Remember when Travis Etienne's hands were a weakness? Early on in his career, Etienne struggled with drops, but he has gotten better and better at catching the ball each season. The senior hauled in five passes for 114 yards and a touchdown against Virginia, finishing with more receiving yards than rushing yards (73). Clemson entered the matchup with the game plan of getting Etienne the ball in space as often as possible, and the Louisiana native made the most of his opportunities, averaging 9.8 yards per touch. - The State

  10/03/20 - *Trevor LawrenceJr/2021, Clemson, 6-6, 213 (DS#1 QB) + More +

Trevor Lawrence was happy with Clemson's win over Virginia. He was also glad the top-ranked Tigers were challenged a bit this early in the season. Lawrence threw for 329 yards and three touchdowns as Clemson opened 3-0 for the sixth straight year with a 41-23 victory over the Cavaliers on Saturday night. The Tigers (3-0, 2-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) were not crisp at times against Virginia (1-1, 1-1). However, like so often the past few years when pressed, Clemson and Lawrence found what it took to succeed. "I guess we're in a pretty good position when we're kind of disappointed in an 18-point" win, Lawrencre said.

"I'm really glad we got challenged in some new ways. Part of being a great team is making adjustments and getting better." A big part is having talented players like Lawrence, tailback Travis Etienne and receiver Amari Rodgers. Etienne ran for 115 yards and a score. He also caught a 4-yard scoring pass. Rodgers had two TD catches in the final six minutes of the opening half to give Clemson a 24-3 lead that Virginia could not overcome. "They jump out on teams so quickly, they put you on your heels and never let you recover," Cavaliers coach Bronco Mendenhall said. Virginia tried, though, cutting it to 27-17 midway through the third period. That's when Lawrence found Etienne for a final scoring throw to restore Clemson's momentum. - Clemson/AP College Football

  10/02/20 - *Trevor LawrenceJr/2021, Clemson, 6-6, 213 (DS#1 QB) + More +

Trevor Lawrence appears destined to be the No. 1 overall pick in next year's NFL draft, and he is already being described as one of the top pro quarterback prospects of all time. Lawrence has been the talk of social media on more than a few occasions over the past couple of weeks, but not just for his play on the field. He is also regularly trending on social media on Sundays as fan bases post about how he could help their team and how they should "tank for Trevor" to get the No. 1 overall pick. "Obviously if you're on social media at all you can't help but see some of it," Lawrence said with a smile. "But it's just funny. It's a new team every week, so I don't think there's any real insight of what's going to happen. It's a long season."

Lawrence, who announced prior to Clemson's opener that this would be his final season of college football, is trying not to pay too much attention to it either. But he can't help but chuckle when he logs onto Twitter and sees that NFL fan bases are tagging him in tweets, begging and pleading for him to end up with their team. "It's just kind of funny, but I don't take it too seriously," Lawrence said. "I know in this position you can't really predict where you're gonna go, what's going to happen. All I can do is enjoy my time while I'm here, perform the best I can, and enjoy where I'm at right now. We'll see next year what happens." - The State

The star quarterback and Heisman favorite completed 8 of 9 passes for 168 yards and three touchdowns against The Citadel. He also rushed for a touchdown. Lawrence's only incomplete pass was a drop by Amari Rodgers, and through two games he has thrown one inaccurate pass all year. Other incompletions were due to a receiver slipping, drops, etc. For the season Lawrence is 30 of 37 passing for 519 yards, with four touchdowns and no interceptions. He also has three rushing scores. "He's really playing exactly the way he's practicing. What you're seeing on game day is exactly what we see in practice, just incredible focus," Swinney said. "Complete ownership of what we're doing. Great poise, discipline. Great feel for the defensive structures and protections and just really throwing the ball with a lot of confidence. He's special. He's a joy to watch." - The State

  09/23/20 - Travis EtienneSr/2021, Clemson, 5-10, 215 (DS#2 RB) + More +

The Tigers' star running back was given one opportunity to return a punt against The Citadel and he made the most of it, going 44 yards to set up a Clemson touchdown. Etienne is as dangerous as anyone in college football with the ball in his hands, and he showed why during his punt return, juking and dodging would-be tacklers. Etienne could be a nightmare for opposing special teams coaches to defend against, and he could also help his draft stock by showing off his versatility. It's "something he's been working on really all fall camp and kind of earning my trust a little bit. I wanted to get him a live rep. It's just another opportunity for him to touch it," Clemson coach Dabo Swinney said. "He did a great job. That's a good option for us moving forward to know he can not only be a kick returner guy but a punt return guy as well if we need him. That puts a lot of pressure on people." - The State

