Memphis senior defensive tackle Maurice White has entered the transfer portal, a source confirmed to The Commercial Appeal. White, who's in his fifth season, is no longer listed on the Tigers' roster. The source requested anonymity because an announcement has yet to be made public. White, who played 11 games last season, was on the roster when preseason practice started Wednesday. He was third on the team last season with 3 1/2 sacks among his 12 tackles. White was expected to add depth at defensive line with starter Morris Joseph transferring three weeks before spring practice. However, sophomore linemen Cam'Ron Jackson and Zy Brockington started the spring game and remain among the leaders for that position battle with practice underway. White arrived in 2020 as a transfer from East Mississippi Community College and played 11 games that season. - Memphis Commercial Appeal

2022 PRESEASON DOAK WALKER AWARD CANDIDATE: Lew Nichols, III (So.), Central Michigan,...Making this watch list is significant because despite leading the nation in rushing, running back Lew Nichols (5-10. 220) was not selected as a semifinalist for the Doak Walker Award last season. Going back to his 2019 season, Nichols appeared in four games for Central Michigan, carrying 19 times for 89 yards. As a redshirt freshman during the COVID 19-shortened 2020 season, Nichols rushed for 196 yards and two fourth-quarter touchdowns in a 31-23 victory over rival Eastern Michigan. For the season, he rushed for 508 yards on 78 carries, an average of 6.5 yards per carry. He won the MAC freshman of the year award. Due to special eligibility rules enacted for the 2020 season, Nichols repeated as a redshirt freshman in 2021. He led all players in NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) with 1,710 rushing yards. - Nichols' Wikipedia page

Luke Goedeke had designs on being an NFL tight end when he reported for his first day of football practice at Central Michigan in 2018, even if his coaches secretly saw his future at a different position. A transfer from Division III Wisconsin-Stevens Point, Goedeke showed up to the equipment room and was told the only cleats available in his size were for an offensive lineman. Undeterred, Goedeke spent the next week and a half slipping and sliding across the practice field before he approached his position coach, Tavita Thompson, and asked what he could do to crack the playing rotation.

Thompson, a former Oregon State offensive tackle, suggested Goedeke switch to offensive line. "They told me this past year, which I had a feeling that was the plan all along, to just transition me to the offensive line," Goedeke said. "But it worked out in the end, so no complaints." Once a self-described "negative two-star" recruit, Goedeke now projects as a mid-round pick and one of the best feel-good stories in April's NFL draft. - Central Michigan Life
