  For the second-straight season, a Nicholls student-athlete headlines the Southland Football All-Conference Teams as defensive lineman Sully Laiche is the conference's Player of the Year, the league announced Tuesday. Yearly awards are presented by Ready Nutrition. Laiche is one of seven superlative award winners announced Tuesday, along with Offensive Player of the Year Chase Fourcade (Nicholls) and Defensive Player of the Year Chris Livings (McNeese). Sam Houston State's Trace Mascorro is the Newcomer of the Year, and Central Arkansas' Tyler Hudson is the Freshman of the Year. The Offensive Lineman of the Year Award goes to Nicholls' PJ Burkhalter, and Southeastern Louisiana's Frank Scelfo is the Coach of the Year.

Central Arkansas leads the way with 13 total all-conference selections, followed by Nicholls and Sam Houston State each with 12. Southeastern Louisiana placed 11 on the all-league teams while McNeese had nine honorees. Abilene Christian, Houston Baptist and Lamar garnered five picks each, and UIW, Northwestern State and Stephen F. Austin rounded out the teams with four selections apiece. In total, 17 honorees are returning all-Southland selections, led by Laiche and teammate Allen Pittman with their fourth picks.   The University of Central Arkansas Bears earned an FCS national seed and the Thanksgiving weekend off when the NCAA FCS Championship Bracket was announced on Sunday morning on ESPNU. The 9th-ranked Bears (9-3, 7-2) earned the No. 8 seed, meaning a first-round bye this Saturday and a second-round home game on Dec. 7 on "The Stripes" at First Security Field at Estes Stadium. UCA will host the winner of Southeast Missouri and Illinois State, which meet this Saturday in Cape Girardeau, Mo.

The Bears, co-champions of the Southland Conference along with the Nicholls Colonels, will be making their fifth appearance in the FCS Playoffs, and third in the past four years. The game will be the third home playoff game for the Bears since 2016. UCA, which earned its second national seed in the past three years, beat Illinois State at Estes Stadium in the first round of the 2016 playoffs before losing at Eastern Washington. In 2017, the Bears lost to New Hampshire in the second round in 2017 after receiving a first-round bye as a Top 8 seed. - Central Arkansas Football

  Will McElvain passed for two touchdowns, Trevor Allen ran for a pair and Northern Iowa defeated Western Illinois 38-7 in a regular-season finale on Sunday. McElvain, 10-of-18 passing for 154 yards, threw 61 yards to Logan Wolf and 36 to Jaylin James for touchdowns. Allen, who finished with 94 yards on 24 carries, had short touchdown runs to complete 15- and 16-play drives for the Panthers (8-4, 6-2 Missouri Valley Football Conference), who have won all six of their home games in the regular season. Chris Kolarevic added a 28-yard interception return for a score for Northern Iowa, which is ranked 10th in the FCS coaches poll and will learn its postseason fate on Sunday.   Breylin Smith passed for 296 yards, five touchdowns and no interceptions, and Central Arkansas earned a share of the Southland Conference title with a 52-35 win over Incarnate Word on Friday night. Central Arkansas (9-3, 7-2) shares the title with Nicholls, which beat SE Louisiana on Thursday night. Nicholls earned the automatic bid to the FCS playoffs due to beating Central Arkansas 34-14 on Oct. 5. The Bears, ranked 11th in the FCS Coaches Poll, are in line for an at-large berth. The Bears never trailed, but the Cardinals (5-7, 4-5) closed a 17-point deficit to 31-28 on Jon Copeland's 8-yard TD keeper with 3:52 left in the third quarter. Central Arkansas scored two touchdowns to extend the lead to 45-28 and the teams traded touchdowns in the final three minutes.   Breylin Smith threw a pair of touchdowns and Central Arkansas led for the duration in a 30-7 win over Stephen F. Austin on Saturday. With the win, the Bears (8-3, 6-2) held onto a share of first place in the Southland Conference standings. A four-way tie heading into Saturday is now down to three teams as Sam Houston State (6-5, 5-3) lost to Northwestern State, while Southeast Louisiana (7-3, 6-2) and Nicholls (7-4, 6-2) both won. Cam Arnold threw a 71-yard touchdown pass to Xavier Gipson with 2:43 before halftime and the Lumberjacks were within 13-7 at intermission. Hayden Ray's field in the third quarter made it 16-7. Later, the Bears cashed in on a blocked punt and recovered at the Lumberjacks' 4-yard line. Carlo Blackman ran it from there with 63 seconds left in the third for a 23-7 lead.   2019 WALTER PAYTON AWARD WATCHLIST ADDITION: QB Breylin Smith, Central Arkansas,... Smith, a redshirt sophomore for the sixth-ranked Bears, has thrown for 2,848 yards through nine games this season. He has completed 66.6 percent of his passes (235 of 353) with 24 touchdown passes and eight interceptions. Smith is averaging 316.4 passing yards per game, which ranks fifth nationally. He is fourth in total passing yards, seventh in passing touchdowns and ninth in completion percentage.

Smith, who played at Conway (Ark.) High School, has won consecutive Southland Conference Offensive Player of the Week awards, combining for 839 passing yards and eight touchdowns with one interception in the past two weeks. Jerry Nunez kicked a pair of field goals for the Sycamores in the first half and added a 28-yarder to cap the scoring with 8:21 remaining in the third quarter. Indiana State had its final possession with 5 minutes to play and drove to the Northern Iowa 38 with less than two minutes left.
