  Breylin Smith threw for a career-best 434 yards and four touchdowns as Central Arkansas walked over Lamar 45-17 in Southland Conference action on Saturday. Smith set a career high last week, throwing for 405 yards and four scores as the Bears rallied to beat Sam Houston State 29-25, for their sixth come-from-behind win this season. Smith was 30-for-37 passing with no interceptions as Central Arkansas scored on its second, third and fourth possession of the game to go ahead 21-0 in the first quarter.

</p>Smith had 325 yards passing with three scores in the first two quarters. The Bears went into the break leading 31-10 and were ahead 45-10 at the end of the third after Smith plunged in from the 1 and Tyler Hudson gathered in a 16-yard scoring strike from Smith. Central Arkansas (7-2, 5-1) remains atop the conference standings with Sam Houston State and Incarnate Word tied for second. The Bears only league loss was to Nichols 34-14 on October 5.   Will McElvain threw three touchdown passes, the Northern Iowa defense came up with three interceptions and the Panthers defeated Illinois State 27-10 on Saturday in a Missouri Valley Conference matchup of Top 10 teams. McElvain's 16-yard strike to Suni Lane in the final minute of the first half put the Panthers (6-3, 4-1) on top 14-7. The duo hooked up for a 27-yard score with 11 minutes to play for a 21-10 lead. Matthew Cook finished the next two drives, setup by Xavior Williams' fumble recovery and a Christian Jegen interception, both deep in ISU territory, with field goals. McElvain was 14 of 28 for 189 yards with an interception. Illinois State (6-3, 3-2) had only 63 yards of offense in the second half, only scoring on a field goal that was set up by a fumble recovery at the Northern Iowa 30.   OCT 28 SOUTHLAND OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Breylin Smith, Central Arkansas, R-So., Quarterback, Conway, Ark.,...Smith wasn't fazed by going up against one of the nation's top defenses, throwing for a career-high 405 yards and tying a career high with four touchdown passes. After a slow start in the first half, he went 10-for-18 for 253 yards and all four scores in the second half to lead the Bears to another comeback victory. The signal caller connected with Joe Hampton on touchdown strikes of 40 and 53 yards in the third quarter to make it a one-score game at 22-14. His third touchdown pass went for 28 yards to Carlos Blackman to knot it at 22-all, and the final score - a 15-yarder to Tyler Hudson - gave the Bears the lead with just under four minutes to go.   OCT 28/WEEK 9 SUN BELT DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Nathan Page, Arkansas State (Sophomore, Cornerback, Roland, Ark.),...Arkansas State sophomore cornerback, Nathan Page, posted a career-high two interceptions, a pass break-up and two tackles to help Arkansas State claim a 38-14 win over Texas State. The Roland, Ark., native not only posted the first two interceptions of his career; his two picks tied the most by a Sun Belt player this season. Each of Page's interceptions came in the second half, helping the Red Wolves outscore the Bobcats, 21-0. He was part of A-State's defense that allowed just 227 yards total offense and eight first downs on the night.   Breylin Smith threw for 405 yards and four touchdowns, including a 15-yarder to Tyler Hudson with 3:57 remaining, and Central Arkansas held off Sam Houston State 29-25 on Saturday night. Hudson finished with 10 catches for 140 yards and a score. Joe Hampton added 149 yards on five catches, two going for scores, as Central Arkansas (6-2. 4-1 Southland) scored 22 of the final 25 points. Donovan Williams led Sam Houston State (5-4, 4-2) with 33 carries for 161 yards and two touchdowns.

Sam Houston State closed the first half with a nine-play, 99-yard drive, capped by Brennon Tibbs' 10-yard TD reception for a 16-0 lead. Williams added a 10-yard rushing TD and Jevon Leon sacked Smith in the end zone. Central Arkansas opened the second half with a 75-yard drive, capped by Hampton's 40-yard touchdown grab to snap the SHSU defense's streak of 13 straight scoreless quarters in regulation.   Will McElvain threw for two touchdowns and ran for another as Northern Iowa scored 29-unanswered points on its way to a 29-6 win over Missouri State on Saturday. McElvain had 238 yards passing for the Panthers (5-3, 3-1 Missouri Valley Football Conference). Isaiah Weston had 157 yards and two touchdowns receiving. Matthew Cook kicked three field goals. Cook booted a pair of field goals in the second quarter, from 49 and 22 yards, to give Northern Iowa a 6-0 lead. Later, Austin Evans recovered a Missouri State (1-6, 1-3) fumble six yards shy of the Bears end zone, leading to McElvain's touchdown run two plays later. McElvain followed that with a 46-yard scoring throw to Weston for a 19-0 lead at halftime. Cook's 38-yard field goal and McElvain's 70-yard touchdown pass to Weston late in the third quarter stretched it to 29-0 before the Bears finally scored on a 17-yard touchdown throw from Peyton Huslig to Antwan Woods.   Breylin Smith threw for three touchdowns, Lujuan Winningham caught nine passes for 168 yards, and Central Arkansas stopped a two-point conversion to defeat Northwestern State 31-30 on Saturday night. After the Bears (5-2, 3-1 Southland Conference) took the lead for the first time on a 25-yard pass from Smith to Winningham early in the fourth quarter, their offense struggled, going without a first down on their next three possessions.

