NOV 8 MAC WEST DIVISION SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Kalil Pimpleton, Central Michigan, Punt Returner, Junior, Muskegon, Mich./Muskegon,...Pimpleton led Central Michigan to a rivalry victory at Western Michigan with a pair of punt returns for touchdowns in just a five minute span on the game clock. Pimpleton's first punt return for a touchdown came at the 5:03 mark of the second quarter, a 70-yard score. It was CMU's first punt return for a TD since Antonio Brown in 2009. KP's second punt return for a score came with 00:03 left in the first half, a 97-yard return. That broke CMU's program record previously held by Jim Podoley, a 90-yard return vs. Northern Iowa, 1953. It was also the third-longest return in MAC history. Pimpleton is the first CMU player to have two punt returns for a touchdown in the program's Division I era. He is the only player at the FBS level this season to tally two in a game and is the 24th player in D-I to have multiple punt return touchdowns in a single game since 2000. Pimpleton broke the MAC single game punt return average record with a mark of 55.3. The previous mark was 43.3 by Ryne Robinson of Miami (Ohio) in 2003. - MAC Football

Kalil Pimpleton scored three touchdowns in five minutes, two on long punt returns, to spark Central Michigan to a 42-30 win over Western Michigan on Wednesday night. Pimpleton, who had 104 yards receiving with an 11-yard touchdown sandwiched between the punt returns, had 269 yards of total offense at halftime. He finished with 281. Lew Nichols had two second-half touchdown runs and piled up 163 yards on 26 carries for the Chippewas (5-4, 3-2 Mid-American Conference). It was his fourth straight 100-yard game and fifth of the season for the redshirt freshman.

With the Chippewas trailing 14-0 in the second quarter, Pimpleton took a punt and went around the right side 70 yards for a score. He then hauled in an 11-yard scoring pass to complete a three-play, 72-yard drive. Finally he fielded a punt at the 5-yard line, went up the middle, veered to the right sideline and then back to the middle of the field for a 95-yard score, the longest in school history. The first TD came at the 5:03 mark, the third came three seconds before halftime. The last Chippewa to return a punt for a touchdown was Antonio Brown in 2009 when he was the last to have two punt returns in a season. Sean Tyler had two rushing touchdowns for the Broncos (5-4, 2-3) and Corey Crooms caught seven passes for 118 yards and a score. - Central Michigan/AP College Football

The 2021 season unofficially kicked off on Tuesday with the Mid-American Conference Media Day at Ford Field, which in December will be the site of the league title game. The Chippewas went 3-3 in the COVID-shortened 2020 season, and they return a talented and solid core of veterans in the likes of defensive end Troy Hairston II and wide receiver/punt returner Kalil Pimpleton, both of whom represented CMU at Tuesday's media day. CMU won the MAC West in 2019, McElwain's first season at the helm of the program. "I think we've got great pieces on our team; I think our parts are fantastic," McElwain said. "I think we have some really, really talented guys. Now we've got to bring those parts and make it a whole."

Hairston, who was the co-MAC Defensive Player of the Year last season, is the headliner of a defense that includes mainstays Troy Brown - a two-time All-MAC First Team linebacker - safety Devonni Reed, and middle linebacker George Douglas. Pimpleton is among the most dazzling players in the MAC and is a threat to go the distance any time he touches the ball. He is part of an offense that includes the one-two running back punch of Kobe Lewis and Lew Nichols III, the latter of whom was named the MAC Freshman of the Year in 2020. The Chippewas were picked fourth in the preseason media poll. - Morning Sun

Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reported the football team was the first to make its way back to campus, the other teams are expected to return at a later date. A team spokesman said players were only able to return if their remote coronavirus tests were negative. At this point, the department has not confirmed if any players tested positive. Student-athletes who have returned to campus have already returned negative tests and would only test further if anybody exhibits signs of COVID-19. Players, coaches and staff members have been given a symptom checklist to fill out each day, and it remains the person's discretion if they are healthy enough to enter the facility. "The health and safety of our students is always our top priority," CMU Athletic Director Michael Alford said in a statement. "We have been in constant communication and planning with campus partners and health officials in preparation for a return to campus. We will also follow all state guidelines put in place and all activities will be voluntary as defined by the NCAA." - Central Michigan Life