  09/23/20 - Ruke OrhorhororSr/2024, Clemson, 6-4, 294 (DS#6 DT) + More +

Clemson defensive tackle Ruke Orhorhoro will be out for the next few months after being injured in the season opener against Wake Forest. Swinney said Orhorhoro suffered a meniscus injury against the Demon Deacons and will not be back until December. The sophomore was listed as the backup to Tyler Davis entering the season. He was credited with a quarterback pressure against Wake Forest. "Once they got in there they had to repair it, so he's going to be out a little longer than we hoped," Swinney said of Orhorhoro. "We think he'll be back in December....We play Virginia Tech, and if we're fortunate enough to get to the (ACC) championship game we hope to have him back and ready by then and any postseason type play." Orhorhoro played in 10 games last season, recording five tackles, including 1.5 for loss. He signed with Clemson as a three-star prospect for the class of 2019. - The State

Trevor Lawrence threw nine passes Saturday. Three of them went for touchdowns. It was that kind of day for No. 1 Clemson. Lawrence and star running back Travis Etienne got plenty of rest as the top-ranked Tigers rolled to a 49-0 victory over The Citadel. Lawrence was 8 for 9 for 168 yards, including first-half scoring passes of 54 and 17 yards to Frank Ladson Jr. and 44 yards to Amari Rodgers. "Might have been my most efficient day since I've been here," he said. "That was just fun." Lawrence also rushed for his third TD already this season, leading the way as the Tigers (2-0) improved to 35-0 against teams from the Football Championship Subdivision.

Clemson came out fast, stayed sharp and played just about everybody available in the runaway victory. "Good to see that maturity and leadership, no matter who we play," coach Dabo Swinney said. Lawrence missed his first throw - Rodgers dropped a ball that hit his hands - before hitting his last eight. The Heisman Trophy favorite was largely done when Clemson went up 28-0 in the first quarter. He returned for one second-quarter series and quickly added points with a perfectly thrown pass down the left side to Ladson. "It was good for us to take care of business early and build depth," Lawrence said. - Clemson/AP College Football

  09/16/20 - *Myles MurphyJr/2023, Clemson, 6-5, 268 (DS#4 DE) + More +

For the past four years, Joe Gerda watched Myles Murphy dominate on the high school level. Gerda was Murphy's defensive line coach at Hillgrove High School in Georgia and watched the soft-spoken defensive end become the school's latest superstar. Hillgrove produced current NFL players Bradley Chubb (Cleveland Browns), Evan Engram (New York Giants) and Kenyan Drake (Arizona Cardinals). But Gerda wasn't sure what to expect when he turned on the TV Saturday to watch Murphy in his Clemson debut against Wake Forest. The 6-foot-5, 275-pound Murphy was that same dominant player Gerda watched so many times, leading the Tigers with seven tackles (three for loss) and two sacks in the 37-13 victory. "I was very surprised to see the stat line," Gerda said. "His ability to get rid of blocks so quickly at the college level was a surprise to me. He was always able to do that at the high school level. He was a man among boys. But to do it against Wake Forest and grown men is pretty impressive." Murphy, who talked with reporters this week for the first time since arriving at Clemson in January, admitted he had first-game jitters, but they went away after the first few plays. He played 29 snaps, fourth most along the Tigers' defensive line Saturday. "The first drive I was nervous. After you make first contact on the field, it gets out of your body," Murphy said. "The rest of the game felt like high school ball and doing what I do on the field." - The State

  09/16/20 - Tyler DavisrSr/2024, Clemson, 6-2, 301 (DS#16 DT) + More +

Dabo Swinney provided an update on several Clemson defenders who either missed Saturday's game against Wake Forest or were injured during it during his weekly press conference on Tuesday. Defensive tackles Tyler Davis and Ruke Orhorhoro were banged up in Clemson's 37-13 victory and received MRIs over the weekend. Davis, an all-ACC selection, suffered a sprained MCL against Wake Forest and Tigers coach Dabo Swinney is hopeful Clemson will "get him back here sooner than later." Davis will miss Saturday's game against The Citadel but Swinney said he could be back by early October. He added that Davis has a similar injury to the one that kept running back Lyn-J Dixon out this past weekend against Wake Forest. "He's just got a little sprain on his MCL. Very similar to Lyn-J. Hopefully not as bad as Lyn-J's," Swinney said. "It sets up good for him. Obviously he's out this week, but we've got an open date coming up. We'll hope for Virginia and see what happens." - The State

  09/15/20 - Braden GallowaySr/2022, Clemson, 6-4, 239 (DS#19 TE) + More +

While Clemson's receivers didn't have their best night, the tight ends came to play. Braden Galloway had five catches for 60 yards, Davis Allen caught one pass for 42 yards and J.C. Chalk caught a 12-yard touchdown, the first of his career. The lack of a pass-catcher at tight end has been noticeable in Clemson's offense the past couple of years. Before Saturday, the Tigers had not had a tight end catch a touchdown since 2018. With linebackers forced to focus on Travis Etienne and Clemson's running game, Tigers tight ends should have plenty of opportunities throughout the season. - The State
