. The month and day when the violation occurred was blacked out in the report. The football violations reported by the school included a homeowner paying a player above the going rate for work around the home on three separate occasions. Two violations involved players on social media in a promotional capacity. - AP College Football

The two faces of college football spent time together this summer at the Manning Passing Academy in Louisiana about five months after they faced off in the national title game. There was no trash talk about what happened in January, or talk of what might happen if the two teams face off again this season. Instead, there was a mutual respect the two share for one another as the biggest stars in the game. "Obviously our faith is something that we're connected (through), so we talked about that a lot," Lawrence said. "He's a great dude."

Both players have been open about their faith and how it has helped them. Tagovailoa told AL.com that his Christianity led him to Alabama, while Lawrence stated during his freshman season that his faith allows him to stay calm under pressure. "We're in similar situations and it's always good and beneficial to talk to guys that are in similar situations and see how they do things and how their life is," Lawrence said. "We got to talk and it was just cool talking to him. We're going through the same things. And just hearing how he deals with it and some of the cool stuff that he's been able to do, speaking at different things. And kind of how he stays level-headed with all that stuff was really cool." - The State

Lawrence's job entering the 2019 season is a little different than it was this time last year. There is no starting quarterback battle, and Lawrence is no longer looking up to his older teammates to be leaders. Instead, Swinney challenged Lawrence during the spring and into the summer to become one of the leaders on the team. The sophomore has done that. "The biggest thing I want to see I've already seen, and that's him asserting himself as a leader of the team. Because this time last year he wasn't in that situation," Swinney said. "He was in line trying to go prove something, had never taken a college snap. Well, now he's got a little bit of a resume. So use that in a positive way and really assert yourself as a leader of this football team, not just the offense. Be a leader."

Swinney also challenged Lawrence to get bigger and stronger, and the 6-foot-6 signal caller did that as well. Lawrence weighed in at 220 pounds on Thursday, five pounds heavier than he was in the spring. "I think just being able to take some more hits. I think that's the biggest thing, just gaining some weight, being able to take some more hits. And maybe be able to run a little bit more if I need to," Lawrence said. - The State

  08/04/19 - Diondre OvertonSr/2020, Clemson, 6-4, 212 (DS#76 WR) + More +

Tee Higgins and Justyn Ross have locked up starting spots at receiver and are expected to be two of the best in the country in 2019. The slot position was up for grabs at the conclusion of spring practice and into the summer, but it appears that senior Diondre Overton has created some separation there.

Overton worked with the starting offense during the hurry-up portion of Friday's practice that was open to the media, and after the workout, receivers coach Jeff Scott said that Overton had a great day and is in line to start at slot as things stand today. In addition to Overton, T.J. Chase and Cornell Powell are also battling for a starting job in the slot. - The State

Lawrence is not the only Tiger listed as one of the top prospects to give Clemson its first Heisman Trophy winner in school history, as running back Travis Etienne is listed with the seventh-best odds. Even though it may be easy to let the talk get to them, Lawrence sees the talk as just what it is - talk. "At this point in college football, there is so much talk that it is hard to ignore," Lawrence said. "People say crazy stuff and then it all takes care of it in the end. People before the national championship game were saying all kinds of stuff, like we shouldn't be there and we didn't have a chance. All that stuff, so it will all play out. And also, we're not on social media, so that helps limiting those distractions."

While the nation is getting its fill of Trevor-mania, Lawrence is focused on going out and trying to win his job all over again. "You still got to prove it every day," Lawrence said. "Just because I ended up being the starter last year doesn't mean I have that right every day and every week. But just also being that guy there for my teammates, being that same guy, not taking practices off." - The Times and Democrat

Clemson is No. 1 in the USA Today preseason coaches' poll for the first time, followed by Alabama at No. 2. The defending champion Tigers received 59 of a possible 65 first-place votes and the Crimson Tide got the rest in the poll released Thursday. The Associated Press preseason Top 25 will be released Aug. 19.

Clemson beat Alabama 44-16 in the College Football Playoff championship game in January. It was the fourth straight year the Tigers and Tide met in the playoff and third time they played for the national championship. Clemson and Alabama have alternated winning the last four championships. Georgia was No. 3 in the coaches' poll, followed by Oklahoma and Ohio State. No. 6 LSU and No. 8 Florida gave the Southeastern Conference four top-10 teams. - AP College Football

  08/01/19 - *Jackson CarmanJr/2021, Clemson, 6-5, 317 (DS#15 OT) + More +

Clemson had four of its five offensive linemen named preseason All-ACC. The only one who wasn't - Jackson Carman. The 6-foot-5, 355 pound former five-star recruit is physically intimidating and appears ready to move into former Clemson All-American Mitch Hyatt's spot at left tackle, but Carman needs to get in better shape during fall camp and improve his mobility to ensure that he earns the starting spot.

Tigers offensive line coach Robbie Caldwell said in mid July that Carman is being pushed by former Dorman offensive lineman Jordan McFadden. The redshirt freshman had an impressive year in practice in 2018 and had a strong spring and summer. Whether he earns a starting spot or not, McFadden is likely to receive plenty of playing time this season. - The State
