Trevor Lawrence won't be playing against Notre Dame, but he will be on the sideline. Clemson's star quarterback will travel with the team to South Bend for Saturday's Top 5 showdown. Lawrence will have completed the required 10-day isolation period in time to travel with the Tigers, but he will not have passed the cardiac requirements. "He's doing great. He really is," Clemson coach Dabo Swinney said Tuesday. "He's in the meetings. He's Zooming in and all that stuff. So he's doing well. He's just anxious to get out. He's back with us Thursday or Friday, so he'll be with us. He'll travel with us. He just can't play because of the cardiac back-to-play protocol that's in place."

Atlantic Coast Conference rules require players to isolate for at least 10 days from the start of symptoms or a positive test. They must then undergo a cardiac evaluation before beginning a phased return and a re-acclimatization period. There is no set minimum period for the phased return from the ACC. For Clemson athletes, it's typically a minimum of two to three days for the phased return. Having Lawrence at the game will provide another voice of reassurance and another set of eyes to help Tigers freshman quarterback D.J. Uiagalelei. - The State

Etienne was awarded the O'Rourke-McFadden Trophy, given annually to the best player in the Clemson-Boston College game. The senior set a pair of records Saturday, becoming the ACC's career leading rusher (4,644 yards) and scoring a touchdown in his FBS-best 42nd career game. With Lawrence out, offensive coordinator Tony Elliott challenged Etienne to be more of a leader Saturday; Elliott said Uiagalelei needed to feel a confident presence next to him in the back field. Etienne hadn't carried the ball more than 17 times in a season before Saturday, but against the Eagles he had 20 carries and seven catches for 140 yards. Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence has tested positive for COVID-19, putting into doubt whether the face of college football will be available to play the top-ranked Tigers' biggest game of the season. Clemson coach Dabo Swinney said in a statement released by the school Thursday night that Lawrence is in isolation with mild symptoms. Swinney said Lawrence would miss Clemson's game Saturday against Boston College. The Tigers are scheduled to play No. 4 Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana, on Nov. 7. Individuals who test positive for COVID-19 must isolate for a minimum of 10 days. The junior from Georgia is a leading contender for the Heisman Trophy and potentially the top overall pick in next year's NFL draft. He led the Tigers (6-0) to a national championship as a freshman and back to the College Football playoff championship game last season. The plan all along has been for Trevor Lawrence to play three years at Clemson before leaving for the NFL, but is it a guarantee that this will be his final year with the Tigers? There has been speculation in recent weeks that Lawrence should not play for the Jets if New York ends up with the No. 1 overall pick for the 2021 NFL Draft. A story from Sports Illustrated suggested that Lawrence should "pull an Eli Manning" and "steer himself away from the Jets." Manning told the Chargers in 2004 that he did not want to play for them, leading to a blockbuster trade that ended with Philip Rivers in San Diego and Manning with the New York Giants.

Former Falcons star Roddy White, speaking in a recent interview, went as far as to say that Lawrence should "just go back to Clemson" if the Jets have the top pick. "If the Jets get the first pick don't go. Just stay. Just stay one more year in college and enjoy your time...because it would be awful to get drafted by the Jets," White said. Lawrence, a junior, was asked Tuesday if there was anything that might make him reconsider returning to school. He didn't close the door on playing one more season at Clemson. "I don't know. I mean, we'll just have to see how things unfold. I think there's a lot of factors in that," Lawrence told reporters. "Honestly (I'm) just playing this year, putting everything I have into it. Clemson coach Dabo Swinney said one of the defense's leading players in linebacker James Skalski will miss several games with a knee injury. Swinney said Tuesday that Skalski will have arthroscopic surgery on his knee. The coach is unsure how long Skalski would be out. Skalski missed last week's 47-21 victory over Syracuse. Swinney said Skalski had an MRI that revealed the injury. The fifth-year senior from Sharpsburg, Georgia was Clemson's second leading tackler with 105 stops in 2019, his first as a starter. He was second this season, too, before sitting out against the Orange. Trevor Lawrence threw two touchdown passes and Travis Etienne ran for three scores as No. 1 Clemson shook off a sluggish performance to win their 27th straight Atlantic Coast Conference game and put away pesky Syracuse 47-21 on Saturday. The Tigers opened 6-0 for the sixth straight season, but it took a late burst to get it done - just like usual against Syracuse (1-5, 1-4). The Orange were the last ACC team to defeat the Tigers (5-0 ACC) with a 27-24 victory in 2017. A year later at Death Valley, Syracuse again looked primed for the upset as it held a 10-point lead in the fourth quarter before Clemson's 27-23 escape to keep its national championship season intact.

Despite entering as 45-point underdogs, coach Dino Babers and Syracuse kept the Tigers out of synch much of the game and were down just 27-21 late in the third quarter. But Andrew Booth Jr.'s fumble recovery and touchdown run after Rex Culpepper was sacked late in the third quarter turned the game in Clemson's favor for good. Etienne added rushing TDs of 9 and 1 yard. Lawrence threw for 289 yards with scoring passes of 25 yards to Cornell Powell and 18 yards to Davis Allen. The Tigers broke fast for a 17-0 lead less than 11 minutes into the game. That's when things got away from the five-time defending ACC champion. - Clemson/AP College Football

Grisham, from 2005-08, was the first great slot receiver to play at Clemson under coach Dabo Swinney, starting a trend that included Adam Humphries and Hunter Renfrow, who are both in the NFL. Rodgers is the next line. But the 5-10, 210-pound-senior can do more things than traditional slot guys, Elliott said. "They're typically more of your short area, quick, catch the ball and run," Elliott said. "He can actually go and stretch the field, because he has the speed, but then has the ability to go up and high point the ball." Normally, Clemson turns to taller receivers in deep-ball situations; Tee Higgins and Justyn Ross, both of whom are 6-4, filled that role the past two seasons. Though with Higgins in the NFL and Ross working his way back from surgery for a congenital spine fusion, the onus has fallen on Rodgers, whose 83-yard score marked the team's longest reception of the season so far. The Heisman favorite passed for 404 yards and five touchdowns while playing only the first half and then one series in the second. He was 14 of 15 passing for 233 yards, with three touchdowns and no interceptions in the second quarter alone. The Tigers outscored Georgia Tech 35-0 during the period. Lawrence did throw his first interception in 364 calendar days and in 366 pass attempts, but other than the one mistake, which came when he was pressured and threw the ball up for grabs, Lawrence was just about perfect.