Meanwhile, the Demons (0-7, 0-4) threatened three times. They reached the Central Arkansas 17 in a drive that ended on a missed 34-yard field goal attempt by Ryan Gremillion. After recovering a fumble, they drove to the Central Arkansas 33 but Shelton Eppler was sacked on fourth down. Finally, on the third drive, Eppler hit Akile Davis for 9 yards and a touchdown. Trailing 31-30 with 1:30 remaining, Eppler's two-point pass failed. Eppler completed 26 of 49 for 310 yards with three touchdowns and two interceptions. Smith completed 30 of 43 passes for 299 yards.   Will McElvain threw three touchdown passes to Isaiah Weston, Tyler Hoosman scored two touchdowns, and Northern Iowa defeated South Dakota 42-27 on Saturday. Austin Evans returned an interception 16 yards for the Panthers' other touchdown. Northern Iowa, No. 15 in the FCS Coaches Poll, had 417 yards total offense but only 11 first downs. The Panthers were 5 of 13 converting on third down. South Dakota did not reach the end zone after a first quarter in which Kai Henry ran for a touchdown and Austin Simmons threw two touchdown passes for a 21-14 lead.

After Northern Iowa (4-3, 2-1 Missouri Valley) trailed 24-21 at halftime, McElvain and Weston connected on scoring passes of 65 and 54 yards in the third quarter. Hoosman's 1-yard run early in the fourth quarter closed out the scoring. Weston had four catches for 189 yards. Hoosman carried 24 times for 111 yards.   Breylin Smith threw for 369 yards and three touchdowns and Central Arkansas beat McNeese 40-31 on Saturday. McNeese led 24-20 when Cody Orgeron threw a 32-yard touchdown to Trevor Begue with 25 seconds before halftime. In the third quarter, Smith threw a 78-yard TD to Tyler Hudson to put the Bears up 27-24. After forcing the Cowboys to turn it over on downs, backup Luke Hales entered and threw a 19-yard touchdown for a 10-point lead.

On McNeese's next possession, Orgeron led a 14-play, 75-yard drive that ended when he threw a 4-yard TD pass to Louis Conerly to bring the Cowboys within 34-31. Hayden Ray kicked field goals of 25 and 39 yards for a 40-31 Central Arkansas (4-2, 2-1 Southland Conference) lead.   Redshirt freshman Will McElvain threw a 39-yard touchdown pass to Isaiah Weston, and Trevor Allen and Tyler Hoosman ran for scores, as Northern Iowa held off Youngstown State 21-14 in a Missouri Valley Football Conference opener between two ranked teams on Saturday. McElvain staked the Panthers (3-2), ranked 13th in the FCS Coaches poll, to a 7-0 lead in the first quarter when he capped an eight-play, 80-yard drive with his TD toss to Weston. McElvain directed an eight-play, 79-yard drive - ended by Allen's 10-yard TD run - to push Northern Iowa's lead to 14-0 with 5:07 left in the second quarter. On the ensuing possession for the 17th-ranked Penguins (4-1), Nathan Mays needed just one play - a 75-yard scoring strike to Jermiah Braswell - to halve the lead at 14-7. But the Panthers took the kickoff and marched 75 yards, with Hoosman running it in from the 15-yard line for a 21-7 halftime lead.

The only scoring in the second half came on Youngstown State's opening drive of the third quarter. Mays completed all four of his passes in an eight-play, 75-yard drive, accounting for 56 yards with the last 14 coming on a scoring toss to Kendric Mallory that pulled the Penguins within 21-14. McElvain finished 10-of-20 passing for 235 yards and a TD for the winners. Allen had a game-high 74 yards rushing on 16 carries. Weston had three receptions for 108 yards.
