Central Michigan quarterback John Keller has been released from the hospital nearly a month after he was shot in the chest near campus. Keller and another student, Tyler Bunting, were shot at a party on April 24 after a fight broke out at Deerfield Village apartment complex in Mount Pleasant, Michigan. Keller had been on a ventilator and in the intensive care unit after the shooting but had the ventilator removed on May 1. Keller's father, Ray, tweeted on Friday that his son is being released and that the trauma team at Hurley Medical Center saved his son's life. - Central Michigan Life

A college football quarterback who was shot and wounded last weekend "is showing all of the right signs of his body healing," the organizer of a GoFundMe page said Wednesday, praising him as a hero. Central Michigan's John Keller was the victim in a shooting at an off-campus party on Saturday. Lauren Rhodes, who organized the fundraiser, said Keller prevented the gunman from entering the building and potentially causing more casualties. "The Keller family and I would like to thank each and every one of you for your support during this difficult time. John still remains in critical condition, but he is stable. He is showing all of the right signs of his body healing. John continues to fight for his life and prayers are needed now more than ever," Rhodes wrote in an update on Keller's GoFundMe page.

"For those of you who do not know, the individual who shot John on April 24th, was taken into custody yesterday. When the assailant showed up at Deerfield Village Apartments early Saturday morning, John took heroic actions to prevent him from entering into the building to shoot other individuals. John is a hero and he deserves our support and prayers." Kenneth Thomas, of Detroit, was arrested in the shooting and pleaded not guilty to 10 charges in Isabella County Court, according to WXMI, the Fox-affiliated station in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Thomas was allegedly with a group of people who were going to the bars near Mount Pleasant. - Central Michigan Life

A search continues for the suspects in early-morning shootings Saturday that left two Central Michigan University students injured, one of them a backup quarterback on the Chippewa football team. Investigators are poring over tips, witness accounts, social media posts and a few videos from the scene of the shootings, which occurred just before 1 a.m. Saturday at Deerfield Village Apartments in Union Township, said Isabella County Sheriff Mike Main. Family members have identified the most seriously injured victim as John Keller, a transfer quarterback from Ohio on the CMU football team. Keller, 20, was shot once in the chest and initially listed in critical condition after being flown by medical helicopter to Hurley Medical Center in Flint. - Morning Sun

Reid went from secondary contributor to first team All-MAC as a sophomore, picking off passes in each of CMU's last three games. He played a much higher percentage of snaps in his second year of action, averaging 63.5 snaps per game. "Willie Reid had the opportunity to play a role as a starter for us and really developed," Akey said. Working with new secondary coach Mike Zordich will also help him. There's a bit of a log jam at the position, with senior Alonzo McCoy returning along with junior Devonni Reed. However, with Reid establishing himself as a turnover creator, it will be tough to keep him off the field if this trend continues. - Central Michigan Life

Along with announcing the start of spring football, McElwain added that CMU will be hosting its Pro Day the morning of March 23. The Chippewas are scheduled to practice that afternoon. Participants for Pro Day have not been announced. McElwain said that there will only be a few Chippewas participating as most of Pro Day-eligible players will be returning for a final season with an extra year of eligibility granted by the NCAA. "As for a list of players, (Director of Player Personnel) Albert (Karschnia) puts that together," McElwain said. "Some of the scouts have asked, like usual, that there might be one or two of the guys from the (Division II) schools around that they want to get a look at. "There's not a lot of numbers going through it." - Central Michigan Life
